on dogs.
Your dog is a member of your family – your best friend
– and what a DNA test says isn’t going to change
that, but consider what happens in a humane society,
shelter, or rescue group. When staff and volunteers
are assigning breeds - and breed traits - subjectively
based on visual identification of a dog, and not based
on science- it’s quite possible they are just speculating.
That practice can lead to poor matches for adopters
who rely on that speculation as a prediction of a dogs
energy levels, temperament, even personality.
This is particularly problematic in regard to pit bulls.
One study revealed that only half of shelter dogs
labeled as “pit bulls” actually belonged to one of the
breeds commonly referred to as pit bulls. [“Pit bull”
is not a breed, but a term commonly used to refer to
the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire
Terrier, American Bully, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and
often the American Bulldog.]
Obviously, most shelters and rescue groups can’t
afford to DNA-test all their dogs, so many are doing
away with breed labels in favor or more accurate,
extensive personality profiles. So the next time you
visit a local shelter or inquire about a dog in a rescue
group, they may tell you, quite honestly, they don’t
know what the breed or breed mix the dog is. Coconino
Humane Association, Verde Valley Humane Society,
and the Humane Society of Sedona are all moving
away from using breeds to identify dogs and focusing
more on a dog’s individual personalities, quirks, and
sociability with other dogs to make that perfect match.

Denali’s Retired Alaskan Huskies: Bred to Sled
