Lovefoodies was founded in 2017 as an online business by Nur Hidayah, who started out as a home baker with no prior knowledge of baking techniques. However, recognizing the profitability of baking, she enrolled in classes to improve her skills. Over time, her small business grew as she gained more and more customers. This success led her to expand to a larger location, which is where Lovefoodies bakery is now located. LOVEFOODIES BACKGROUNDS Lovefoodies become bigger during the Malaysian Movement Control Order as a home-based baking business. However, due to high demand and limited space, they relocated to Semenyih, Selangor, and opened a café and bakery, recognizing the opportunity to expand. Initially offering only brownies and cream puffs, the owner took classes to learn how to bake various types of cakes and pastries. Today, Lovefoodies provides catering services with a variety of desserts, in addition to serving coffee and full meals at the café. They also supply cakes to other businesses, including vendors. Previously, they had supplied cream puffs to a gas station, but have since discontinued that arrangement. Slow down and enjoy your coffee. BY SYAHIRAH 06

"Sometimes you just need a shoulder to cry on" "My eldest sister did business in the bakery industry as well. She used to teach me about baking and share recipes with me " said Nur Hidayah. At first, it was more about survival and gaining income for the sake of her family, but she was inspired to follow her sister's footsteps after she tried her sister's product. So, she decided to start her own business after she moved to Selangor while her sister did business in Terengganu. BAKING RUN IN THE FAMILY BY MUHD IZZUL 09 There is always an upside down in doing business and there is no exception for Lovefoodies. Her husband is her main support when she was down or facing challenges. Her family and friends were there as well and even helped promote her business. Nur Hidayah also shared some of the best things she experienced while operating her bakery business. One of them was being able to join events. She considered it her best experience because she feel closer to her customer and it is exciting to gain new customers. The events they joined were in hospitals and offices in some Ministries of Putrajaya. They focus on government workers customers when they join that kind of event.

"There have been times when we experienced a shortage of certain supplies, such as eggs, which have affected our ability to produce certain products and fulfill customer orders". WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OBSTACLES THAT LOVEFOODIES HAVE FACED WHILE BEING IN THE BUSINESS SECTOR? During the interview with Nur Hidayah, she shared some of the obstacles that she has faced during her time in the business sector. One of the obstacles is the rise in price for raw materials. As the cost of raw materials has increased over time, it has become increasingly challenging to maintain profitability while keeping prices affordable for customers. 10 Furthermore, lack of supplies such as eggs have affected her ability to produce certain products and fulfill customer orders. Nowadays, The coffee and cafes industry is highly competitive. Nur Hidayah, the owner of Lovefoodies, has mentioned that there are new cafes popping up frequently. This has made it challenging to stand out in a crowded market and attract new customers. Other than that, the competition amongst the bakers themselves. In addition to competing with other cafes and businesses, there is also competition amongst the bakers themselves. This can lead to pressure and a constant need to innovate and improve their products to stay ahead. BY NAJIHAH

11 Lastly, marketing plays a vital role in promoting and selling products. Slow marketing efforts may result in lower brand recognition and fewer sales, further hindering the success of the product. The product needs to be strong in order to support their sales and be supplied to other shops. It is because Nur Hidayah said that their current location is a little less strategic. This will cause the marketing to be a little slow. She said that she has plans to make a central kitchen and be more towards a supplier to develop her business better. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OBSTACLES THAT LOVEFOODIES HAVE FACED WHILE BEING IN THE BUSINESS SECTOR? Self-taught bakers may also face failures during their product development phase due to their insufficient experience in baking techniques. Baking is a complex skill that requires a lot of knowledge and practice to master. Self-taught bakers may lack the proper guidance and training, leading to failures in their product development. Nur Hidayah said that she has attended a few baking classes before she opened Lovefoodies. However, she mentioned that these classes are quite expensive, with hands-on classes costing around RM300 and above, and creativity classes costing around RM700 above. This means that learning the necessary skills and techniques to develop successful products takes money, which may be a barrier for some self-taught bakers. BY NAJIHAH
