Manuscript of Kalpasutra
FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
Dear Readers,
Jai Jinendra!!
On the front cover, you can see the image of Kalpasutra a Jain text, written in
Prakrit language, significant literature on Jainism is written in Prakrit. The term
Prakrit refers to a range of languages rather than a specific language. New or
modern Indo-Aryan languages include Marathi (in all variations), Bengali, Odia,
Assamese, Bihari, Hindi (in all varieties), Gujarati, Rajasthani, Marwadi, Punjabi,
etc. All of these regional languages descended from their own Prakrit variants
(officially known as Apabhramsha) rather than directly from Sanskrit.

Online course on Prakrit
India is considered the land of a number of language families, and
Indo-Aryan is one of them. The linguists have subdivided the Indo-
Aryan Languages into three categories: Old, Middle, and New Indo-
Aryan languages. The Middle Indo-Aryan group is characterized by
languages such as Prakrit, Pali, and Apabhramsa. Dialects of Prakrit
were used to produce literature, inscriptions, and plays. The study of
this literature, inscriptions, and plays is very important to know
ancient Indian history and culture. Keeping this fact in mind, ISJS
organizes an extensive offline nine-month Prakrit study program and
a third program is going on. Now, at the request of some scholars
from India and abroad, ISJS offers a one-month online course
on “Fundamentals of Prakrit Language” from 8th November
2022 till 7th December 2022. Last date of registration is
October 15, 2022.

Emerging Scholars in Jain Studies – Lecture by Adrian Plau
Department of Religious studies at UC Davis and UC Riverside
have co-organized the “Emerging Scholars in Jain Studies”
virtual series. Under this series, the lecture will by delivered by Dr.
Adrian Plau (Wellcome Collection) on Friday, September 30, 2022,
9:00am -10:30 am (PDT) and 9:30 pm -11:00 pm (IST).
In this talk, Dr. Plau will reflect on two themes that have interlinked
throughout his career and now are central to his work: collections and
communities. Drawing a line from his Ph.D. project, which focused on
manuscripts accessed in Jain temple libraries across North India, to his
present role in the gallery, library, archive, and museum (GLAM) sector
where he is part of the management and cataloging of Wellcome
Collection’s manuscript collections, he will situate these themes in his
ongoing Headley Fellowship with the Art Fund, which seeks to develop
a model for manuscript repatriation driven by collections information
