After eating lunch outside, the Grade 6-11
students participated in multiple games such
as dogdeball, raquetball, and basketball using
the facilities at Tatara Campus. The activites
lasted until 3:30. This trip was a great
opportunity for students to use facilities that
are not available at the DISK campus. (Ellis)

The 2016-2017 PYP Exhibition was a huge success! Grade 5 students started by sharing some highlights about the planning

process and the amount of time they spent thinking and organising for the event. These were behind-the-scenes glimpses into

how much work actually goes into this massive project. Next, students delivered a memorable musical performance that wove

together their musical/artistic abilities and each students' real-world issue in a creative way. Then, student-teams

collaboratively shared their common interests and focus despite having different individual topics. Lastly, each student

showcased their research and findings by delivering a fact-based presentation to inform others of a problem that exists in the

world today and what action each took to be part of the solution. The room looked amazing and the feedback from everyone was

also the DISK flea market that
sold all kinds of very reasonably
priced things. This year's DISK
fair was excellent, let's hope that

Over the past six months Yusuke, Kay, and Miyu
reflected on their Personal Projects on

ManageBac using a process journal and created a
'product' for their project, which is the actual
physical representation of their work.

They also did a research report in which they
discussed the process, did further research on the
application and uses of their project, and wrote up
their findings in a scholarly fashion. The final part

of the Personal Project is a presentation.

Throughout the process, they were guided by their
supervisor, who tried to keep them on track with
deadlines and offered them advice. (Mr.Bailey)

DISK Money management students learnt about
investing, saving and borrowing money, Japan's
very low-interest rates, the dangers of inflation
and why people make personal budgets.
Ball hockey students practiced drills to learn
new skills, then played short games to put those
new skills to work.
In ceramic art, the young artists worked on two
very different pieces, a traditional Japanese tea
bowl and a unique creation conceptualised in
each artist's mind.

The 8th and 9th grade students took part in the kids section of the 'International
Kyotographie Competition', held in May. Photos were taken during art class and the
theme for the contest was 'Love'. Many wonderful photos were taken by our
students. Evan Arimitsu won an award for best photo in the 8th grade section and
Yumi Hirooka won overall best photo in the Middle and High school section! Well
done to the contestants and the winners! (Ms. March)

Experiential learning provides students with deeper insights and long-lasting learning. This year, elementary students 67
visited the National Museum of Modern Art, the Japan Mint, the National Museum of Ethnology, Kyoto Botanical Garden,
Kashihara City Museum of Insects, Kameoka Vertical Farm and the Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farm Houses. In
addition to the International learning trip to Fiji and the Model United Nations, secondary students also visited the
National Museum of Modern Art. (Ms. Loafmann)
