Believers worship together at an
Alliance church in Libreville, Gabon.

All over the world, Alliance believers are celebrating Jesus. He is the
image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation. Through Him all
things were made, and in Him is life—life that is the light of all mankind.
To all who believe in Him, He gives the right to become children of God.

life, and have it to the full.”

—Jesus, in John 10:10

Jesus came to earth in the flesh to restore the
relationship with humankind that was severed
when sin invaded the world. His message of
unfailing love releases people from the bondage
of sin, the curse of oppression, and the sting of
death—providing hope and a future for all who
call on His name.

2

What does this mean for us? More than we can
possibly fathom. It means we no longer bear
the penalty of our sinful nature. It means that
we are presented pure and blameless before
our Creator. It means that all of our needs have
been “pre-supplied.” It means that we no longer
walk through this life alone. It means that a
heavenly home awaits us. All because of Jesus.
What can we possibly do in response to His
divine outpouring of love?

For there is one God and one mediator between
God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who
gave himself as a ransom for all men . . .
—1 Timothy 2:5–6

OUR PASSION 3
FOR HIM

For Christ’s love compels us, because we are
convinced that one died for all, and . . . that those
who live should no longer live for themselves but
for him who died for them and was raised again.

—2 Corinthians 5:14–15

Because of who Jesus is and what He’s done
for us, we seek to live our lives in unreserved
devotion to Him. And this devotion compels us
to tell others about His great love and mercy for
all mankind.

The heartbeat of The Alliance is to know
and exalt Jesus as Savior, Sanctifier, Healer,
and Coming King and complete His Great
Commission:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the

Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I
have commanded you. And surely I am with

you always, to the very end of the age.”

—Jesus, in Matthew 28:19–20

OUR PRIVILEGE TO SERVE

It’s a glorious and humbling thought that the God of the universe While great progress has been made, the Great Commission remains

Political systems and military force have offered little prospect

NIMBLE AND RESPONSIVE

Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy. A massive tsunami in Asia. Widespread flooding in Russia.
A triple disaster in Japan. Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The Syrian refugee crisis.

In these devastating events, Alliance people were there. Right away. And they didn’t just
show up to drop off bandages and water bottles. They brought news of a loving Savior
who walks with them through life’s crises and offers lasting hope and a future.

IN FOR THE LONG HAUL

God has placed Alliance workers, churches, and laypeople in strategic places throughout

the world to be His “first responders” to the immense spiritual, emotional, and physical

14 needs of lost and hurting people. But we don’t just blow through town and move on to the
next “opportunity.” We unpack, set up camp, roll up our sleeves, and labor side-by-side

with those who are struggling to rebuild their lives.

A conversation between a Hurricane Katrina victim and an Alliance pastor who started the
Camp Katrina/Christian Life Center in Waveland, Mississippi:

“Knowing that you are here gives us strength, and we just don’t
want you to leave.”

“We are not leaving. You can count on us until you are back
in your homes.”

“What organization is funding you to do this?”

“God is funding it. Every day it comes in, from all over the
United States and Canada.”

York City immediately after Hurricane Sandy.

LOAVES AND FISHES

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with
five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

. . . Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who
were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces
that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” So they gathered them and filled twelve
baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.”

—John 6:8–13

Most of the chapters in the Alliance story have small beginnings. As the Holy Spirit moved on him, Simpson began assembling

Simpson’s ministry to New York’s immigrants ignited in him a

deep concern for the unreached masses throughout the world.

A. B. Simpson (center) speaks at an annual camp meeting in Old Orchard, Maine, in 1909. At a similar
camp meeting in 1884, the movement that grew into The Alliance was birthed in his heart.

“We have the privilege of Dr. David Thompson oversees a surgery at Bongolo

in Gabon, West Africa. These
successful evangelistic efforts

have resulted in multiple
church plants.

As others were sent to the Congo in the years that followed, one
discouraged missionary said to his companions, “Perhaps we shouldn’t
expect the same results here in Africa as are being seen in India and
China.” A junior missionary stood and replied, “Brother, I refuse to
believe that the Spirit of God can do less in the heart of an African than
in an Indian or Chinese.” That statement fanned the waning faith of
his fellow missionaries. They returned to their stations with renewed
courage, faith, and determination. It wasn’t long before God turned the
tide. A surge from heaven brought life to the dry, parched ground. From
then on, the Church took root and germinated.

Today, more than

2 million
Alliance Christians
worship Jesus in sub-

Saharan Africa.

Robert Page, one of the first missionaries to Africa through the
International Missionary Alliance (forerunner to the C&MA), went to the
Congo in 1892. He took charge of several orphaned boys and worked

in the Alliance school in addition to visiting more than 100 villages.

As his concern for the lost multitudes of the world deepened, Simpson was once R. A. Jaffray (right)
seen hugging a globe to his chest, placing his fingertips on Vietnam, Cambodia,
and Laos (then French IndoChina). With tears streaming down his cheeks and
across his fingers, he cried out to God for the lost people of those lands.

God answered that prayer through another small beginning. In the spring of
1911, Robert A. Jaffray, a newspaper publisher turned missions pioneer, led two
new missionaries to what is now the largest port city of central Vietnam. On
Armistice Day 1918, more new recruits brought the missionary staff to nine. The
number doubled by the end of 1921 and tripled in 1927.

Despite the perils of war and much opposition to the preaching of the gospel
in this troubled land, the gospel flourished.

Through Alliance ministries, Vietnamese students learn about Jesus
early in life. Education and leadership development are foundational
to the development of strong, light-bearing churches. Today’s Institute
of Bible and Theology in Ho Chi Minh City continues this legacy by
training next-generation leaders for the growing national church.

Vietnamese immigrants have poured into Cambodia during various political

upheavals over the last two decades. Since Alliance workers established NewHope
Ministries in 1998, hundreds of children have been educated, eight churches have

been planted, and more than 1,500 Vietnamese have come to faith in Christ.

Our world is broken. Political structures can’t repair it. Military forces can’t rebuild
it. And all the world’s riches cannot secure peace on earth and goodwill to men.
Jesus Christ is the only hope for humankind. And we are His chosen agents of
healing, reconciliation, and restoration.

But our mission is a risky one. The costs are high. Most of the remaining unreached
parts of the world are hostile to Christ followers. When Alliance workers step into
these areas, they know that, like many of their early pioneering predecessors, they
may not return. Is it worth the risk? Is it worth the cost?

Jesus told His disciples three parables about lost things: a sheep, a coin, and a son.
In each case, what was lost was precious—and well worth the time, toil, and peril
to retrieve it. Whenever what had been lost was found, a great celebration ensued.

Today, The Alliance has workers in some of the last unevangelized corners
of our planet—where risks are high and access to the good news is low. In
many of these countries, less than 1 percent of the population has heard a
clear presentation of the gospel message. Through the work of the Holy
Spirit and the coming together of God’s people, countries shrouded in
spiritual darkness are being illuminated by the light of Jesus.
The Alliance is a faith denomination—relying entirely on the prayers and
generosity of God’s people to help complete the Great Commission.

DEAR FRIENDS,

Has your heart been stirred as you’ve read these pages? Mine has.
Amazing! We’re true participants with the Christ who remains
passionate for His world.

The Alliance is a historic, world-impacting, God-called ministry. The
command of Jesus that love be supreme is being beautifully expressed
among us. The commission of Jesus to go into all the world—discipling,
baptizing, teaching—is being powerfully lived out. And we’re just
beginning. We believe that at this moment in human history, God is
breathing new winds of His Spirit in and through The Alliance.

I was a teenager when I began investing a portion of my prayers, tithes,
and offerings in the work of The Alliance. Through the years this has
been my increasing pleasure and practice as I’ve witnessed God move
among us.

Please receive this as my invitation to join me in being a participant in
what God is doing through The Alliance. Thank you for allowing your
heart’s passions to be aligned with His. Your prayers, advocacy, and
financial contributions are tools God uses to forward this movement.

Encouraged,

John Stumbo
