CASA SOM November 2022

CASA SOM November 2022

NOVEMBER 2022

Firstly, I would like to thank the Chiropractic Association of South
Africa (CASA) for nominating me as the member of the month
for November 2022. I feel honoured and humbled to share my
chiropractic journey.

My name is Akshoy Devnarain and I am at the final steps of
completing my masters in chiropractic at Durban University of
Technology (DUT). I am truly grateful to have been given the
opportunity to study and become the person I am today.
All thanks to my mum who has been my pillar of strength and who
had constantly guided and shown me the correct way forward.

Growing up I was never 100 percent sure what I wanted study
and pursue, however, I always knew that in the back of my mind
that my passion was to help others. My first exposure to the
chiropractic profession began in my matric year in 2016, when
I was applying to study and came across the chiropractic course. I was curious and intrigued,
as this was my first time ever reading about the profession. After researching and reading more
about chiropractic, my interest was heightened and naturally I had so many questions. At this
point I knew that speaking to actual chiropractor would be my best bet in getting all my questions
answered, so I decided to visit my nearest chiropractor, Dr Henry. I am grateful to have had a
wonderful learning opportunity to observe Dr Henry in practice and treat patients. I was amazed
at how chiropractic care can positively impact a patient’s life, and it soon became clear and
I realized that chiropractic was the career that I wanted to pursue.

My first-year journey of studying chiropractic started in 2017 and ever since then I have learnt
and accumulated abundant amounts of knowledge. I am truly thankful to have had wonderful
lecturers share and pass down their knowledge to me, especially in my last two years, during
clinical activity. I will always remember our talks and discussions on the values of good practice
and patient management. I would also like to mention, that apart from treating patients at the
DUT Chiropractic day clinic, I am truly fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend and treat
patients at community outreach events. These events have improved on vital skills for me, such
as, patient interaction, as well as taught me to
step out of my comfort zone in certain situations.

I can confidently say that through the ups and
downs and challenges faced in my chiropractic
journey, I have positively grown and matured as
an individual. I wish to continue on this positive
path and carry it with me for the rest of my
chiropractic career.
