For those of you who know my story and some that don't. I went from no
job, to being a supervisor in less than 2 months of being with MV Trans-
portation. I have been sober now (alcohol) for almost a year. When I tell
you God has answered EVERY ONE of my prayers He showed out! And this
is just the beginning...--

The Freedom To Be Me
BY: Frat Growing In Greatness
After my last break up about a year ago I found myself alone. I was accustomed to liv-
ing the life of a single mother of 2 daughters, along with being a partner in a relation-
ship. As a single mother of two I didn’t have much time for myself. Most of the deci-
sions I made were not just beneficial for me, but for them as well. I remember staying
in unhealthy relationships for support with maintaining a safe living environment. Now
that I no longer have children to raise, I needed to work on myself.
I made the decision to go see a Therapist. This was my opportunity to be vulnerable in
a safe place, and to open up about my past to prevent similar situations from reoccur-
ring in my future. My therapist helped me realize that I had developed a pattern for
survival. I learned that being alone was a fear for me. I had never been single for long-
er than 6 months over the past eight years.
I needed to develop goals that only included me. No more focusing on getting married
or finding a woman to spend the rest of my life with. I started taking myself out on
dates monthly. I had to learn about the things I like, along with the things that I don’t
like or want along with creating a list of non-negotiable. This showed me what I need-
ed to provide for myself while introducing me to me. During the reconstruction of self, I
no longer felt guilty for saying no, I began to feel good about the decisions that I began
to make for myself, that allowed me to start participating in the activities that I like. I
joined a Varsity Gay kickball League and this allowed me to release unwanted frustra-
tions, exercise and feel good, to date playing Kick Ball for 2 years with no regrets for
doing what I like.
After Therapy I have been able to have a healthy relationship with myself, in having
the ability to actually love me has been amazing, because there was a time that I did
not feel worthy of me. I realized that I had to create a daily pattern that reflected what
I enjoy. I have developed positive tools that allows me to give myself permission to
heal, recover, stay healthy, loving, and worthy of having the Freedom to be me without
defending me.

Black Single Mothers and the Child Welfare System examines the struggles women of color face in working with the
child welfare system and how social workers who investigate childhood abuse and neglect can effect positive change.
This book addresses intersectionality and ideological, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized oppression and how it
affects the safety, permanence, and well-being of children. Through research and case examples, the reader will be im-
mersed in a historical perspective of oppression faced by black single mothers involved with social service systems, ex-
amine ways oppression plays out in child welfare supports and services, and discover new integrated methods of ad-
dressing oppression.
