DEFINITION OF PORTFOLIO

A portfolio is a set of pictures by someone, photographs of their work, or examples
of theirwriting, which they use when entering competitions
or applying for work.
A portfolio is as much about showcasing your design approach, process, and results as it is
about the design itself. And without professional design experience, you may feel like you
can’t accurately convey this kind of information. However, the secret is to get a little creative.

A solid graphic design portfolio is ticket to professional success. It is a calling card and the way in—
the visual representation of all things that were been accomplished so far and a symbol for where
hope to be in the future.

FUNCTION OF PORTFOLIO

A portfolio is a document that highlights the work experience, skills and samples of graphic design that a
graphic designers posses. Keeping the portfolio current and making sure that it reflects the best possible
that are crucial steps in getting and keeping clients. It shows to the world their vision on what good design
is, in its purest form.

The portfolio itself is the way the designer has found to demonstrate their design skills and
vision, without all the constraints that projects sponsored by clients usually have. It is a
great tool that helps market a graphic designer and also a great tool for potential clients to
access the talents and skills of graphic designers before they hirepeople.

It also to evaluate by the client whether the graphic
designer is up to mark for what they are looking for
in a graphic designer.

types of portfolio

BOOK portfolio

A printed book or digital gallery designed solely to showcase an artist’s best work. Printed portfolio books tend to
be edited and curated to a higher level. here tends to be a more thorough explanation and rationale.

The artist knows that there is a time and cost implication to everything they choose to include. Not only does this
tend to result in a well thought through, impactful piece of work, but professional clients (the kind that designer

want to work with) respect the thought and effort that goes into this process.
Printed portfolio books are also not restricted by screen or device size.

Talk about impactful. And, not only can prospective clients see your work as it was meant to be seen, but they have
the option to touch and feel it. Print is tactile and offers viewers a new way to absorb your images.

Printing itself offers unlimited creative possibilities; a chance for designer to present their original work in a truly
unique way.

Print is the best way to realize designer rue creative vision.

EXAMPLE OF BOOK portfolio :

WEBSITE portfolio

A portfolio website is a special type of personal website, created with the purpose of presenting the creative work
of its owner. At its most basic form, a portfolio website provides professional information about an individual or a

company and presents a showcase of their work.
One of the great things about portfolio websites is that designer have a lot of flexibility in how they choose to
display their best work and make it shine. They can have a collection of detailed pictures for each project, also
they can have a gallery with a single image for each project. They will have endless ways to arrange and display they

on line portfolio, with no restrictions.
To display compelling content and to provide basic information in a way that leads to getting more clients.

EXAMPLE OF website portfolio :

E-portfolio (pdf / e-book)

An electronic porfolio (e-portfolio) is a purposeful collection of sample student work, demonstrations, and artifacts
that showcase student’s learning progression, achievement, and evidence of what students can do.

An academic ePortfolio is a digital collection created by a student of their course-related work, like essays, posters,
photographs, videos, and artwork; academic ePortfolios can also capture other aspects of a student’s life, such as

volunteer experiences, employment history, extracurricular activities, and more.
E-Portfolio can also function as a tool for faculty to monitor and evaluate program effectiveness. To collectively ex-
amine student achievement for program improvement, portfolio can be a useful way to organize, sample, and assess

what students gained out of the program.

EXAMPLE OF website portfolio :

Motion portfolio

Motion graphics can illustrate complex ideas visually. Some ideas especially big, are hard to explain with words or
still images. A few seconds of motion graphics can clear everything up perfectly. The visual style of motion graph-

ics appeals to a wide range of viewers.
Strictly speaking, motion graphic designers take abstract elements such as lines, shapes, and type and make them
move within a frame. More broadly speaking, we also add photographs and move them around, or we move stuff

around in front of an image we use as a background.
This way you can promote your brand and can able to make your audience more engaged or reach. People love to
watch video content this time. You can see nowadays video tutorials are more effective than previously was. Also,

people love to see or watch the book summary through videos.
Motion Graphics combines animation and graphic design, main goal being the information presentation through
graphics and animated texts. Often accompanied by voice overs, Motion graphics takes the whole idea of project-

ing an idea to the best level of creativity.

EXAMPLE OF motion portfolio :

Design Trends 2021

1. Abstract Minimalism

- Exaggerated proportions and poses of characters
- Flat, geometric shapes overlaid on top of each other
- Bright block colours, no gradients, minimal shading/noise
- Over-saturated colour palettes (this is because consumer experience is predominantly on screen, not print)

2. Empty Lines

- Combination of block colours and empty lines
- Organic shapes (curves, spheres, rounded rectangles)
- Fluid motion in animation and motion design

3. Symbol revival

- In design, the little things matter. Colored bars on a waving banner can unify a nation, and a shape as simple as
a red octagon can save lives at a busy intersection.
- Designers are leveraging this power in 2021 to create aspirational icons of resilience, growth and empowerment.
- Historically, symbols like these have been about universality. Whether this comes in the form of conveying
warnings or identifying a cause under shared iconography, the power of classic symbols lies in their ability to
transcend language.

4. Tactile 3D, Digital Miniatures

- Heavily stylised characters with realistic motion
- Tactile, clay-like aesthetics
- Turntable animation

5. Retro futurism

- Retro futurism, the sci-fi dreams of a bygone era, is appealing for the spectacular ways in which the past got it
wrong.
- But through the ages, retro futurism as a visual style has prevailed due to its bold imagination with a surprising-
ly optimistic outlook.
- Stylistically, this optimism finds its expression through an emphasis on bright colors, computer-inspired typog-
raphy, and curves.

6. Framed Environment

- Creative containers
- Invisible boundaries
- Compact storytelling devices

7. Irreverent characters

- Good design can tell a story. Great design makes that story unforgettable. For 2021, many graphic designers are
looking to ditch abstract visuals in favor of quirky characters. And the more personality these characters embody,
the more memorable they become.
- Concept illustration lies at the heart of this trend—providing not only character poses but personality in the
form of a hand-drawn approach. It’s why these styles can range from detailed cross-hatching to the simplified
shapes, lines, and colors of modern cartoons.

8. Comics and pop art

- And this year, graphic designers are resurrecting the grainy colors, the heavy inking and the action lines of vin-
tage comics.
- Born of an era of primitive printing technology, comics often used halftones, or simplified dot shading, to rep-
resent color. Nowadays, this approach can breathe new life into modern minimalist trends such as flat design
through grainy texture and depth. Similarly, web designers can break the grid with slanting panels and skewed
shapes to create the sense of drama and motion.

9. Elements of nature

- There’s no avoiding it: many people spent much of this year cooped up inside. That would go double for de-
signers who might have experienced their work-from-home freelance lifestyle begin to resemble solitary confine-
ment.
- Whether this trend manifests in the form of leafy patterns, earth-tone color schemes or illustrations of breath-
taking vistas, graphic design is going green. The best part about this trend is we are seeing it reach beyond envi-
ronmentally-oriented products.
- The effect of nature imagery is to impart serenity, renewal and growth .
