The cover page showing ten righteous virtues of pure soul comprising
Daslakshan Parva. This festival is celebrated by Digambar Jains every year for
self-purification for ten days. The Digambara Jains recite daily one chapter of
the ten chapters of the sacred Jain text, Tattvartha Sutra on ten days of
fasting. Daslakshan Parva is an eternal festival and follows eight days of
Shwetambar Jain Paryushan Parva.

3 Bhagwan Mahavira Prakrit Fellowship is going to start from September 01,
2022, for more details look inside.

"The Rhythm of Life," a holistic experiential retreat from November 11 to 13, is
scheduled to assist people to grasp the essence of happiness and discover skills
to help them navigate life. Details within.

which he gives a short brief on Jainism and Environment Conservation.

A lecture on “The importance of Prakrit in Literature and Religion” is scheduled

5 Jain Studies Winter Program

International School of Jain Studies (ISJS) is back with the 5 Jain
Studies Winter program. ISJS has conducted 15 Summer schools.
In December 2018, ISJS offered its first Winter program in
Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. This year, the program aims to focus on
the Jain way of thinking and living.

Program Dates: Dec 28, 2022 - January 6, 2023.

Bhagwan Mahavir Prakrit Fellowship

The 3 Bhagwan Mahavira Fellowship by ISJS for nine months.
Following three candidates will begin their classes from
September 01, 2022 at Pune, India.

• Dr. Shivani Bothra from Jaipur, Rajasthan
• Dr. Alka Jain from Jaipur, Rajasthan
• Mr. Anubhav Jain from Khaniyadhana, Madhya Pradesh

The fellowship provides full boarding, lodging, monthly stipend (for
personal expenses), tuition, course material and travel within India in
connection with the program. The program begins from September 01,
2022 at Pune, India and will end on May 31, 2023.

In this issue, we have an article title “Jainism and Environment
Conservation”: by Mr. Nilang Soni

The five main components of nature, Prithvi (earth, soil, stones, etc.),
Jal (Water resources including cloud), Agni (Fire), Vayu (Air), and
Aakash (Sky), are shown in a very distinctive fashion in Jain Agams
because they are living creatures and must be treated as such. These
five sorts of materials combine to generate five classes of organisms,
including vegetation, trees and plants, fungi, and animals. To read

HOMAGE

ISJS is deeply pained to learn of
Dr. Mahendra Kumar Pandya’s demise
on August 17, 2022. Dr. Pandya was truly
a shining jewel, a pillar and a towering figure
among the Jain community in USA and India.
He was instrumental and a key supporter of
the International School for Jain Studies
(ISJS) since its inception in 2005. He hosted
the first batch of the ISJS summer program in
Indore. ISJS family would be forever grateful
to Dr. Pandya’s philanthropy during the foundational years of ISJS.
Without his unconditional support, ISJS would not have scaled and
achieved success today. ISJS owes millions of thanks to him and his
family.

ISJS team pays its deepest heartfelt condolences to his
family and prays for peace for his departed soul.

Book Review in ISJS-Transactions (Online Research Journal)


ISJS invites newly published books on Jainism for review.

The book should not have been published before 2020. Authors/
Editors/Publishers are requested to send two copies of the book (one
for the reviewer and another for the ISJS library). Only one book
along with the review article on that can also be sent.

Lecture on “The importance of Prakrit in Literature
and Religion”




Tamil Heritage Trust presents lecture on “The Importance of
Prakrit in Literature and Religion” by Dr. Abhijeet Alagoudar.
In this lecture, Dr. Alagoudar will introduce the concept of Prakrits,
discuss some of the variants and dialects, explore the use of Prakrit in
drama and poetry as well as religious texts, and touch upon the
evolution of some of today's languages from the Prakrit source.

The lecture is scheduled for 05:30 PM (IST) on Saturday,

FIU and the Jain Community Launched A $3m Campaign

to Fund A New Institute



FIU and the Jain community, USA have taken another
significant step ahead by launching a nationwide campaign to
fund at least $3 million to establish an Institute for Advanced
Jain Studies at FIU's Steven J. Green School of International &
Public Affairs.

The center will function as a think tank, bringing together Jain studies
experts and connecting them with legislators, social activists, and
business leaders with the purpose of applying Jain principles to real-
world situations.

Opportunity to Teach Applied Jainism



Arihanta Academy is hiring a full-time Assistant Professor in
Applied Jain Studies to begin Fall (September) 2023, with an
annual renewable contract. The professor will be responsible for
teaching accredited graduate-level courses in Jain Studies and allied
fields of inquiry as well as live and pre-recorded public-facing
certificate courses on an ongoing basis. This is a fully remote position,
with the exception of travel for periodic academic conferences and
meetings. In addition to a competitive full-time salary, Arihanta
Academy provides other generous annual benefits including a travel
and research stipend. Applications are due by October 15, 2022.
Preliminary interviews will take place during the 2022 Annual Meeting

Conference at Ghent University on ‘Jain Practices of Literary
Transcreation’




Online Conference on 'Jain Practices of Literary Transcreation’,
will be held at the Department of Indian Languages and
Cultures at Ghent University on September 8 and 9, 2022. This
conference will be preceded on September 7 by the Acharya
Mahapragya Lecture given by Prof. Peter Flügel (SOAS, University of
London).

Registration is required. After registering, you will receive a
