The 42nd Thailand TESOL International Conference 2023 Handbook ‘ELT for the Future: Navigating the Possibilities 5 Thailand TESOL President’s Welcoming Message Most Venerable Professor Dr. Phra Dhammavatjarabundit, distinguished guests, speakers and participants, on behalf of Thailand TESOL, I am honored to welcome you all to the 42nd Thailand TESOL International Conference 2023 under the theme “ELT for the Future: Navigating the Possibilities”. This year marks the auspicious occasion of the “Centenary Celebration of Her Royal Highness Princess Galayani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra”, the royal patron of Thailand TESOL. Over the past three years that we had not met each other face-to-face, we all have witnessed these tremendous changes and challenges that have driven us to navigate new opportunities and possibilities for ELT transformation and the future forward. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has long been prevalent globally, our duties as teachers, scholars, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers worldwide have become even more crucial to uphold and strive for global and local solutions and implementations via our share-and-learn communities of practice. Thus, innovative, engaging, and resilient ELT practices, processes, and policies play significant roles that offer us state-of-the-art research and pedagogies for a better tomorrow, today! Thailand TESOL is fortunate to have the support of a great cadre of sponsors, including Regional English Language Office (RELO), the Australian Embassy, and the British Council. We also appreciate our international affiliates: TESOL, Inc. in the US; IATEFL in the UK; 21st Century English Education, China; JALT and JACET in Japan; ALAK, Asia TEFL, KATE, Korea TESOL in South Korea; PALT in the Philippines; ETA-ROC in Taiwan; FEELTA in Russia; TEFLIN in Indonesia; MELTA and PELLTA in Malaysia; CamTESOL in Cambodia; SEAMEO-RELC in Singapore; and DK Today. This onsite conference would not be possible without the support of our regional affiliates throughout Thailand. On this note, I would like to thank Srinakharinwirot University and the organizing committee members who have put great efforts into making this conference a successful and memorable one. Last but not least, I would like to thank all speakers and participants, whose efforts to bring us all together virtually are highly appreciated. I very much look forward to hearing your intellectual discussions, learning from your critical insights, establishing academic networking, and creating new friendships. Thank you. Singhanat Nomnian, Ed.D., SFHEA President of Thailand TESOL

The 42nd Thailand TESOL International Conference 2023 Handbook ‘ELT for the Future: Navigating the Possibilities 33 Plenary Speakers Ann McAllen Finding Balance in a Post-Pandemic World-Reflections, Thoughts and Ideas for Coping with the Stresses of Today’s Classrooms This plenary will begin by talking about some of the effects that the pandemic has had on students, teachers and education in general. Student engagement and access to technology were teaching issues pre-Covid, but the pandemic has compelled us to look at these topics in a new light and think about other possibilities for both of these issues. We’ll look at some of the lessons we have learned over these past few years and think about what we want to “keep” as we move forward. We will also touch upon the general stresses some of our students may be experiencing. Since academic success goes hand in hand with the overall health and well-being of our students it can be useful to incorporate stress management skills into some of our classroom activities. This offers us, as teachers, the chance for our students to develop skills in dealing with stress and can also help to establish a positive climate for learning. We will then explore some concrete ideas for dealing with the stressors of both teachers and students. Classroom techniques explored will be: creative writing, storytelling, music, inspirational quotes and humor. Biodata Ann McAllen has been working in international education programs since 1988. She has been an EFL/ESL teacher with a broad range of levels in a variety of settings (universities, community colleges, refugee/immigrant programs). Since 1995, she has been involved in developing and implementing teacher-training programs. She has worked with local teachers in Burma, India, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Mali, Moldova, Portugal, Russia, Thailand, Togo, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam. Other teacher-training projects include numerous in-country programs with the Peace Corps. Additionally, she developed specific Training of Trainer (TOT) courses. For two years in Ukraine, she implemented a TOT course in which the trainers are still

In Thailand and Vietnam, she worked with the TOT Network Training project which has trained 300+ trainers to date. Ian Clifford The Future of English in Thailand During a time of relentless change, including the Covid-19 pandemic, this panel discussion looks through the lens of two key pieces of British Council research on the future of English with a focus on Thailand. One is a ground-breaking global study to be published in March which explores key global trends by revisiting the work of Graddol (1997 and 2006). In English as a Subject in Basic Education (ESBE) in ASEAN research by Subhan Zein (2022), the ideological contestation of English policies in the multilingual context of ASEAN countries is reviewed. The research by Zein (2022) addresses a focus on form and accuracy to pass exams. It discusses the huge mismatch between high policy expectations for English and its low societal role. Similarly, it discusses a deficit in pre-service education in terms of practical components to prepare teachers for real teaching contexts. Unsurprisingly, Covid-19 has revealed that many teachers still need to develop important skills to teach online effectively. The talk will explore which strategies and approaches could potentially help alleviate this situation, including: • Moving to focus teacher education on practical components and improving teacher practicum. • Improving teachers’ professional conditions, recruitment, and professional culture. • Moving away from a ‘native speaker’ approach to one based on intelligibility, which uses mother tongue teaching when appropriate. • Enhancing teachers’ digital competence and focusing on the delivery of blended teacher education. Biodata Ian has worked in the UK as a primary school teacher and manager of school governor training, family literacy, community regeneration projects and supplementary schools. In Asia Ian has worked for the British Council in management roles with largescale teacher development projects in Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Ian is now the Head of English Programmes East Asia for the British Council.

He is currently the Chief Advisor of DC Consultants and Marketing Communications. He is also the CEO of Dhamdee Tour and DMG Books, a publishing house famous for publishing Dhamma books and Royal family books. The English Book Series of King Bhumibol: In Rememberance of HRH Princess Galayani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra The facts and achievements of the reign of Thailand’s late King Bhumibol Adulyadej was well known and highly saluted not only in Thailand but around the world. HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej declared the ancient Oath of Accession: “We shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese (Thai) people.” For more than half a century, King Bhumibol Adulyadej has sought to embody this idea, and in doing so has acquired profound wisdom. His example has always been an inspiration to all of his people, but he has also set down he thoughts in a more permanent form by initiating more than 4,800 royal projects. In the year 2006, all of Thailand took part in The Sixtieth Anniversary Celebrations of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's Accession to the Throne. In this year, Danai Chanchaochai started to write King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand book series, comprising of three volumes — From Prince to King, Strength of the Land, and By the Light of Your Wisdom. The book series wasfirst published in 2007. The official launched was held in October 2007 by the gracious presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra although she was admitted to Siriraj Hospital in

Nevertheless, the Princess kindly presided over this important book launch at the Dusit Thani hotel. Sadly, this was the last Royal event by Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, two months before she passed away on January 2nd, 2008, at Siriraj Hospital at the age of 84. The completion of this book series should be credited and contributed to HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra. Although the Princess’ name did not appear on the credit page of the book series, it was so clear how much she loved and cared for her younger brother, the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and HRH Princess Galayani Vadhana had always been the invisible light behind everything. Featured Speaker John Macalister John Macalister is Professor of Applied Linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and co-author of Teaching EFL/ESL Reading and Writing with Professor Paul Nation. John has had a long association with TESOL in Thailand and has worked in both Bangkok and Lampang. Literature and the Language Classroom The focus of this talk is on the use of literature in language classrooms, particularly classrooms where the language is being learned for academic purposes. I will begin by summarising the arguments that have been made for and against the use of literature in these contexts, and explain why I see a place for such texts. One reason for their use is their contribution to the development of critical thinking, a skill seen as essential in the 21st century. Another reason is their contribution to reliability in assessment, especially assessment of writing. After making the case for the use of literature in the language classroom, I will illustrate two ways in which they can be used.
The 42nd Thailand TESOL International Conference 2023 Handbook ‘ELT for the Future: Navigating the Possibilities 38 However, I also recognise that there are some caveats to bear in mind. First, not all literature is suitable; short forms are preferable to long forms. Second, literature that is used needs to be comprehensible for the learners. Furthermore, teachers have to be aware that they are not teaching literature; rather, they are using literature to achieve language learning goals. Featured Speaker Stefanie Shamila Pillai Professor Dr. Stefanie Shamila Pillai began her teaching career as an English language teacher at her alma mater, the Senior Methodist Girls’ School in Kuala Lumpur. She is currently a Professor at the Department of English, Faculty of Languages & Linguistics, Universiti Malaya. Her areas of research include varieties of English and language policies and language use in multilingual contexts. She has published widely in these areas, as well as on Melaka Portuguese, an endangered language in Malaysia. She recently co-edited a book on research focusing on indigenous communities in Malaysia. Taking Ownership of English Language Education This presentation shifts the focus of English language education (ELE) away from learners to English language educators by addressing several questions related to their sense of ownership as educators, both at the secondary and tertiary levels of education. Among the questions are: (I) How do teachers navigate the present and the future of ELE within the context of current national or local language and education policies? (ii) To what extent are they able to take ownership of their teaching practices? For instance, how do they manage the languages that their students speak? (iii) How do they prepare themselves and their students for a rapidly changing world? (iv) To what extent do they see themselves as agents of change? Although the reference point for this presentation will be the Malaysian context, it is hoped that these questions will spark conversations revolving around similar questions in other ELE contexts including Thailand.
The 42nd Thailand TESOL International Conference 2023 Handbook ‘ELT for the Future: Navigating the Possibilities 39 Featured Speaker Pattamawan Jimarkon Pattamawan Jimarkon is an associate professor in higher education pedagogies at Uniped, University of Stavanger, Norway. She is a teacher trainer, applied linguist and discourse analyst. She specialises in issues of language and interculturality and their relevance in teaching in higher education. Her research is centred around understanding how language is produced, taking into account both the linguistic content and its sociolinguistic context. Navigating Diversity in Teacher Training and Teacher Development in Higher Education The talk discusses why intercultural competence is a key competence for teacher educators, teachers and students in higher education. It stretches far beyond the abilities to function effectively across cultures, to communicate with people from other cultures, and to think and act appropriately. Interculturality is the mindset of social justice, an essential element in international as well as domestic higher education in the preparation of global-ready graduates for the modern world. Cultivating intercultural competence should be an integral part of the process of teacher training and teacher development to engage future and current teachers in intercultural dialogue. I will draw on some cases in international higher education settings to highlight some practical and theoretical underpinnings to illustrate how we can shape and reshape the democratic dialogue so that greater understanding and connection can occur across those involved and impacted.
