Edition 4: October - December 3 FOREWORD ASSOC. PROF. DR. NG SIEW FOEN Director UMK International Time flies when we are having a great time! Indeed 2022 has been a great year for UMKI. Despite the challenges faced, we ended the year with a huge bang. The number of international students registered has exceeded the KPI set by the ministry for UMK. The number of students involving in both credit and non -credit mobility programs has surpassed the number expected. Humbly, I would like to thank everyone in UMKI for their commitment and continuing support in ensuring the success of this small but significant international office of UMK. Indeed, alone we can do so little but together we can do so much. May we keep this spirit and determination unshaken, with courage, faith and great effort, we shall achieve everything we desire. Let’s pray for another superb year ahead.

Edition 4: October - December 33 MARKETING As Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) is walking into the 17th year of establishment, it is indeed timely to market itself globally. In the past 3 years, a lot of efforts has been taken to position UMK to welcome international students. To-date, we have 311 students from 18 countries consisting of undergraduates and postgraduates. Many challenges were tackled tactfully using social media as we also faced hindrance from the impact of Covid-19. Nevertheless, it paved way for online learning and this created a new era of teaching and learning for many education institutions. Moving forward to 2023, UMK International has segmented potential international student market from Indonesia, China, Thailand and India primarily. It is looking into opportunities to penetrate the South African region. The KPI will be to increase international intake by 200 students. This could be done with further harnessing the agent appointments. UMKI will be working to have 60 active agents promoting and continuously supporting them to bring in not just students but potential collaboration and networking that could be beneficial to all parties involved. UMK International is open to work with other public universities to co-organise international events like seminars or conferences. This will create the visibility we are seeking and also further strengthen our position globally. Lastly, UMK International will continuously seek to improvise the service rendered to its international students to ensure they have a good memory being a UMK student!
34 UMK International INTERNATIONALISATION Internationalisation and mobility programs are organizedintentionally to empower students, staff and institutions with learnings and engaging with more established institutions abroad. It is essential to place Universiti Malaysia Kelantaninternationally and be recognised as a leading entrepreneurial university in Asia. For the year 2023, UMK International’s goal of internationalisation is to increase the university’s engagement with international institutions in Southeast Asia (Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam) and Eastern Asia (Japan, Korea and China), as there is a high potential for collaboration with these countries. UMK will receive more international visits and collaboration offers in the next few months. UMK International also aims to focus on the current active MOUs (Memorandum of Understandings) and encourage faculties to conduct more academic and non-academic activities with their MOU partners. This can be achieved by giving the faculties our full support in terms of communication and assisting in the organising of the programs to ensure effective programs are being conducted between the universities and institutions. The cross-border movement among students has dramatically decreased for the past two years because of the pandemic, which caused the international exchange and mobility programs to be suspended. However, in 2022, UMK successfully organized more than 30 mobility programs, virtually and physically, that involved more than 800 students as the pandemic impact declined and the students’ movement gradually increased that year. UMK International also aims to increase the number of students joining inbound and outbound credit mobility programs. Global mobility programs can benefit students in many ways as they will be able to learn from a different institution or university and be exposed to different cultures and practices that can help them to improve their studies and life experience.
