URGENTLY NEEDED PAGE | 02

Yayasan Sunbeams Home is currently URGENTLY IN NEED of TWO
PASSENGER VANS. The vans of Yayasan Sunbeams Home have been
serving us for well over fifteen years, they are essential to our daily
operations. We use our passenger vans to fetch our children to and
from school and various events sponsored by well-wishers and
supporters. While they have served us well over the past years, due to
age the repairs needed to keep the vans in running condition have
increase exponentially. We are currently in urgent need for new
passenger vans for our operations to continue running smoothly. We
are asking for your generous support to help us continue to bring
SUNSHINE to the lives of our children~

Our new girls' building is nearing its completion and we have been working tirelessly to ensure a
smooth transition of our girls into their new home. We are beyond grateful to all who have aided
us in this project and know that your contributions would continue to bring joy, love and a home
to our girls. Your support is invaluable to our cause, please continue to support and join us in

Blessed New Year 2022; Chinese New Year and Blessed Easter.

" Out of Adversity Comes Opportunity " - Benjamin Franklin
"From Adversity Comes Strength and Greatness"

Inspite and despite of the prolonged Covid19 pandemic over the last 2
years, our Sunbeams Home have continued to survive - thanks to All
you Generous and Faithful Donors and Supporters.

We have indeed learned to be adaptive and adjust to the adverse
circumstances. In each of these difficulties we have learned to be
Stronger and become more Resilient in running and operating the
various Homes under our wings. Our Homes have "kena" a few times
of Covid19 infections. Our affected children were quarantined and all
the Ministry of Health SOPs were strictly adhered to. We thank God
that it was under good control and they recovered fairly quickly.

Despite no visitors allowed - You our regular donors continue in your endless support to our Homes,
thus enabling us to run the Homes with minimum disruptions. Our children and staff have learned in
the process of how to face these adverse situations, thus making what George Bernard Shaw says to
be true in each of our lives. " I can't control what life did to me, but I can control how I react. Therein
lies the Difference".

WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUOUS DONATION AND SUPPORT TO MAKE
LASTING IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF OUR CHILDREN.

Without benevolent sponsors, my friends and I at
Sunbeams Community Learning Centre would never have
had the opportunity to be part of the Duke of Edinburgh
International Award programme. It was through Mr. Steven
Ng’s networking that we have been able to connect with
our sponsors. Participating in the programme at the
bronze level has made our education more interesting and
meaningful. Our sincere thanks to our sponsors and Mr.

Steven Ng. -Andy Law

Participating in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award
(DOE) programme has enabled me to hone certain skills
such as drawing and playing football. In the DOE’s
voluntary service section, I also had the opportunity to
assist my principal in cleaning the classrooms at
Sunbeams Community Learning Centre as well as be
involved in other community service. My heartfelt gratitude
to Mr. S.H. Yong for sponsoring me on the programme.
Without his assistance, my participation in the DOE would

not have been possible. -David Zunaidi

Without her sponsorship, I would not have been able
to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh International
Award (DOE) programme. Not only have I been able
to hone my basketball skills in the programme, I have
also assisted the principal of Sunbeams Community
Learning Center in typing workbook questions and
performing other office tasks at the center as part of
the DOE’s voluntary service section. My gratitude

goes to my generous sponsor. -Roy Lee

Conducting research to complete school assignments and
projects, searching for informative articles and educational
videos on the internet as well as keeping in touch with
friends and family members have been made easier by the
Hewlett Packard desktop computers. Donated by CIMB
Bank, the 10 computers in Sunbeams Community Learning
Center computer laboratory are indispensable in our
education in the 21st century. They have enabled us to
keep in touch with current affairs and widened our horizons.

Our sincere thanks to CIMB Bank. -Eric

No words are adequate to thank you for everything that
you’ve done for me and the others at Yayasan Sunbeams
Home. Mr. Richard Ng. You have blessed us with
numerous entertaining and educational outings. Not only
that, the other wards and I at Yayasan Sunbeams Home
have also learned a lot of things from you. For example,
you have taught us the importance of saving money. I am
also grateful for the hoodie that you bought for me. We
will always remember your kind heart and you will always

be in our prayers. God bless you. -Harry Liew

ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY SECTION

This section of the Award provides participants with a unique, challenging and memorable

experience. The journey, with a clear and agreed aim, must be undertaken in a small

group in an unfamiliar environment, requiring determination and perseverance, thus

providing a sense of independence, self-sufficiency and discovery. The key elements of

the Adventurous Journey are teamwork in planning and undertaking Practice and

Qualifying Journeys against the background of real challenges posed by an unfamiliar

environment. The environment chosen needs to be challenging but within the capabilities

of the group. Adventurous Journeys should also be progressive through an Award

participant's involvement in the Award, from a relatively challenging journey at bronze
GOLDlevel to a much more demanding journey at
level.

COVIDThrough

Our29 children have been taking online classes since the pandemic began. It was not
easy because we needed quite a number of computers and phones for the children to
attend classes. Our home is very grateful to a group of enthusiastic people and the
principal of Alor Gajah Chinese Primary School for donating smartphones and tablets to
help us overcome this difficulty.

In July 2021, one of our staff tested positive for Covid, and the children and all staff were
deemed as close contacts. We were all worried because at that time the vaccines were
still unavailable. A total of 37 children and staff were required to go to a governmental
hospital for testing and were quarantined for 15 days. It greatly inconvenienced us
because the government was implementing the movement control order. We thank God
for His care and provision during the quarantine period. God provided breakfast, lunch
and dinner, as well as food and other daily necessities through many kind-hearted
people, to affirm that we do not need to go through this alone.

ALUMNI TESTIMONIAL PAGE | 09

Below is an interview with one of the alumni of Sunbeams
Home, Miss Elly Natasha. We spoke concerning her time in

Yayasan Sunbeams Home.

I: At what age or in which year that you came to Sunbeams
Home?
E: I came to Sunbeams Home at the end of December 2007.
I: Before staying in Sunbeams Home, with whom did you stay
with?
E: Before I come to stay at Sunbeams Home, I stayed with my
parents in Gombak.
I: Why did you stay in Sunbeams Home?
E: I stayed at Sunbeams Home because I wanted to succeed and
excel in both my academics and life. Another reason was that my
family was struggling financially, hence I was sent to Sunbeams
Home by my parents.
I: When did you leave Sunbeams Home?
E: I left Sunbeams Home after SPM in 2017.
I: What is the best memory you had while staying in Sunbeams Home?
E: In Sunbeams Home, I was taught many things in my studies as well as ways to be independent. I
was also able to experience new experiences while staying in Sunbeams Home. One of these
experiences was that I was able to hang out with people from all layers of society. I was also tutored
in English and Mandarin. I have many priceless memories here, including going for picnics, showing
off my talent on the big stage, learning to march in Boy’s Brigade and help provide aid to Orang Asli
villages especially in Pahang.
I: What did you do after you left Sunbeams Home?
E: While waiting to enter into college, I worked as a teaching staff in Praise Kid for two months.
After that, I received an offer to further my studies in Pasir Salak Perak Community College for two
years majoring in food processing and quality control. I praise God that I graduated with a GCPA of
3.87. I am now currently working in Kemas Kindergarten which is under the support of the
government.
I: What would you like to say to Pastor Tan & Pastor Victor?
E: I would like to take this opportunity to give the deepest of my gratitude to Ps Tan and Ps Victor
for taking care of me well since I first came to the Sunbeams Home at the age of 7. The lessons you
have discipline in me when I knew nothing help build me up into a better person for the future and to
be a positive impact to the community especially to the Orang Asli. Thank you, Ps Tan and Ps
Victor. May the Lord bless you two who I consider a father to me.
I: Is there anything you would like to say to the children that is still in Sunbeams?
E: To the Orang Asli community I encourage you with a slogan of the semai language "Bei hik
belajar sampai berjaya kateh pelajaran sebab pelajaran ajeh penting untuk masa depan kaum hik".
Which means “Let us learn together because these lessons are important to us for our future”. Don’t
waste the time you have because time is precious. Seize the opportunity when we are given to learn
at this young age. Rise up, O aborigines and prove to the outside communities that we aborigines
can succeed with education so that our lives will be on par with other communities.

FISH KEEPING WITH CHILDREN PAGE | 12

The art of fish keeping has been around for centuries, with the earliest known aquarist being
the Sumerians dating back 4500 years ago. You might be wondering what does that have to
do with us here in Yayasan Sunbeams Home. Well, let me introduce our YSH Fish Keeping
Programme.
The purpose of this programme is to provide our children with another interesting activity where
they can learn a variety of important skills. Interested children are taught the fundamentals of
fish keeping by one of our staff. He has over 10 years of fish keeping experience and seeks to
provide the children with a smooth introduction to fish keeping. The children are taught the
basic on water maintenance, aquascaping and aquarium setup. Currently we have a total of 3
aquariums set up throughout the home, each with its own unique aquascape and aquafauna.
Once every two weeks the children are tasked to help in doing the necessary water changes and
maintenance for the aquariums. By getting the children interested in this hobby perhaps they
would pursue it has a career or business in the future.
