Level 1 Umpiring Courses – 2012/2013
Dear Friends
This is a great time to start Umpiring.
The development of umpires is a key priority within Gloucestershire, Wiltshire
and Somerset’s Development Plans and is also a key objective and
requirement for Leagues throughout the county. All Cricket Boards are very
committed to seeing an increase in the number of active qualified umpires
and this is why we have joined forces with all the local leagues, to implement
a plan that will see the number of league matches officiated by qualified
umpires increase steadily over time.
As a result, a recruitment initiative alongside the ECB advertising campaign
‘Stay in the game’ has been designed to encourage players and volunteers to
move into umpiring/scoring. This initiative is supported right from the top
down, through WEPL, the Bristol and District and the County Leagues and the
local District Leagues in Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.
GACO, SACO and WACO are providing ACO Level 1 courses over the coming
months, in preparation for the 2013 season. These courses will be delivered
by qualified ECB instructors and following successful completion of the course,
candidates will receive a formal ECB recognised qualification. This is the first
step on the pathway for any individual who wishes to officiate ECB Premier
League Cricket, multi-day cricket and First Class cricket.
It is important for all prospective Umpire and Scorer candidates in our area to
understand that the only training available, that will enable a route to the
very top of the Officials ladder, is exclusively provided by ECB, and the ECB
training programme. For all aspiring Officials, whatever level they wish to
attain, the ECB pathway provides them with a structured route, and support
from Cricket’s National body.
We are hoping to see strong support from clubs in nominating candidates for
the training. At the bottom of this letter are the details of the courses we are
running and an application form for clubs or candidates to complete. The cost
of the course will be £80 which will include all the course delivery and
administration together with an ECB workbook, an MCC official on-field Law
booklet, a Tom Smiths law book, a CRB check, Insurances and membership to
the ECB ACO for a year. On the successful completion of the course,
candidates will qualify for a 50%, or higher, reimbursement of the course fee
through their local leagues (criteria apply).
It would be much appreciated if you could forward this letter on to any
interested candidates at your club.

“Our priority is to recruit new Umpires and Scorers to actively participate and
enjoy standing in local recreational cricket. If they can be motivated through
our training and gain enthusiasm for officiating, there will be more Umpires
and Scorers involved in our game’.
