Launceston.

Mrs M E Abbott purchased the factory of Rodgers’s Aerated Water and Cordial Factory, renaming it the
Phoenix Aerated Waters and Cordials Factory. W H Abbott was also listed at various times as proprietor and
later H C Abbott as Manager of Abbotts Ltd.

A Ballantyne, Penguin, Bendigo made. RARITY “R”
BALLANTYNE, Andrew (1903-1911) Penguin.

Ballantyne purchased a shop and dwelling situated on the main road in Penguin in July 1903. Shortly after,
Ballantyne is listed as a Storekeeper and Baker. It is uncertain when Ballantyne commenced manufacturing soft
drinks; however, Ballantyne’s Cordial factory was advertised for sale in April 1911.

BLOCKLEY, Arthur (1920’s-1936) 333 Wellington Road, Launceston.

Arthur Blockley emigrated from England in November 1921; by the mid-1920’s he is listed as a cordial maker
until the 1930’s where Blockley is listed as a Storekeeper operating from the same address.

CASCADE BREWERY / CASCADE BREWERY CO LTD (1886-present) Hobart.

The Cascade Brewery was established in 1824 brewing beer, ales, etc. In 1886, the brewery expanded to
produce aerated waters, ginger beers, cordials etc. It became a Limited Company in 1893.
The soft drink line of the business is continued today under Cascade Drinks.
Two versions, one Bendigo made the other Bourne Denby made.

Mrs Cowap was operating a cordial factory during 1891 which continued until ~1911.

Cooee Cordials, Bendigo made.

Made in 1983 for the Centenary of Cooee Cordials.

CRYSTAL AERATED WATER COMPANY (1897-1920) Esplanade West, Launceston.

Established in December 1897 by Edwin Waller, who had previous experience in aerated water manufacturing
in Edinburgh, Scotland [Wm. Leitch & Co.]. The factory later established branches in Scottsdale and Derby –
the operations were sold to Abbotts.

DAVIS, Thomas (1897-1921) Burnie.

Arrived in Burnie ~1886 where he originally worked as Manager for Henry Black’s Cordial Factory, later
Captain Jones’ Factory before commencing business in his own right.

DEVONPORT CORDIAL COMPANY (1905-21)

Operated by Garnet James Pearce who moved to Devonport from Burnie in 1903; shortly after he established his
cordial factory. During the 1920’s-30’s, Pearce was the proprietor of several hotels in the district, including the
Palace Hotel, Rooke Street, Devonport.

Milsom purchased the factory of W I Thrower in April 1893.

PANTON, E. (1869-1902) Enfield Hotel, Charles Street, Launceston.

The Panton family were connected with the Enfield Hotel over a period of time – it is uncertain which of the E.
Pantons used the Ginger Beer; E. J Panton, Elijah Edward, Elizabeth Jane (1885) and then Edward Henry (1888)
were proprietors during the thirty-three years.

SUCKLING, S. (1883-1910) Sandhill Cordial Factory, Howick Street.

Suckling previously worked for C S Button, Launceston. In November 1883, Suckling has advertised that he has
opened a ginger beer manufactory and was able to supply Hop Beer, Gingerade, Cordials, Raspberry Vinegar,
etc. Suckling operated from several addresses over a period of 17 years.

TETLOW, Henry (1914-30) 63 Brisbane Street, Launceston.

Tetlow previously worked for Abbott’s before establishing his own cordial factory.

THROWER, W. I. (1887-1893) George Street, Launceston.

Originally operated as a Draper, Thrower sold the shop and fittings to concentrate on other interests including
the proprietor of the Court House Hotel (1873), Launceston; Ship Hotel (1876), Emu Bay and International
Hotel (1881), Launceston. During the 1870-80’s period, Thrower was also listed as a Real Estate Agent,
Sharebroker and an agent for the Tasmanian News as well as being involved in a range of civic duties.
By May 1887, Thrower is operating a cordial factory at Cameron Street, Launceston. The factory was later sold
to G P Milsom in April 1893.

Weaver & Co originally commenced as Chemists & Druggists before expanding into aerated water manufacture.
