ُ‫َمََت يَْبلُ ُغ الْبُْنيَا ُن يَْوم اً َك َمالَه‬
‫إِ َذا ُكْن َت تَْبنِي ِه َوغَْْيَُك يَ ْه ِد ُم‬

When will an edifice
Attain its completion
If you are building it
While someone else
Is pulling it down?

‫َشْر ُح الْ ُمْفَرَدا ِت‬

‫ بُْنيَان‬building, structure.
ً‫( َك َم َل ُك ُمول‬a-u), to be complete.
‫ َك َمال‬completion. This is ‫ا ْس ُم الْ َم ْص َدر‬.
ً‫( َه َد َم َه ْدما‬a-i), to pull down a building.
ً‫( بَلَ َغ بُلُوغا‬a-u), to reach.

‫‪َ.‬مْفعُول فِيِه ‪ is‬يَْوماً‬
‫‪ُ.‬م َضاف ‪َُ and it is‬مْفعُول بِِه ‪َ is‬ك َمالَ(ه)‬

‫‪َ ...‬وغَْْيَُك يَ ْه ِد ُم‬

‫‪َ.‬واُو اْْلَا ِل ‪َ The waaw is‬وغَْْيَُك‬
‫‪ُ.‬مْبتَ َدأ ‪ is‬غَْْيُ غَْْيُ( َك)‬
‫‪ And the sentence followingُthe‬يَ ْه ِد ُم‬

‫‪َ , and therefore‬خَب ‪mubtada' is its‬‬
‫‪ِ.‬ف َمَ ِل َرفْع ‪it is‬‬

About the Couplet

Abu l Tayyib al Mutanabbii (915 965 CE) was one
of the greatest poets of Arabic.
In this couplet he extols the qualities of a horseman
as a chivalrous warrior.
