SCAMS / FRAUD Every day senior citizens in South Carolina fall prey to unscrupulous individuals who seek to defraud and
scam the elderly. Consumer fraud is defined as any deception, pretense, false statement, false promise or
misrepresentation made by a seller or advertiser of merchandise. If you answer the phone and it sounds
too good to be true, just hang up. If a stranger appears on your doorstep, do not open the door. If
someone pretends to be a relative that is in trouble, simply hang up and check with your relative first. You
can protect yourself and others by reporting suspicious activities involving scams and frauds.

Our cover highlights the elegant artwork of Dr. Lidia Vallarino with her Forget Me Nots rendition.
Professor Vallarino is a mother and grandmother, she retired after a prodigious career as a
chemist, scholar, mentor, and pioneer of women in scientific research. Her pencil rendition of

Forget Me Nots is a reminder that our elder years can be an exciting time of creativity, where we
can use our resources to reinvent and reimagine our lives. We can continue to actively contribute
to our communities after retirement, even with obstacles and health challenges. Special thanks to
Dr. Vallarino’s daughter, Dorchester County Probate Judge Mary Blunt, for sharing her mother’s gift.
