1.0 INTRODUCTION

Dato’ Sir Onn Jaafar was a Malayan politician who served as the 7th Menteri Besar of Johor from 1947 to 1950, then Malaya (now
Malaysia). He is alsothe founder and wasthe first President of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) from itsformation in 1946
to hisresignation in 1951 and wasalsoresponsiblefor the socialand economicwelfare of the Malays by setting up the Rural Industrial Development
Authority (RIDA).

2.0 BIOGRAPHY

Datuk Onn Jaafar was born in 1895 in Bukit Gambir, Jalan Gertak Merah, Johor Bharu. He was the third of
seven sons and seven daughters. His father Datuk Jaafar bin Haji Muhammad was the first Menteri Besar of
Johor during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim. Datuk Jaafar is of Bugis descent and comes from Daik. His mother
named Rugayah is from the Middle East, of Turkish descent. Datuk Onn was cared for by Sultan Ibrahim as his
adopted child since he was six years old.

Datuk Onn ended his bachelorhood and met his first mate with Che 'Rafiah Binti Abdullah and
was blessed with three children, namely Hawa, Rukiah and Cik Salehah. His marriage with Rafiah was not
long because he had returned after giving birth to Cik Salehah. Then Datuk Onn married Ms. Jamilah Binti
Othman and was blessed with a child, Azmir.

However, his marriage with Ms. Jamilah was not long and they divorced and Datuk Onn was
married to Datin Halimah Binti Husain and had six children, namely Tun Hussein, Gharib, Major Ja’afar,
Tahir, Nurziah and Nel. Datuk Onn and Datin Halimah lived as husband and wife for 41 years.

3.0 EDUCATION

Dato’ Onn Jaafar education is essentially starting at Sekolah Melayu Johor Bahru. Before being sent
to England, he was raised by an English woman with Tunku Mahkota Ismail, Tunku Abu Bakar and
Tunku Ahmad at the age of nine. Then studied at the Aldeburg Lodge school in England for six years.
He was an able student who excelled in sports. In his later years, he captained the school’s cricket and
football teams – an achievement for an Asian.

After completing his studies in England, he was returned to their homeland, Johor on
March 25, 1910 and continue his education at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar.

4.0 CAREER

❖ On September 1, 1911 at the age of 16 he began to serve the Johor government as a trainee clerk in the
Johor State Secretary's Office. Two months later he moved to the Johor State Secretary's Office. Two
months later moved to the Office of the British Advisor (British Advisor).

❖ In May, 1912 he served as Assistant General Clerk of the Medical Office and in July, 1912 he returned
to the office of State Secretary as Assistant General Clerk.

❖ August 1, 1913, Datuk Onn worked in the Johor Legal Adviser's Office, then in October 1914 worked in
the Indian Divisional Immigration Office and in the following year worked in the Johor Money
(Treasury) Office.

❖ By order of Sultan Ibrahim, Datuk Onn served as a cadet in the Johor Army in July 1917, ending with
the rank of Lieutenant. From Bukit Timbalan Johor Bahru he was transferred to the Office of the
General Advisor. Here too, he did not serve long because he was dismissed on 31 January 1920 by Sultan
Ibrahim due to a misunderstanding with His Majesty.

❖ He and his family have moved to Singapore. There he traded small businesses including cloth, silverware, copper,
food items such as crackers and so on. In 1922 he returned to work with the Johor Government as a temporary
additional officer in the land office.

❖ On 1 January 1923 he was appointed Head of the Rubber Control/Restriction Office in Muar. The following year
he was appointed Assistant Collector of Muar Land Revenue and later moved to Johor Bahru.

❖ He also worked as a journalist in Syarikat Warta Malaya owned by Syed Husin Alsagof from 1930 to 1933.
Later in 1934, several people from Syarikat Warta Malaya published the Malayan Board Weekly and the
Lembaga Daily. Datuk Onn acted as its author.

❖ In 1936 Datuk Onn was appointed by Sultan Ibrahim as a member of the Johor Executive Council.
However, Datuk Onn has accepted on the condition that he is free to express his opinion. On 1 June 1938
he was appointed as the Private Secretary to the Tunku Mahkota of Johor, doing the work ordered by the
Sultan whether personal, palace or government work.

❖ Datuk Onn got to know the Johor Pavilion in an exhibition held in San Francisco, USA in 1938.

❖ Due to Datuk Onn's contribution and close relationship with the Sultan, Datuk Onn's position was very
important to the Sultan. When World War and the Japanese occupation of Malaya Datuk Onn became
Chairman of the Johor State Food Control Office began January 1, 1942 until 1945.

5.0 CONTRIBUTIONS

❖ He served as the Batu Pahat District Officer of the era of the British colonial administration, but later resigned
for objecting to colonial policies. Onn Jaafar replaced Encik Ismail bin Datul Abdullah bin Abdul Rahman, a
district officer who was brutally killed by 'Three Star' guerrillas in Benut on 10 June 1945. [4] After Japan
surrendered, many Malays who worked as police and village chief have been arrested, disappeared and killed by
MPAJA between March-April 1945.

❖ In early 1946, he established the Association of Johor Malay Peninsula as the President. In March 1946,
representatives of various associations of Malay met in the first Malay Congress held at the Sultan Sulaiman
Club in Kuala Lumpur reach a decision and will establish one representing the Malays against the Malayan
Union.

❖ Malay Congress party held at the Istana Besar Johor Bahru in May 1946. Congress is what gave birth to
Datuk Onn as UMNO is the first Dipertua. In this year also, on 1 October 1946, Sultan Ibrahim appointed
Datuk Onn Datuk Jaafar as the Menteri Besar of Johor.

❖ After serving for three years, Datuk Onn resigned to devote full -time to UMNO after Sultan Ibrahim
warned him whether to choose to serve the government or lead UMNO. Datuk Onn chose to continue
serving as the President of UMNO. In 1946, the leadership of Datuk Onn against the occupation politically
until the fall of the Malayan Union and the establishment of the Federation of Malaya.

❖ Federation of Malaya Agreement 1948 was to maintain the status of the Malay Rulers, the tightening of the
conditions of citizenship for foreigners and give some privileges to the Malays.

❖ To restore the position of the Malays, Dato Onn had proposed that Umno membership is open to other
nations but opposition among UMNO Supreme Council due Malays National atmosphere when it is not
willing to accept such a radical change. The desire and ambition to uphold the Malay race continued with a
variety of proposals and actions. This opposition caused Dato Onn in the Sixth General Assembly
conference on 25 and 26 August, to resign as Yang DiPertua UMNO.

❖ Datuk Onn who has been appointed by the British Government as the Minister of Home Affairs has been
able to see from within the administrative and political problems of the country. Perhaps because of that, felt
the need for closer cooperation with other races and the supervision of the British believe that is necessary to
develop the Malays before independence.

❖ During the colonial government in the cabinet, Datuk Onn was appointed Chairman of the RIDA, a body
that seeks to elevate the economic status of the Malays. In education, the name of Datuk Onn known for his
interest in the progress of Malay children who bear such 'Scholarship UMNO' when he was in this party.

❖ After leaving Umno Datuk Onn establish the Independence of Malaya Party but did not win the support of
the Malays. In 1954, he created the National Party as making preparations for the elections of the
Federation of Malaya in 1955, Datuk Onn and his party did not win in the elections, but did not give up for
a place in national politics.

❖ He eventually won the seat, representing the Kuala Terengganu Selatan Parliamentary constituency in the
Federal election in 1959. By alone representing his party he tried to present his political views in a House
consisting of members from UMNO Alliance and other parties.

He died on Friday, 19 January 1962 due to a heart attack and his body was buried next to the tomb of
his father, the late Dato 'Jaafar bin Haji Muhammad at the Bukit Mahmoodiah Royal Tomb, Johor
Bahru, Johor.

7.0 CONCLUSION

As a fighter, his peace advocates had their own political stance. His intelligence and perseverance were
unmatched when he was at the forefront of UMNO politics and the country until it was recognized by all
circles. He was a nationalist political figure with high intellectual ability despite not setting foot in
university. He is also an orator as well as an author known for his amazing language abilities. Within five
years of intense political upheaval during the country's peak, he exists to hold the reins of leadership of
the Malays and shaping politics in the future.
