CREATIVE WRITING

I've never made a big fuss about who I was.
Knew at 10 after being molested by 2 Uncles, I was done with Men.
I watched Men dress, I watched Men speak unapologetically, I watched men period and decided being a
woman had no place in my life, you will never take advantage of me again.

I was built like a man, cept by the ass. Had a small chest, had a small moustache at 16, strange har-
mones I guess.Daddy didnt fight me, but he did say. "Youll find out soon enough that, acting as a man
and being one is two different thangs, you could never be a black man, further more I don't think you
could stomach it boy" he had called me boy. I didnt flinch.

" Daddy teach me how to work on cars, how to shave, what an interception is in football and the best
place to get my hat and shoes...He said very well..by the time Daddy trained me, he became concerned.
I pulled women more than a little bit, I was kinda cocky. I smelled rich, looked rich, and I read as much
as I could, Charles Dickins to Langston Hughes to world affairs.

Time I was 21, I was walking in Bars and included in most mens conversations. They werent bothered
by me. One night I had a dream, an angel said to me, theres nothing wrong with contrast, but the world
isnt ready, it will be hard..

I had a few encounters of " we dont want your kind here", a few fights and Mother was disenchanted for
a long time, she always wanted a girl. I was me though..the angel said I was merely contrast and I be-
lieved it.

Last night I ordered a pack a lucky strikes and an old fashioned neat and met a honey name Vivian. She
was heterosexual, but she talked to me for 3 hours. Showed me her nipples and said she sat on a pile of
gold, called her Vagina a honey pot. She bought me my last drink and said, Louise, you make a fine man
and I love the contrast and left with another man.

To this day I was wondering was she the angel. I wanted to be mad, possessive, I was already tipsy. But
I met a red hair white woman who liked my kind and negros. Had a Black souther drawl, green eyes and
milky breasts. We dissapeared, cuzz we had too.I was up with the Red Hair till Dawn.Found out I love blk
women, but she was smart, sassy and unapologetic like myself. She let herself out after coffee and ciga-
rettes.

I made myself some eggs and hash and was in deep thought all day. I stayed in and it rained..I was
grateful. I started singing our theme song..MI crooked letter Crooked letter, i, crooked letter crooked
letter i, hump back hump back i.

Black Single Mothers and the Child Welfare System examines the struggles women of color face in working with
the child welfare system and how social workers who investigate childhood abuse and neglect can effect positive
change. This book addresses intersectionality and ideological, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized oppression
and how it affects the safety, permanence, and well-being of children. Through research and case examples, the reader
will be immersed in a historical perspective of oppression faced by black single mothers involved with social service sys-
tems, examine ways oppression plays out in child welfare supports and services, and discover new integrated methods
of addressing oppression.
