Dear friends of the congregation,

On Nov. 10, 2020, we will celebrate 175 years since our founding. Throughout the year,
we will have several celebrations to mark this milestone in our history. As I reflect on
our rich history, I realize that our story continues in new ways, grounded in deep faith,
courageous spirit and action for justice. Our 2018-2019 Annual Report presents a snapshot
of how your inspirational giving keeps the flame of the IHM mission alive.

Deep Faith … Our foundation, which was laid 175 years ago, is grounded in the

deep faith of our co-founders, Theresa Maxis, IHM, and Louis Floret Gillet, CSsR. On a
cold November day in 1845, Theresa Maxis, Charlotte Schaaf and Theresa Renauld made
their professions of vows as the new congregation began. Throughout these years, deep
faith has guided us. Following the Second Vatican Council, we answered God’s call and
ventured out into various ministries. In addition to teaching at all levels, the IHM Sisters,
always attentive to the poor and the vulnerable, began serving the people of God as
parish ministers, social workers and in the areas of spirituality, jail ministry and so many
others. As we look to the future, despite being a smaller community, we will continue
to join with our associates and co-ministers, grounded in the Gospel message, to live
the IHM mission in new ways.

Courageous Spirit … Since our founding and throughout the years, courageous

spirit has been evident in the congregation. Embarking on the construction of
our Motherhouse during the Depression took a courageous spirit. The call to serve
throughout the continental United States, in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Honduras, Africa and
Mexico challenged us to move beyond our borders. As we served in various ministries,
we walked side by side with the people. We stood with the people in South Africa as
they faced apartheid.
In 2000, we embarked on the renovation of our Motherhouse, having made the decision
to do so in a sustainable manner. Implementing a gray water system, geothermal heating
and cooling and recycling many of the materials demonstrated care for Earth and
consideration for those who will come after us.

Action for Justice … Our IHM Constitutions challenge us “to eradicate the causes

of injustice and oppression and to help create structures that will promote justice and
peace and bring unity among all peoples.” (IHM Constitutions, Chapter 2) In 1987, we
made a particular commitment to the city of Detroit. We have continued to re-affirm
that commitment and to be attentive to the poor and the vulnerable present in various
ways within the city. Through our Justice, Peace and Sustainability Office, we respond
to political challenges with public statements that continue to be attentive to the poor
and the vulnerable and to address the injustices within our society.
Thanks to your inspirational giving, the IHM mission has been evident for 175 years.
We are rooted in our rich history, focused on the future and united in the fires ignited
by our founders 175 years ago.

IHM Sisters
Celebrate 50 years in Africa

In 1969, in response to a plea for secondary teachers who could help prepare sisters for entrance to university from the
general superior of the Bannabikira Sisters, Sister Margaret Brennan, then general superior of the IHM Sisters in Monroe,
sent the first IHM missionaries to Africa. At the time, IHM overseas missionaries were located only in Puerto Rico and Brazil.

The Legacy of
Marygrove College Continues

In 1927, Bishop Michael Gallagher invited the IHM congregation to move Marygrove College to Detroit where, as he

The IHM Sisters Raffle continues to be an integral part of our fundraising efforts,
raising $218,458 during the 2018-2019 season! Proceeds benefit the care of our
retired and infirm sisters. Drawings are held monthly between October–June.
Sisters and staff members gather on the third Wednesday of the month to draw
winning tickets.

On Dec. 20, 2018, in celebration and prayerful remembrance of the many tributes that were sent in from our friends
and benefactors, sisters and staff gathered in the foyer of the Motherhouse for the fifth annual blessing and lighting
of the Christmas Tribute Tree.
