14 . LITERATURE REVIEW Binturong was listed as a vulnerable species since 2008 and has been assessed recently on 2016 for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2016 . Their population kept declining and have been decreasing for decades since 1980.They are listed as Vulnerable due to the declining of their population that was estimated more than 30% over the last 18 years. The declining of this species is mostly due to human activities such as poaching, palm oil industries and illegal pet trade. They are usually common within their distribution range but recently they are becoming uncommon and rare. This species are more likely facing national extinction in some countries in Southeast Asia. In Malaysia the declining of Binturong is due to the product of deforestation and the conversion of many lowland habitats to oil palm plantations . - (John P. Rafferty, 2022) - (IUCN, 2016)
