Eric Harris & Dylan Klebold
1996 Harris created a website on America Online which was a host site for the video
game Doom.
He also started a blog talking about parents, school and friends. By the end of 1996 he
was talking about causing mischief and gave directions on how to make a bomb
1997 the blog started showing anger & hate. Back in 97 the internet was nothing like
today, and they didn’t have many followers.
However one friend, Brooks Brown, told his mother about the site. She contacted the
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, as the Harris site had made several death threats
leveled at teachers, students and Brooks Brown.
Investigator Michael Guerra found evidence of threats and statements that Harris and
Klebold possessed bombs. Guerra drafted a search warrant for the homes of both killers,
but it was never filed in 1997.
01-30-98 both were arrested for stealing tools and equipment from a parked van. They
were sentenced to juvenile diversion. Both had to take anger management.
Both had journals and videos showing they wanted to have a major bombing that would
rival the Oklahoma City event.
Oklahoma City, April 19, 1995
168 KILLED, more than 800 injured
@ the Alfred P. Murrah Federal
Building
Harris and Klebold were able to purchase guns, explosives & ammunition. They
documented everything on video. The FBI has sealed all those videos.
Purchased 9mm guns, 12 gauge shotguns, rifle and made 99 improvised devices. They
sawed off the barrels and butts of the shotguns
The day of the massacre: Harris was armed with a 12 gauge shotgun he fired that gun
25 times. He also had a Hi-Point 995 Carbine 9mm with 13 ten round magazines. He
fired this weapon 96 times
Klebold was armed with a 9mm Tec 9 semi automatic. He had several magazines
(taped together combat style) he also had a 12 gauge double barrel shotgun. He fired
the Tec 9 a total of 55 times.
11:14am the two set off a bomb (timer) in a field 3 miles from Columbine HS, This was a
diversion to pull police away from the HS area. However, police and fire quickly extinguish the
fire
11:10am they both arrive at Columbine HS in separately. Harris parks in the junior lot at the
south entrance, while Klebold parks in the senior lot at the west entrance.
The cafeteria with its long outside wall with glass windows and ground level doors was between
the two cars.
They meet at Harris’s car and armed two 20-pound propane bombs. They put them in
a duffle bags and walk into the school. They place the bags in the cafeteria and walk
back outside to the individual cars.
The bomb was set to explode at 11:17am. At that time over 500 students would have
been in the cafeteria eating. The plan was for the bomb to collapse the building and
the two would shoot the fleeing students and arriving police and first responders.
Neil Gardner was the SRO for Columbine HS, he usually ate his lunch at that time in
the cafeteria. However, this day he went to his marked patrol car and had his lunch
overlooking what the students called the smoking pit.
In the parking lot Harris was approached by Brooks Brown, and it appeared that they
had patched up their dispute. Brown was shocked to see Harris as he was absent from
an important test that day. Harris told Brown, “I like you now. Get out of here.”
11:19am when the bomb didn’t explode, Harris and Klebold meet and walked
together into the school. They were wearing the long black trench coats
Propane bombs: undetected
They pulled the guns out from under the coats and opened fire on two 17-year old
students who had been sitting next to the glass west entrance. Rachel Scott was hit
four (4) times and died. Richard Castaldo was hit eight (8) times and is now
paralyzed from the waist down.
Harris removes his jacket and aims his 9mm carbine down the west staircase. He
shoots and hits three (3) students (they live). He then opened fire on a group of
students outside the school sitting in a grass area (2) were hit (they live)
Klebold walked down the steps back to the cafeteria and shot Lance Kirklin in the
face (he lives). Police think Klebold went back to check on the unexploded bomb.
Klebold then walked back upstairs.
The two were shooting at students and tossing pipe bombs. Most didn’t explode.
Teacher Patti Nielson & student Brian Anderson go out in the hallway to see what
the noise was all about. As the open the first of the two double doors, Harris and
Klebold open fire. Nielson is hit in the shoulder with glass and runs back to the
library and tells the students to hide. Anderson was caught between the doors.
11:22am Gardner gets a radio call that someone was down in the school
parking lot. He drove his marked patrol car to the area. He saw what he thought
was a person hit by a car on the ground. As he went to check on the person,
Harris saw him from his elevated position on the staircase and opened fire.
Gardner was 60 yards away, and he returned fire.
During that gun exchange, Anderson was able to escape and hide in a classroom
11:20am 52 students, 2 teachers and 2 librarians were hiding in the library. As
the two killers approached the library they were throwing bombs, which
exploded and caused damage to the lockers and walls.
11:29am they enter the library.
Harris: “Everyone with hats, stand up. This is for all the shit you’ve given us for
the past four years and all you jocks stand up, we’ll get the guys in the white
hats.”
When nobody answered or stood up, Harris said; “Fine I’ll just start shooting.”
First student shot was Evan Todd, who was under a desk. He was injured
They walked to the opposite side of the library where the computers were located
They put down the duffle bags they carried, loaded with ammunition. They reloaded.
Harris looks out the window and saw the police evacuating students from the windows
and yells; “Let’s kill some cops.” Both open fire on the police and students outside.
Police return fire
Klebold fires his shotgun at a table injuring 3 students.
Harris walked to the lower row of computer desks and fired a single shot without
looking. He killed Steven Conrow, 14.
Harris then fired at another desk where he injured Kacey Ruegsegger.
Harris then walks to another table and knelt down. He said “Peek-a-Boo” to Cassie
Bernall, 17. He then Killed her with a shot her in the had. He was holding his
shotgun with one hand, the recoil forced the gun back into his face breaking his
nose.
Harris then stood up and with a bloody nose walked to a table where Bree Pasquale
was sitting. She was frozen in fear to even hide under the table. Harris started
taunting her, asking is she wanted to die.
Patrick Ireland was under a desk and was going to help Makai Hall was shoot in the
knee. As Patrick peaked above the desk to see what was going on, Klebold shot him
twice in the head (he lives)
As Harris was about to shoot Bree Pasquale, Klebold yells “Reb, I found a nigger”
Klebold and Harris then knelt down at a table where Isaiah Shoels (18) , Mathew Kechter
(16) and Craig Scott (16) brother of Rachel…the first student killed. They taunted Isaiah
and Matthew.
Harris makes a contact shot to the chest of Isaiah Killing him
while Klebold killed Matthew. Craig, laid in the blood and pretended to be dead.
They walked around the library and continued shooting at desks. They reloaded again, and
Harris looked up and saw a student named John Savage, who was a friend of Klebold.
Savage asked if they were going to kill him, Klebold allowed Savage to leave.
11:35am they had killed 10 in the library, wounded 12 of the 56. They said that they were
tired of shooting people, maybe they should try using a knife.
11:36am they left the library
For the next 32 minutes they walked the halls of Columbine shooting at people and
throwing bombs. They did not kill any additional people.
12:08pm the first SWAT Team enters the building
12:10pm they committed suicide
