4 www.TheWindfall.net (530) 621-1698 Program Published by the WindfallThis year, El Dorado Disposal is the proud EVENT SPONSOR of the 82nd annual John M. Studebaker Wheelbarrow Races. We cannot thank El Dorado Disposal enough for helping support the KIDS of El Dorado County over many years. Placerville Kiwanis appreciates its continuing support.El Dorado Disposal is a local company whose employees live, work, and play in the communities it serves. Its mission is to help meet the needs of the communities it serves. The primary way in which it does this is by collecting and processing trash, recycling, yard waste, commercial waste, hazardous materials, and more in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner. But it does not stop there. El Dorado Disposal extends that mission by supporting organizations that improve the overall quality of life in these communities. El Dorado Disposal proudly supports local charities, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra, CASA, Hands4Hope, MORE, the Women’s Fund, and the Boys and Girls Club, to name just a few. In addition, it partners with local schools to help educate the younger generation and tomorrow’s leaders on the importance of sustainability. This past year, El Dorado Disposal helped with the Markham School Garden Project.El Dorado Disposal is committed to keeping our local communities safe and helping all residents properly dispose of trash as well provide opportunities to recycle and reuse material keeping it out of the landfills.Sustainability means balancing human demand with what the environment can provide both currently and in the future. The greater the demand, be it food, water, space, fuel, energy, air, wood, metal, etc., and the greater the rate of demand, less sustainable our lifestyles are. In order to balance out the supply with the demand, we need to replace, renew, or reinvent how we consume. In recent years, El Dorado Disposal has upgraded and remodeled the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), which is located in Placerville. The improvements allow it to process mixed recyclables from homes and businesses more quickly and efficiently. The public is invited to visit the MRF with your civic or church group, scout troop or 4-H club, or class. During your tour, you will learn what happens to your trash and recyclables after they are picked up. If you do not have time to tour the MRF, its staff would be happy to visit your classroom or group meeting to talk about recycling and all of our local programs. To schedule a tour or a presentation, call Customer Service at 530-626-4141.Placerville Kiwanis thanks El Dorado Disposal for its commitment to the youth of our communities.2026 John M. 6 www.TheWindfall.net (530) 621-1698 Program Published by the WindfallHistory of the John M. Studebaker Wheelbarrow Races You cannot retrace the history of the Wheelbarrow Races without a brief review of who John Mohler Studebaker was. He was a wagon maker from South Bend, Indiana. While his brothers wanted him to be their business partner, John had richer ideas -the gold fields of California! John’s opportunity came in 1853 when an emigrant wagon train was being formed in South Bend. John approached the leader with a proposition: “If I build a wagon, give it to the train, and drive it to California, will you provide me with three meals a day while we travel?” The answer was yes, and just ten days later John completed his wagon with the help of his brother, Clem, who ironed it. It was a rugged, sturdy vehicle, with extra-large wheels. If it could not cross the plains, mountains, and deserts, no other wagon could! On March 23, 1853, John M. Studebaker, at the age of 19, began the journey to California. Five long months later the wagons reached Old Hangtown! He arrived with only fifty cents in his pocket after being relieved of his savings along the way by some other type of “Gold Seekers” (card sharks) in a saloon. In the crowd that gathered upon their arrival, a man kept asking, “Is there a wagon maker among you?” The man was H.L. Hinds, the blacksmith in town, and he had a job for a man who wanted work. Many men pointed to John, and H.L. looked him over and offered John the job on the spot. John promptly declined, stating, “I came to dig gold,” so H.L. walked away. A man next to John spoke quietly to him, advising him to take the job, and take it quick. You will have plenty of time to look for gold, and remember, for every lucky gold strike, there are hundreds of those disappointed! This advice was most likely the beginning of the formation of the Studebaker corporation.John thought for a moment and then took after H.L. to accept the job, starting the next day. His work consisted of repairing picks, shovels, pans, general blacksmithing, and stagecoach repairs, but the biggest need was building wheelbarrows. It was not long after that his superb wheelbarrow building earned him the name of Wheelbarrow Johnny! John would go on to be a member of the Studebaker Corporation, known for wheelbarrows, wagons, and automobiles. John M. Studebaker also was a member of “E Clampus Vitus” (the Clampers). In 1939, the first John M. Studebaker Wheelbarrow Race was held to honor Wheelbarrow Johnny. The race was organized and promoted by none other than, “E Clampus Vitus.” Throughout the early years, the races consisted of a sprint race, an endurance race and usually a costume race of some sort. The sprint race was a measured dash, pushing the wheelbarrow (50 to 100 yards in length) to an ore pile, fill the sack by shovel and push the wheelbarrow with the required weight and dash back across the starting line. The endurance race was like today’s race with musclemen pushing, hoisting, and sweating their way over the obstacle course. It was rare for a racer to enter both races, but some did and won them both. The Championship Title was for the endurance race. The race was halted along with the fair during World War II but came roaring back in 1948. In 1956, the Kiwanis Club of Placerville was chartered and took over the running of the races. This will be their 64th year in doing so. The Women’s Championship race began in 1957, Teenage Boys in 1959, Teenage Girls, Junior Boys and Girls in 1967, Most Inspirational Award 1979, High School Challenge in 1990, 911 Challenge 1992, and Senior Race 2010. The course has changed some over the years. Obstacles come and go, but ruggedness and challenge remain right up there for one of the toughest endurance tests ever. Shovels have been replaced by gold pans, and the excursion through the water pit at the end of the course is not for the faint of heart. Wheelbarrows are old style with iron wheels, heavy by themselves, but then add the 50 plus pounds of ore and 20 competitors... and the struggle is on.In reviewing the list of winners over the years, some very athletic individuals have claimed the top spots. Chet Carsten was an 8-time Men’s Champion and was topped by Brian Veerkamp in 2014 with his 9th win. Judy Mosbacher/Pickett and Makenzie Snyder have dominated many years of the Women’s race. The biggest winner of all, though, is our community. This annual event is the Kiwanis Club of Placerville’s largest fundraiser with the proceeds being distributed throughout the community, primarily to children and youth programs. Good luck and congratulations on this 79th year of history making! Go Kiwanis! The Studebaker brothers- founders of what would become the Studebaker Corporation. 10 www.TheWindfall.net (530) 621-1698 Program Published by the WindfallPlacerville Kiwanis and its Service Leadership Programs support the Kiwanis Family House. The Kiwanis Family House (KFH) is a crown jewel of Kiwanis and just happens to be in our backyard. It was created 42 years ago, and one of the original supporters was from Placerville Kiwanis. The KFH is located in Sacramento and helps create a healing and supportive community around families impacted by medical emergencies. The KFH provides temporary housing and support to families of seriously ill or injured children and adults being treated at University of California Davis Medical Center and Shriners’ Hospital. Paula Kelley is the Executive Director of the House. The KFH has served more than 42,000 guests from all 50 states and 21 foreign countries. The average stay for a guest family is 3-4 days, but many families stay longer as they, or their loved one, receive treatment. In fact, the longest stay at the KFH in 2021 was 242 days by a single family. Over the years, more than 200 families from El Dorado County have been guests at the KFH. One of those was Denise Proctor, a resident of Diamond Springs, and mother of two. Denise had some vision issues and her optometrist recommended she get some testing at UCD Medical Center. She was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer, and the specialists immediately recommended a course of treatment that started with brain surgery. They removed as much of the tumor as possible and considered the surgery a success. Denise then had to undergo a sixweek course of targeted radiation therapy and have a “brain drain” on a weekly basis. Since she could no longer drive, Denise could not easily get to and from home to UCDMC for treatment. As a result, she was able to stay at the Kiwanis Family House for her treatment. Denise said that KFH was “a true blessing for me and my family. I met so many sweet people during my stay. I cannot imagine what my life would be like if Kiwanis Family House were not here.”Another example was a young family from El Dorado County who came to stay at KFH as a result of a grant from the El Dorado Community Foundation. It truly takes the whole community to support those at KFH. Their stay was only 10 days, while mom underwent her first round of radiation treatment for breast cancer. Every day, the staff at the KFH saw just how much it made a difference in their lives for that brief period of time. When they arrived the Executive Director of KFH, Paula Kelley, was able to spend some time with their young son while mom and dad checked in. He said only 3 things: “My name is Jonathan, I love pretzels, I don’t want my mom to die.” We might not ever know the outcome that this medical journey has for this family, but we know that for 10 days, Jonathan had pretzels and hugged his mom whenever he could. It is moments like these that make KFH truly OUR home for healing families. For more information, please go to http://www.kiwanis familyhouse.orgKiwanis Family HouseExecutive Director, Paula Kelley

The front part housed a blacksmith shop operated by Ollis and Hinds, and John Mohler Studebaker rented a part of the rear. Here he had a bench and sort of woodworking shop where he repaired and worked on wagon wheels and the like. A little later he began to make wheelbarrows for the miners’ use. He became engaged in the making of ammunition wagons for the Union Army - from that grew his extensive wagon and carriage business and, eventually, the automobile business.Citation from California Office of Historic Preservation California Historical Landmark 142Studebaker’s Shop Site543 Main Street, Placerville
