Introduction

Like many larger centres across Australia, Brisbane has had its fair share of chemists over the years, ranging
from smaller family concerns to larger impersonal wholesalers who acquired the business interests and
tradenames of smaller businesses.

Some of the pioneer villages have recreated the atmosphere of the early chemists with their array of
lotions, potions, cures, and pills guaranteed to remedy a host of ailments and illnesses. One unique venue is
the Childers Pharmaceutical Museum, which is preserved as an original turn-of-the-century chemist.

Shopfront windows displayed colourful apothecary jars with ornate gilt label written in mystique Latin. Out
the back of the chemist shop, away from prying eyes would be a dentist’s chair – another service from your
friendly chemist.

On the counter, a familiar mortar and pestle to remind you that the chemist often produced their own
patent medicines of various shapes, colours and sizes. It seemed that no matter the cause of ill-health, the
chemist had a pill, ointment or elixir to get you back on your feet again.

Many chemists also produced their own soda water or lemonade as well as bottling tonics, bitters and
other health-related products. Homeopathic chemists were also popular in the late nineteenth century and
met the demand for herbal or natural-based medicines.

In Brisbane, the first chemists of Moreton Bay settlement dotted the main streets of Queen, Adelaide and
George Streets; while South of the river chemists later set up business at South Brisbane. Not much is
known of these early pharmacists.

In 1864 a fire engulfed the commercial centre of Brisbane, destroying the most valuable block of real estate
in the fledgling state of Queensland. Some chemists were able to rebuild and resume their trade, while
others moved elsewhere or changed occupations.

Into the 1880’s, a strong pharmaceutical industry evolved under the guiding hands of prominent chemists
such as Messrs Edward Taylor, Charles Yeo, Thomas Thomason and Elliott Brothers. This group were the
driving force behind the Pharmacy Board of Queensland appointed by the Governor on the 14 May 1885.

By the 1890’s, amalgamations were becoming a regular occurrence as the larger chemists took control,
forcing many smaller chemists and druggists to close down. As the new century was welcomed, Elliott Bros
Ltd and Taylor and College had a monopoly on Brisbane’s and indeed Queensland’s pharmaceutical services
and supplies. These two conglomerates had established branches in provincial centres, particularly along
the coast in Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns.

In addition, to manufacturing their own products, the larger companies also distributed wholesale
medicines from overseas as well as the larger interstate chemists including Row & Co, Bickfords and
Fauldings.

Many of Brisbane’s suburbs had their own local chemist or druggist who established a strong family
following based on goodwill and friendly service. Some of these chemists still exist today with strong links
back to their early history.

The smaller local chemists often found it difficult to compete and often had to resort to being distributors
or agents for the larger manufacturing/wholesale chemists. The turn of the century also saw the creation of
Friendly Societies as means of combining resources and efforts for the benefits of their members. Other

chemists managed to survive and prosper despite the intense trading competition from the larger drug
houses.
Some such as the Soul Pattison group can be traced back to the early Sydney companies of Washington H
Soul and Lewy Pattinson – both chemists operating into the late nineteenth century and continued on by
family members through to the twentieth century.
Pharmaceutical traditions are still present today: in Rockhampton, Symons Carbolic Ointment (for Barcoo
Rot) is still manufactured according to the original recipe and can be obtained from the original pharmacy
trading as E N Symons. Similarly, signs of Brisbane pharmaceutical history are still visible – the original
Thomason’s Building stands at the Woolloongabba Fiveways; J P Davies store still operates at Boundary
Street, West End; and the Drysdale’s Chemists Pty Ltd conducts business as usual in Queen Street.
This is only a thumbnail sketch of the history of chemists in Brisbane and creates a fascinating picture of the
times, as well as providing a background to the history of Brisbane’s pharmacies and chemists.
These times not only give an insight into the social history of Brisbane but provide collectors with a fonder
appreciation for the bottle, jars and other chemist containers we collect.

Listings

Chemists have been listed alphabetically with known addresses given as well as years of operation. Records
such as Trades Directories, Postal Directories and Electoral Rolls have been utilised to compile this
information. Details prior to 1875 is somewhat sketchy with information pre-1859 virtually non-existent
with newspaper advertisements often the only formal record of early chemists.

After the 1930s with the advent of phone directories, the trade almanacs and gazetteers ceased publication
– this period also saw the production of mass machine-made bottles; a field which is gaining momentum in
terms of collectability.

Consequently, listings after ~1935 may have ‘+’ added to indicate the chemist continued to operate; I have
noted some later chemists and their years of operation in response to queries on the Forum; essentially the
listings cover the period 1850-1930’s.

Terminology

The following terms have been used throughout the listings to identify and describe the bottles, jars and
other containers used by the recorded chemists. Naturally, there will be some missing pieces as new
bottles or variations in size, colour etc. come to light.

Colours

The following colours have been used to describe/identify bottles and containers:

 Amber – may be found in light, dark, olive or honey amber colours
 Amethyst – sun-coloured examples found in range of hues
 Aqua – light and dark shades; bluish-aqua or greenish-aqua
 Clear glass
 Cobalt blue – refers to darker blue coloured examples
 Green – light and dark shades

Types/Styles of Bottles

 Oval-based
 Rectangular-based
 Square-based
 Bevelled-edged
 Round-shouldered
 Square-shouldered
 Hatching – raised design mainly used for poisons
 Machine-made – generally referring to later style medicines made 1930s+
 Modern machine-made/screw top - generally referring to later style medicines made 1945+

It should be noted that due to the danger of accidental poisoning, some chemist items had elaborate
designs to avoid such mishaps. Shapes and colours were often used – this was more of a necessity at night
in the days with no electricity and reaching for the wrong bottle at night could be fatal. Hence, glass bottle
manufacturers used distinct designs on containers. In addition to prominent embossing of “Poison” or “Not
to be taken”, many used the concept of raised or distinctive embossing such as ‘hatching’ or other raised
patterns.

One uniquely Australian design was the “Barb Wire Patent” which featured raised embossing similar to a
barb wire pattern. Other innovations included wonderful shapes such as skulls or coffins, widely used in the
United Kingdom; unfortunately for collectors Brisbane chemists did not use such bottles. Nevertheless,
there are some spectacular and rare bottles/containers to be found as a reminder of Brisbane’s
pharmaceutical history.

KENT, THOMAS / KENT & DREW (1853-57)
One of Brisbane's earliest chemist and aerated water manufacturers. The Moreton Bay Courier noted that
in mid 1853 Thomas Kent, a South Brisbane chemist, opened a soda water and lemonade factory on the
corner of Russell and Grey Streets. He was also listed as a Grocer. A couple of months after opening he
bought up the plant from the defunct Fisher & Gregory factory. Kent also opened up in Ipswich, and took
over the lease of the Woolpack Inn. It is also possibly that this bottle/firm is connected to William Kent who
operated a Soda Water & Lemonade Manufactory in Ipswich in 1854.
By 1855, the factory was advertised as Kent & Drew, Queen Street North Brisbane when he took his
assistant T C Drew on as a partner.

TAYLOR, Edward (1870-1929) 193 Queen Street, then Charlotte Street. Also established a London Branch.
One of the founders of the Queensland Pharmaceutical Industry, Edward or ‘Pa’ Taylor as he was
affectionately referred to, had a profound and long lasting impact on the shape of the chemist and druggist
scene in Brisbane.
Edward Taylor was born in 1838 in London, where he served his apprenticeship to a leading pharmaceutical
chemist. Upon qualifying, Taylor emigrated to New Zealand, before settling in Ipswich, Queensland where
he purchased the pharmacy of the late Charles Warry.
Taylor moved to Brisbane in 1870 and later entered into a partnership with James Berkley to create
Berkley-Taylor & Co. Following the death of Berkley, he continued the business with Evan Prosser (forming
Prosser, Taylor & Co.) – this later evolved into Taylor & College Ltd in 1900.
In 1901, they acquired the business of Thomason-Chater Ltd, before forming an amalgamation with their
main competition Elliott Brothers to create Taylors & Elliott’s Ltd with branches established in Townsville
and Rockhampton. In 1930 Taylors and Elliott’s along with Felton, Grimwade were part of a group that
established Drug Houses Australia.
Taylor retired in 1929, handing the directorship of the firm to his son Willis Taylor, thus ending 70 years of
valuable service to the wholesale chemist and druggist trade in Queensland. Edward ‘Pa’ Taylor died the
following year at the age of 92 leaving a widow aged 94 and a family of 5 – two sons and three daughters.
Taylor left behind a rich legacy including the establishment of a Chair of Chemistry at the University of
Queensland.
Taylor used a diverse range of containers in connection with the different companies he was associated
with in Brisbane:
