DEFINITION

Visualizing is an important reading strategy that good readers use to
help create mental images or movies in their minds to represent the ideas that
they read in the text. Visualization requires students to weave together their
own background knowledge, text evidence, and creativity to make an image in
their mind's eye to match the story or informational article that they are
reading. The images that they make help them to understand what they are
reading at a deeper level.

Visualizing is my favorite reading strategy to teach since it is not only
fun for students but truly helps them to dig deeper into what they are
reading. It is highly engaging for students and its interactive nature helps
readers of all levels, including struggling readers, connect with the text. In
fact, I have watched struggling readers blossom as readers when they put this
reading strategy into action.

Components Visualization Strategy

1. I visualize to help me predict what I will read and learn from the
text; have understanding when a reader is late with the story he is
reading then visualization will help in predicting the picture of the
continuation of the story the.

2. I visualize to help me clarify something in the text; is an activity to
visualize one or more parts in text that you want to see again
because when you read it before it was less clear or vague.

3. I visualize the character(s), object(s), or creature(s) in the text; is a
visualizing activity that is carried out to identify the characters,
objects and creatures that are inside the text can then be developed
according to the reader's fantasy.

Components Visualization Strategy

4. I visualize the events in the text; that is when readers use visualizing to
see events or events that happens in the reading. Generally the reader will
be able to sort these events so that the reader knows the plot of the story
he is reading. Readers can classify important information and remember it
as an essential part of the story.

5. I visualize the setting or place in the text; is when the reader wanders
visited the place described in the text and seemed to be there so that
other settings such as time and atmosphere can automatically identified.
exemplify this component as when someone who couldn't possibly not have
imagined Hogwarts reading Harry Potter. By placing the reader in the
current text trying to understand, of course, will really help him to
understand the content the story told by the author.

Components Visualization Strategy

6. I visualize the text by using my senses (seeing, smelling, tasting,
hearing, or feeling); namely when the reader using the senses of sight,
smell, taste, hearing and touch when He reads a text. The sensory
image that appears when reading a text will make the reader dive into
the story and dig deeper into the information contained in a reading.

7. I visualize the text by using a physical reaction (hot, cold, thirsty,
upset stomach, etc); at the time the reader is using physical reactions
when visualizing a reading. Like for example when reading billboards
containing drinks or food advertisements.

8. I visualize the text by using an emotional reaction (happy, sad,
excited, lonely, etc); that is, when the reader feels the emotion of
the story being read. Usually this component occurs more often when
reading novels or stories narrative.

Components Visualization Strategy

9. I visualize by using illustrations or text features in the text; where the reader
uses illustrations or features on in author-provided text such as tables,
diagrams, timelines, or graphs others to make it easier to visualize the content
of the reading. As when one visualizes the processes of the water cycle and
photosynthesis, of course it will be easier if you use the schematic presented by
the author.

10. I visualize by using a connection; when the reader connects the reading with his
personal experience to strengthen visualization. This experience has
implications for knowledge readers of the information contained in the reading.

11. I visualize to help me remember the text: is the last component the most crucial
in order to improve reading skills comprehension because it is from this process
that students can remember anything important from the reading to then be
built into a meaning corresponding.

Steps Using a Visualizing Strategy

1. Explain to students that picturing text in their minds is vital for
2. understanding it; (2) Show students a series of three or four pictures

(or show short video clips);
3. After each picture, have students close their eyes and visualize what

was in the picture;
4. Tell students to visualize a variation of each picture. For example, if you

showed them a picture of mountains, have them modify this mental image
to have several mountain climbers on the cliffs in a snowstorm;
5. Tell the students that this is what happens during reading: We start
with a rough image, and text makes us modify it with other details;

Steps Using a Visualizing Strategy

6. Have students visualize and imagine that they are in situations similar to
those that will be encountered in the text that they are about to study.
(You can have them put their heads down if they do not like closing
eyes.).

7. Next, move to the written text. Read aloud a text and stop after the
initial clues are given. Allow students to form an intial picture. Then read
on and stop at appropriate times to allow students to modify their
mental image. You also should model and describe your visualizing
processes while reading aloud;

8. As an option, play sound effects or music if appropriate;
9. Finally, have students visualize while they read their own text.

Advantages of Visualizing Strategy in Increasing
Capabilities

As one of the strategies that can be used to increase reading
comprehension skills, visualize has several advantages the other strategies
don't have. Visualization assist students in composing, interpreting texts and
remember significant events in the text. 32 perform visualization will immerse
students in the text and give an image that sticks to his memory so this
strategy will help students in understanding what they read. 8 reasons to
choose a visualizing strategy for improve reading comprehension skills for
students, namely:
1. Engages students in the text and makes it personal and memorable;
2. Develops active readers;
3. Allows for comprehension checkpoints while reading;

Capabilities

4. Permits children to share visual images with other students in the
classroom;

5. permits students to make shifts in their thinking;
5. Elicits memories and feelings of the reader;
6. Deepens comprehension; and (8) makes reading dynamic and exciting.

Performing visualizing activities will make students participate in
learning to read, so that students are no longer passive in learning. Siegler
in Papalia states that children are choosing a visual-based strategy will be a
better and more proficient reader than others. Another advantage, is when
visualizing applied with a fun activity that is imagining and draw. Both of
these activities are activities in accordance with elementary school age
characteristics.
