A B-52D returns from an Arc Light mission at U-Tapao AB in Thailand. The Strategic Air
Command made an unprecedented effort to counter the North Vietnamese offensive and
deployed over 200 of its giant bombers for South East Asia operations. They mainly operated
from bases in Thailand and Guam. (USAF)

The North Vietnamese offensive prompted the USAF to rush to South East Asia additional F-4
equipped units, bringing the number of Phantoms available to 400. They were ferried across
the Pacific Ocean from the United States during the Operation Constant Guard. An F-4E from
the 4th TFW is being refuelled by a KC-135 during the transit flight. (USAF)

These armourers are loading a B-52D bomber. The aircraft typically carried a load consisting
of no less than 108 bombs, including eighty-four 500lb and forty-two 750lb munitions. Their
round the clock bombardments broke the back of the North Vietnamese divisions. (USAF)

The USAF also sent in its new attack aircraft, the LTV A-7D to South East Asia by deploying
the 354th TFW. The 72 Corsair IIs of the wing operated from Korat AB in Thailand. (USAF)

The USAF began to introduce guided air munitions in significant numbers during Operation
Linebacker in 1972. That included the GBU-10 Paveway laser-guided bombs such as those
carried by this F-4D from the 433rd TFS of the 8th TFW of Ubon AB, Thailand. (USAF)

The F-4 Phantom was the American main fighter-bomber operating in South East Asia in
1972. In addition to those of the USAF, they were also deployed by the US Marine Corps and
the US Navy. This F-4B of the VF-111 from the USS Coral Sea is seen during a bombing

pass, dropping six Mk-82 500lb bombs. (US Navy)
