Wine tasting etiquette

~ By Doug Noble, Food Writer and Historian for The Windfall

A few years ago a group of wineries were asked for a list of things visitors to a winery should or shouldn’t
do when out enjoying a wine tasting. Nearly all of them came up with the same list. It is short
and it is really common sense. Most of all, enjoy your visit to the wineries and

The Perfect Weekend in El Dorado County –
With Wine Pairings!

~ By Mike Owen, Founder and El Jefe at Crystal Basin Cellars, crystalbasin.com
When the walls close in on your cubicle and your productivity plummets because
you REALLY need to get away for a weekend, ponder on this list of amazing and
fun things to do over a weekend in Western El Dorado County. We’re adding wine
pairings for an added dimension to all full visualization of the experience. It’s a virtual
vacation! Ready? Here goes!

Day 1

Get Amped! Grab some zingy espresso at Totem Coffee in the Courtyard of Placerville’s
Cary House Hotel. Pairs best with the mocha and coffee elements of Merlot.
Go Subterranean! Tour the Gold Bug Mine in Placerville for an authentic picture
of what it took to literally beat and blast nuggets and flakes of gold out of the ground.
Pairs best with an earthy Malbec.
Eat With Your Eyes! Visit the Placerville Farmers’ Market for a sensual riot of fresh
farm-grown veggies and other locally crafted items Saturdays 8 to Noon. An excellent
pairing with a bright Sangiovese.
Taste the Juice! Savor a wide range of award-winning wines and take the barrel room
tour at Crystal Basin Cellars in Camino. The perfect pairing for this stop is their smooth
Gold Medal winning Zinfandel that is grown across the street from the winery.
Take a Hike! At Sly Park Lake, it’s a mostly flat 1 mile hike from Hazel Creek
Meadow to the beautiful Park Creek Falls. The suggested pairing for this gorgeous
natural setting is a Grenache bursting with strawberry fruit.
Time to Boogie! Grab those dancing shoes and get ready to shake your tail feathers
in Coloma. You can party hop between great music options at Marco’s Café and the
Coloma Club. Pairs best with a Big Bold Cabernet Sauvignon.
Hit the Pillow! You might want to throw a bit of sack time in here to recover from
your amazing day. The lovely New World Port from Madrona Vineyards would be
a nice sip before bedtime.

Day 2

Rise and Shine! Brunch on the patio at the Independent in Placerville will kick start
your day – be sure to quaff a mimosa or two in order to get your daily ration of Bubbly.
Get Wet! Take an adrenaline-filled guided raft trip with Adventure Connections on the
Middle Fork of the American River. Bring sunscreen and enjoy the amazing American
River Canyon with a rugged and rustic Barbera.
Get All Historical! Tour the Gold Discovery state park in Coloma. See and touch what
started the Westward Expansion on our continent. A fun effort accompanied with a
thoughtful and pensive Syrah.
Get On the Train! Enjoy a 90 minute ride on the El Dorado Western Railroad featuring
small rolling stock maintained and operated by train buffs. Rides between 11am and
2:30pm on Sundays. A great match with a dense Petite Sirah.
Time for a Cocktail! Grab a Golden Cadillac at Poor Reds in El Dorado. These folks
consume the most Galliano in the world each year. This stop pairs with a cool and
lemony Chardonnay.

Finding dependable advice on wine

Buying wine at a grocery store or even a neighborhood wine shop can be points, such as varietal character, balance, food compatibility, typicality, and

Besides mediocre storage and the generally poor selection, we usually have Usually, a major wine competition with qualified judges results in gold med-

suggest something to go with your mac ’n’ cheese. wines that fall just short of that more exalted rank, but which can represent an
extraordinary value.
Queries usually are answered with a shrug. At one grocery chain location re-
cently, a woman asked about a particular white wine that was on sale. The “wine There are occasions when expensive wines get “only” a silver medal, but
guy” said he didn’t know much about it, but “we haven’t had any complaints.” these can be simply wines that are in transition, waiting for a bit of time in the
bottle to develop secondary characteristics.
Nice recommendations

Another way to get a wine recommendation is to frequent only those wine toward getting a good bottle of wine at a fair price.
shops that have knowledgeable sales people. But some communities are so
limited in stores that qualify, and some stores try to up-sell buyers. And some Dan Berger publishes

ent wines. For instance, it’s nice to find out that a Chinon is a red wine from the
Loire Valley made from Cabernet Franc. But unless your local store carries one, ad
such information is only academically interesting.

Reading the scores of wine magazines or newsletters also can be somewhat
helpful, but scores for wines that typically sell for less than $15 are generally
moderate, which is not helpful. (Want a zinfandel that gets a score of 84?)

Moreover, no magazine I know of tells you specifically how such scores
were arrived at. Are scores a result of a wild guess after one sniff and one sip,
with knowledge of the wine’s price? Or was the evaluation double-blind?

So where to turn for sage wine advice?

Since 1982, when I founded an international wine competition, I have grown
increasingly supportive of such events as a guide for both wineries and consum-
ers. Each group can learn important facts for making and buying better wines.

Wineries can learn how a series of judges view their wines in a setting where
they are not affected by the price of the product or how much gold is sprayed
on the label. And they can learn where they fit in relation to other wineries that
make the same varieties.

And consumers can get a frame of reference on the best wines by seeing how
professionals view wines about which they know only the aroma and taste.

Since competition wine judges are not affected by knowing various brands,
they can approach each wine as objectively as possible. And although wine
judges do have their prejudices, the fact is that in most competitions, three or
more judges sit on a panel and discuss each medal candidate from various stand-
