Prayer Topic #15:
A Prayer for Leaders in Government
Scripture Reading:
Psalm 50:1-6, I Timothy 2:1-6
Reflections of the Heart:
“A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.” ~ John C. Maxwell
Scriptural Prayer:
Gracious Father, thank You for blessing us with leaders who are concerned about the welfare of our community. We thank You for giving our governmental leaders wisdom to identify and courageously address concerns that impact our nations. Thank You for abundantly blessing their lives. Lord, Your Kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. You rule throughout all generations. You always keep Your promises; You are gracious in all that You do. You help the fallen and lift those bent beneath their loads. The eyes of all look to You in hope; You give them their food as they need it. When You open Your hand, You satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing. Lord, we praise and bless Your Holy Name, forever and ever!
Almighty Father, the government of the earth is on the shoulders of Jesus Christ, the One we call Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace. Therefore, we confess that our leaders will rule in a manner that reflects the love and authority of Christ. By faith, we declare that our leaders and those who work with them will trust in You with all of their hearts and not depend on their own understanding. They will seek Your will in all that they do, and as they do this, we trust that You will show them which path to take. We declare that they will not be impressed with their own wisdom, but they will fear You and turn away from evil. Your Word admonishes that a house divided against itself 51
cannot stand; therefore, we decree that our leaders, on every level, will work together with leaders around the world for the good of all people. Our leaders will turn away from division and evil and do good; they will search for peace and work to maintain it.
Holy Spirit, please arise in the governments of all nations and cause Your enemies including racism, sexism, classism, partiality, confusion, and discord to be scattered. Continue to impart Your wisdom, discernment, and understanding to our leaders. Touch their hearts to govern with fairness and love for their citizens. Give them answers to address the issues that are adversely impacting our world, including poverty and economic disparity, environmental abuse, inadequate education and healthcare, rising unemployment, and the increase of terrorism and natural disasters. Father, please protect our leaders for injuries, violence and assassinations. Touch the Body of Christ to pray for our leaders, so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by Godliness and dignity.
Merciful Father, forgive our leaders in government for all acts of sinfulness. Forgive those who do not care for their citizens and rule by oppression. Forgive leaders who are stealing the wealth of their countries for personal gain. Forgive those who have not peaceably and fairly governed their nations with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Lord, have mercy and heal all nations. Lord, forgive me for (list any sins that you have committed). Holy Spirit, remind our leaders in government of those they need to forgive and help them to be quick to forgive. As for me, Holy Spirit, bring to my remembrance those I need to forgive. (Take a moment and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal names or faces of people that you may need to forgive. As He reveals them, say “I forgive name of person(s).” Now, trust the Lord to heal any wounds in your soul caused by unforgiveness.)
52
Holy Spirit, help our leaders in government not to yield to temptation but deliver them from the evil one.
Lord, You are exalted over all the nations. Your glory is above the heavens. Who is like You, the LORD our God? You are the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth. You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. You created all things, and they exist because You created what You
pleased. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
