R ecently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that according to him the four important categories (castes) in India are – the poor, the youth, women and farmers and that, if uplifted, they can develop the country. He has always been speaking about inclusivity. Similar to Modi's thought process is this year's theme of International Women's Day - Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress, while the campaign theme is Inspire Inclusion. International Women's Day serves as a reminder of the progress made towards gender equality and the ongoing struggles faced by women worldwide. As we commemorate this day, it is essential to recognize the remarkable achievements of women across various fields and reflect on the work that still needs to be done to create a more inclusive and equitable world for all. Women have always played a crucial role in shaping societies, economies, and cultures worldwide. From advocating for women's rights to breaking barriers in male-dominated fields, women have demonstrated resilience, strength, and determination in the face of adversity. Their contributions have paved the way for progress and inspired future generations to strive for excellence. In politics, they have shattered glass ceilings and challenged traditional notions of leadership. From heads of state to grassroots activists, women have been at the forefront of movements for social change, fighting for justice, equality, and human rights. Women entrepreneurs have defied stereotypes and built successful enterprises that drive innovation and economic growth. They continue to excel as leaders, innovators, and change-makers in industries ranging from technology to finance to healthcare. While significant progress has been made in advancing women's rights and gender equality, much work remains to be done. Women still f a c e n ume r o u s c h a ll e n g e s, including discrimination, violence, and limited access to education and economic opportunities, workplace inequality and lack of opportunities. Addressing these issues requires collective action and a commitment to dismantling the structures of oppression and inequality that hold women back. In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of gender equality and women's empowerment. Governments, organizations, and individuals around the world have taken steps to promote women's rights and ensure equal opportunities for all. As we celebrate International Women's Day, let us honor the contributions of women past and present and recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for gender equality. Let us stand in solidarity with women everywhere and work together to create a future where all individuals, regardless of gender, can thrive and fulfill their potential. Let us continue to strive for a world where every woman and girl can live free from discrimination, violence, and injustice, and where their voices are heard and valued. G ender equality and women's empowerment are fundamental human rights and essential components of sustainable development. Despite significant progress in recent years, disparities persist worldwide, hindering the full realization of women's potential and the advancement of society as a whole. This article explores the importance of gender equality and women's empowerment, highlighting their impact on individuals, communities, and economies. Gender equality is not just a moral imperative but also a strategic one. Research consistently demonstrates that societies with greater gender equality enjoy higher levels of economic growth, improved health outcomes, and increased social cohesion. When women have equal access to education, employment opportunities, and decisionmaking roles, they contribute to more robust economies and more stable societies. Furthermore, gender equality benefits men as well, fostering healthier relationships, improved work-life balance, and greater overall wellbeing. Empowering women involves ensuring their equal participation in all spheres of life, from politics and economics to education and healthcare. This requires dismantling barriers such as discriminatory laws and social norms that perpetuate gender-based violence, limit women's access to resources, and constrain their agency. Empowerment strategies must address the intersectional nature of gender inequality, acknowledging the unique challenges faced by women from marginalized communities, including women of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those with disabilities. Key Areas of Focus: Education: Providing girls with equal access to quality education is essential for breaking the cycle of poverty and promoting gender equality. Educated women are more likely to participate in the labor force, make informed decisions about their health and well-being, and contribute to their communities' development. Economic Empowerment: Closing the gender gap in employment and entrepreneurship is crucial for achieving economic parity. This involves addressing wage disparities, promoting women's access to credit and financial services, and creating supportive environments for women-owned businesses to thrive. Political Participation: Increasing women's representation in politics and decision-making positions is essential for ensuring that their voices are heard and their interests are represented. This requires enacting policies that promote gender quotas, encourage women's political leadership, and combat gender-based discrimination in electoral processes. Health and Well-being: Improving women's access to comprehensive healthcare services, including sexual and reproductive health services, is vital for promoting their well-being and autonomy. This includes addressing barriers such as lack of access to contraceptives, maternal mortality, and gender-based violence. To sum up, gender equality and women's empowerment are not only human rights imperatives but also prerequisites for achieving sustainable development and social justice. By investing in initiatives that promote women's rights and address the root causes of gender inequality, we can create a world where all individuals have equal opportunities to thrive and contribute to a more just and equitable s o c i e t y. It is imp e r a ti v e t h a t g o v e r n m e n t s , c i v il s o c i e t y organi z a tions, busine ss e s, and individuals work together to accelerate progress towards gender equality and ensure that no one is left behind. Sister Lucy The Flame that Ignited Change ittle did Sr. Lucy Kurien, LFounder of Maher, realize that an incident would lead her to doing a greater service to humankind than she was already doing. Born in Kerala and migrated to Mumbai in 1969, Sister Lucy was working with the HOPE center as a Catholic nun. Circa1991. A pregnant woman knocks on the centre’s door, asking for shelter because her husband was threatening to kill her. “I realized her plight was genuine, but we had no place for her, nor did I have the authority to take her in. So I asked her to return the next day when my superior would return. That very night, my prayers were suddenly interrupted by horrific shouting outside, and when I ran out to investigate, I recognized, with horror, that the same woman was engulfed in flames. Her husband had poured kerosene on her, and set her on fire. I scrambled to put out the fire, and rushed the woman to the hospital, but both mother and baby died that night. That incident shaped my fate,” Sr. Lucy narrates. The Beginning of a New Journey This incident left Sr. Lucy devastated and she vividly recollects that for six years she struggled to come to terms with this heinous incident. “I realized that I had to do something for such women, and as a result I founded Maher in 1997. Since then, Maher has provided refuge and rehabilitation to women suffering from abuse, starvation or neglect,” shares Sr. Lucy. From here began the inception of Maher that has stood the test of time and rose up to all the challenges for a humane cause. Thus, from the flames of tragedy, rose the seeds of hope. Against all Odds Sr. Lucy started this project in an unknown area, as a 100% secular and non-Christian organization, with a motive to help society, for no personal gain. But roadblocks were already waiting for her. Working without knowing the local language, and with little knowledge of the local culture, being a woman and unmarried at that in a male dominated society were huge challenges. “As a Christian nun, I also faced threat from the local community which regarded my work with suspicion. Making Indian Heritage Popular Ujwala Khandekar ndia is a land of rich heritage and in what other way could we show it to I the world than conducting tours of our heritage sites? That's exactly what Ujwala Khandekar, Director of Indicult Heritage Foundationand Dnyaanyatra Pvt Ltddoes. Ujwala is in the business of promoting India's heritage through knowledge sharing and conducting tours to heritage sites in India and abroad through many of her companies. “I am often asked as to what prompted me to take to this less treaded path given that I have a commerce background and have also spent considerable time teaching in schools and corporates. Both quite unrelated fields per se. Actually, I was privileged to have travelled extensively across length and breadth of the country, first as a child with my parents because my father was a railway officer and later with my husband who was in the Indian Army. Travelling, observing, intermingling, assimilating, learning and having lots of fun while doing all these comes so very naturally to me. And that prompted me to take on this field first as an employee in a company operating in this field and later starting my own business. It gives me a chance to express myself in addition to contributing a bit to the society as well,” explains Ujwala. Navigating through Challenges Ujwala shares that she had her bit of challenges as an entrepreneur and as a woman as well but she overcame them to be where she is today. “As a woman I have faced all the challenges any other working woman faces balancing work and home. That I guess is given for all woman entrepreneurs and I would not dwell much on those,” says Ujwala adding that like any other entrepreneur she too faced challenges resulting from some bad business decisions which many new entrepreneurs make. “Those I guess are on the job training. The biggest challenge, however, for me was to make a mark in a field dominated by some very entrenched personalities/interests who always looked at this domain from a very conservative lens and were not ready to change or cede space. Charting my own course thus was the only option albeit with some very difficult choices,” she shares. Swimming with the Tide COVID has been a defining moment for many entrepreneurs and it was for Ujwala as well. COVID hit the entire tourism industry badly. “We could not move out which is what we do for our living. I had just started and wanted to make a mark. But COVID also made Zoom a household name. It was then that I came up with this idea to start Virtual Site Tours or ViSiT. I never looked back from there and online platform is my main stay for work and for spreading awareness of the subject. I have completed more than 100 episodes of my weekly online programme called Dnyaanyatra and it seems that we have just started. Wise Words To new entrepreneurs, Ujwala advises, “Entrepreneurship is tough but is highly rewarding in many ways. For me having an unflinching belief in your product, being agile to meet the market needs, having an ear to the ground and above all constantly learning is one of the ways to stay ahead of the curve. And there is no substitute to sheer hard work”. Ujwala Khandekar Director - Indicult Heritage Foundation and Dnyaanyatra Pvt Ltd 20 | www.thebusinesstycoons.com | www.gibf.biz

Tribal Mensa Nurturing Program Giving Wings to the Underprivileged Girl Students Women have spread their wings far and wide in the past few decades, and there is practically no turf that women are not in. But there are still many girls out there whose talent, if channelized in the appropriate manner at the right age, would increase the presence of women dramatically in all the fields. While the privileged ones can get their IQs checked, many of them are deprived of it due to ignorance or because they are underprivileged. Here comes the Tribal Mensa Nurturing Program (TMNP). Its Founder, Dr. Narayan Desai is called an Ecological Priest and has a PhD in Restoration of Ecology and in Vedic and Puranic Literature. The Tribal Mensa Nurturing Program (TMNP) is not just an initiative; it is his dream - a dream of unlocking the hidden potential within the tribal children of India. Dr. Narayan Desai's vision transcends conventional boundaries, reaching into the hearts and minds of those often overlooked by society. An Illustrious Journey The TMNP is an emerging chapter of Mensa International. This is an initiative working to contribute to nation building through identifying, nurturing and empowering every underprivileged gifted child in India so that no gifted child is ignored in our country. “We c r e a t e d T M N P's u n i q u e indigenous non-academic nurturing program to signify a commitment to h o listi c d e v e l o pme n t b e y o n d traditional academic metrics. By identifying and nurturing potential m e n t o r s a n d l e a d e r s f r o m underprivileged communities at a young age, we aim to create a ripple effect of progress within these communities. This approach is likely to have a lasting impact on the social and economic fabric of these regions,” explains Dr. Desai. They aim at establishing a platform for underprivileged gifted children across India to develop and utilise their full potential. Giftedness refers to having exceptional intellectual abilities as measured by standardised academic assessments. An intelligence quotient of 130 and above is considered as gifted. Only 2% of world's population falls under this category. The main four categories that a gifted kid goes through a r e , T M N P S h o d h ( G i f t e d Identification), TMNP Parikshit ( G ift e d A ss e ss m e n t), T M N P Samvardhan (Gifted Nurturing), TMNP Sangopan (Gifted Nourishing). Since 2016, TMNPis focusing more on giftedness in girl children, because they believe that a girl child holds the power to change and prosper two homes at a time after her marriage. Nurturing and nourishing the giftedness at young age brings in long-term richness. Around 10 years back people were doubtful about TMNP's success, to which Dr. Desai answered - TMNP Bharati, means who rejoice in the knowledge. It is a thought that brings balance in educational achievement, family responsibilities and economic empowerment. It is a methodology to build gifted Mentors at grassroots. One such grassroots leader is Aishwarya Shingade, studying BA (Psychology). She has overcome the societal constraints of getting married after primary education and is now c o o r d i n a ti n g T M N P B h a r a ti successfully. There are more than 25 such girls are representing their leadership skills at ground level for nation building. AStrong Support System Bharati girls have a platform to hone their leadership skills - TMNPSanyuja. SanYuJa aims to empower the gifted underprivileged girls who have to take up the responsibilities of a home and family after their education while maintaining propriety in society. The SanYuJ a r epr e s ents “The girl possessing the good qualities, giving rational and good deeds to the students entering in the Yuva stage i.e. entering in the age group of 15-24, to make them aware of moralities by uniting/joining her giftedness”. The aim of Sanyuja is to bring sustainability in the system by cultivating and enduring the gifted qualities she possess. he global pandemic and the resultant lockdown Twas a game-changer in more ways than one. While some faced financial issues, others navigated through it and, some others who made the most of the crisis emerged with ideas that later went on to mark their success stories. Hemangi Sachin Diwate, Owner of Elite Nutra who manages a fully certified food business echoes the same story, that of an entrepreneur who saw opportunity in adversity. She calls herself a Home-baker. How it all Started? “I started my journey from 2020, during the lockdown. I already knew how to bake a cake, but I never thought of taking this skill to a business level until many of my friends and relatives encouraged my baking and suggested me to run a baking business. So taking their advice, I slowly started taking birthday orders. After constant demands from my customers, I did a bit of research and then started making healthy tea time or diet cakes, healthy laddoos and protein bars. Over the time, I also embraced my culinary skills and started taking party orders,” narrates Hemangi. Taking her business ahead, she started making Diwali faral (sweets) from the last two years and her faral has reached overseas, like in the US, Sweden, UK, Paris and many more places. “In this busy age, many people don't really get the time to prepare the delicacies that have elaborate processes. For them we have started making instant gravy premixes and breakfast premixes, which saves time, and gives you a delicious, healthy and preservative-free taste,” adds Hemangi. Defeating the Challenges When she started her entrepreneurial journey, there was a scarcity of orders. She had limited orders from limited customers. “But as I started to publicise more about my business, gradually the orders started to increase. Eventually, there was a time when I could not complete all the orders alone in the given amount of time and had to find helpers to assist me! I think that time constraint is a challenge that I frequently face as I find it difficult to complete and deliver all the orders in time.
