Student Audience
Grace Vance (Hon Chem Per: 9) ; Alice Liu (AP Chem Per: 3-4)

Q: What do you think about Ms. Johnson’s jokes?

G: Well crafted and excellently executed.
A: They’re funny, but Ms. Johnson thinks that the Honors class don’t
get them, because they don’t laugh.

Q: Which one is your favorite?

G: ...so we’re finding the mass. No, not the church service dedicated to
chemistry, I get how that can get a bit confusing. - Ms. Johnson
A: “Shalom, Welcome to St. Francis Desales Highschool. Let’s give it up
for Monday, am I right?” *claps*

Q: Did you know Ms. Johnson is part of the show
choir group?

G: Yes

A: Yes

Q: Do you know the group’s name?

G: No
A: No

Q: What place were they placed in their
competition?

G: 2nd Place...I think.
A: 2nd Place or 1st place.

Q: Have you ever heard her sing?

G: No
A: No

Q: Do you think your class is her favorite? Why?

G: No, because we’re at the end of the day, and she’s probably tired at
that point.
A: Maybe. Yes. We’re a small class, we only have about 12 people, it’s
easier for people to ask questions.

Ms. Johnson is a person of wonder, from Die Hard jokes and puns in

the classroom, to her double life as a singer. Our teachers are amazing,
but we often only see them as teachers. Take time to learn about them
and you may learn surprising things you may have not known otherwise.

EQUAL EDUCATION
FOR ALL

Ed choice scholarships are necessary for students coming from
underperforming schools, to have the opportunity to attend a private
school. The Ed choice scholarship program is in it’s 14th year, it’s helped give
thousands of families the opportunity to pursue private education.

Written by Sonia Vargas “The Educational Choice Scholarship
(EdChoice) Program provides students
from underperforming public schools
the opportunity to attend participating
private schools.The program also
provides low income students who
are entering kindergarden through
sixth grade the same opportunity.
The program provides up to 60,000
EdChoice scholarships to eligible
students.” [education.ohio.gov]

Admissions director Julie Barber, believes
state sponsored scholarship funding is
important because it gives people that
otherwise would not be able to attain a
Catholic education, the opportunity to
grow in an environment that helps them
be connected with their faith. As Barber is

known to say, “Faith comes first.”

Barber believes that all schools, especially
private schools should have scholarships, but
more importantly tuition assistance, because
having a Catholic education is a resource that

should be available to anyone who would
like to recieve a Catholic education. Barber

explains, “We want to make sure
that is affordable to everyone.”

Barber believes the Ed choice program is
important because it benefits a number of
different people. It benefits the student:
giving them the opportunity to have a
Catholic education, it makes paying for
Catholic education affordable, and it
helps Desales open up additional funding
for families that may not have qualified
for tuition assistance otherwise. Barber

praises, “it’s an amazing outreach
to families that wouldn’t
otherwise have had the chance
to come to catholic schools.”

Financial director Tom Etgen, estimates that 25% of our student body receives help from the
Ohio Department of Education through the Ed choice scholarship program. Etgen
stated, “Many of those children probably would not be able to afford to come here without the
Ed choice scholarship, so it’s a huge benefit to those students and their families.”
DeSales offers additional tuition assistance to families that aren’t eligible for the Ed choice
scholarship. Etgen proudly states, “We in one way or another offer additional tuition assistance
for families at nearly a million dollars a year.”
To be eligible for the Ed choice scholarship you need to attend a school that meets the
following criteria:

Etgen believes that having the Ed choice scholarship as an option and being able to provide
tuition assistance is a blessing. Etgen states that being able to help people have the opportunity

to attend SFDHS who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to attend school here , “Is the best
feeling in the world!”

Etgen believes that the Ed choice scholarship is a blessing. Etgens admires how the Ed choice
program gives students the opportunity to receive a Catholic education. DeSales has had
hundreds of kids graduate from the school with full ride or near full ride scholarships to
universities that were Ed choice scholarship recipients. Etgen explains, “At the end of the day,
it’s been like 8 or 9 years and we’ve seen all of these kids go on and do wonderful things in
college and then go out into the real world, so I believe that they are actually paying back
society for their Ed choice scholarship.”

“The Ed choice scholarship
is important to me because it
lowers the cost of coming to
desales for my mom”.

Kendall Robinson, Sophomore,
Ed choice scholarship recipient

there are 188, 424 students

using the program.

a lot of doors for me”.

What the biggest rivalry in college sports means to DeSales

Written by: Devon Kerwin

Mason Brown- Freshmen

How long have you or your family been
OSU fans?
My parents both attended college at OSU
so they became fans when they went
there, and me and my sister have been
fans sense birth.

Do you have any special game day tradi-
tions or activities?
We normally have a large party, everyone
is required to wear a necklace made of
buckeyes.

What’s your favorite game or memory
from the rivalry?
At halftime we all rush outside to grab the
only 2 boards we have for corn hole.

Who’s your favorite player OSU player?
My all time favorite is Ezekiel Elliott, my
favorite player that currently plays is
Chase Young.

In what ways do you think OSU is better
than Michigan?
We are just a more dominant football
team right now in the series. I also think
our fans are some of the best in the na-
tion.

What are your predictions for the game
this year?
We will win with a final score of 46 - 32

Josh Morse- Senior

How long have you been Michigan fans?
I’ve been a Michigan fan my whole life.
Most of my dads family lives in Michigan.

Do you have any special game day tradi-
tions or activities?
We watch Michigan lose to Ohio state ev-
ery year and watch Michigan be bad.

What’s your favorite game or memory
from the rivalry?
My favorite memory is when I went to
the game in 2011 when Michigan beat
Ohio state at the Big House. I went to that
game and it was such a fun experience.

Who’s your favorite player Michigan
player?
My favorite Michigan player of all time is
Charles Woodson.

In what ways do you think Michigan is
better than Ohio State?
The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else.
Having the largest stadium in college foot-
ball shaking is surreal. Campus is better
too because Ann Arbor is smaller than Co-
lumbus.

What are your predictions for the game
this year?
Michigan losing once again big sunrise
there.

Bernadette DeGuzman- Senior

How long have you or your family been OSU
fans?
We have been Buckeye fans my entire life.

Do you have any special game day traditions or
activities?
On game day my family comes over for pre-
game and we have a pregame party and then all
watch the game together.

What’s your favorite game or memory from the
rivalry?
I don’t know if this counts, but this year I visited
campus and every “M” on campus was crossd
out. It was just really cool to see that this rivalry
is evident all the time.

Who’s your favorite player OSU player?
By far Braxton Miller, his passion and talent was
much fun to watch.

In what ways do you think OSU is better than
Michigan?
OSU is better because the fans are one big fami-
ly. No matter where you go you can yell “OH-” and
get an “-IO” back.

What are your predictions for the game this
year?
We will win and that team up north will never for-
get it!

Frank Sciaroni-Senior

How long have you or your family been Michi-
gan fans?
I’ve been a Michigan fan for as long as I can
remember.

Do you have any special game day traditions
or activities?
Usually I like to watch the game at home by
myself or I watch it with my uncle who is also
a Michigan fan.

What’s your favorite game or memory from
the rivalry?
Well we’ve only won twice in my lifetime and
one of the times I was 1 year old so I don’t real-
ly remember, so my favorite memory would be
when we won in 2011.

In what ways do you think Michigan is better
than Ohio State?
Michigan is still has more wins all time. I think
Michigan fans are a lot better and more loyal
than Osu fans. Also no stadium is better than
The Big House especially the Shoe. Sadly I’ve
never have been there for a game, but I did
get to go in once when it was empty and it was
awesome.

Who is your favorite all time Michigan player?
Denard Robinson

What are your predictions for the game this
year?
Michigan wins 38-31.
