HIGHLIGHTS FROM FACULTY CAREER DEVELOPMENT
ACADEMIC YEAR 2016-2017
Welcome to the first of an annual ‘year in review’ publication from Faculty Career
Development in the Wallace Center. A small unit of professionals undertakes each academic
year with a plan of initiatives that appeals to faculty across the spectrum from new to veteran,
adjunct to full professor, lecturer to researcher. Each academic year the design of offerings for
faculty is updated based on faculty input and continuous dialog in order to fulfill faculty needs
and to deliver programs that are engaging and worthwhile. This inaugural edition of our
yearbook serves as a reflection on the successful faculty programming, establishment of faculty
networks, and launching of some creative new initiatives on the part of faculty collaborators for
AY 2016-17. Your feedback on future programming and the value of this publication is welcome!

EVENTS W/ A FEW PICS AND CALLOUTS

FCD helping faculty advance their careers at RIT focused efforts this year on professional
development and mentoring programs as well as faculty orientation and special events. Key
events included:

I broke up your lists but maybe we want one list of events and then go back to describe
execeptional ones. However keep in mind that Lynn keeps saying the “beyond events” thing….
So ….. Don’t use a lot of formatting it’ll be a pain in the ass when I move to a document for final

:)

New Faculty Orientation - for putting this all
great job!” useful information
Call out box:
for sharing
The sessions were very helpful; thank you

together; you guys are doing a
“I just want to thank you all

and welcoming us.”

An add-on to NFO intended to help faculty make connections with each other is the new online
Faculty Roster that includes each new faculty’s research and teaching interests and to

encourage inter-disciplinary collaborations. Insert a screen shot.

Adjunct Faculty Orientation (each semester)

Adjunct Community Event: Teaching Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing Students: The "How To’s", Services,
and Benefits

FCD hosts professional development and networking activities exclusively for RIT adjunct
faculty. These are professional development and networking activities by RIT faculty and
staff for RIT adjunct faculty. Each semester you will be invited to presentations on important
topics that you suggest. This community of adjuncts comes together to network and share
conversation around teaching in today’s classroom, to learn about the many RIT resources
available, and to provide guidance and support to assist you when you have concerns or
challenges – or just to mingle with your peers! Adjuncts were invited to many of the events
that were offered to full-time faculty with the goal of creating a campus culture of inclusivity
across all ranks, disciplines.

Another follow-on to NFO was new in fall 2016: Your Cultural Surroundings: A Walking Tour of
RIT’s Art and Architecture -- a tour of RIT’s campus art and architecture. The university has
continually supported installation of significant pieces both outside and inside buildings. The tour will
discuss the artists and their work, and point out key features of our award-winning mid-century
campus. The tour concludes at The Wallace Center for refreshments and networking with your
colleagues. All faculty are welcome to this event to learn more about YOUR RIT!

Call out box: Great way to catch-up with colleagues but also to meet the new faculty.

I met two new faculty members and had a great conversation with them.
Thank you for the event. It was a great opportunity to meet other new faculty and other RIT family!
A nice chance to catch up with others across campus along with meeting new faculty members.

o Collaborated with NCFDD alums and David Martins to launch a Faculty Writing Support
group as a follow-up request from NCFDD participants to further their scholarship/writing at RIT
10/24/16

 Held encore presentation from NFO on Teahcing D/HH students.
o Prepared call and managed submissions for our 4 annual grants: Lecturer Professional
Development Grant, Faculty Mentoring Grant, Adjunct Professional Development, & College
Collaboration grants. Faculty serving on the selection committee enjoyed being a part of the
team that selects the grant recipients (clunky but you know what I’m trying to say). Each year
the committees are rearranged to reflect a diverse group of faculty across disciplines, gender,
etc.

Grants Exposed! Faculty Showcase was held for the third year (or 2nd?) where faculty have an
opportunity to share the outcomes of grant-funded projects over a wine and cheese social
hour. (photos available). This event has proven to be one of the most successful opportunities
for faculty to continue strategically building their networks as they meet others from across all
disciplines and exchange ideas for scholarly work and future grant projects.

 Great to connect with colleagues across campus in other disciplines.
 I talked with Caroline Delong during the networking time. I really appreciate her for sharing her writing

experience with me!
 This is a great networking event, in the past 2 years it has allowed me to meet new faculty, see how others

are approaching mentoring, and always gets me thinking of ways to collaborate outside my college.
 I like the social events a lot as it is critical for networking and creating collaborations with others I might not

have known, but I really like hearing what other faculty are doing with regard to pedagogy, research, data
analysis, -- scholarship and research. I am also interested in more info sessions on what kinds of grants
there are for TT faculty at RIT (or any faculty).
 It was good to hear what they are doing with the funds they are awarded.
 This is an excellent event to make us aware of what others are doing. I feel comfortable here to share with
those in attendance. Many new faculty were there and it allows them to ease their apprehension by seeing
successes.

o 360° Leadership Skills Inventory
o Conceptualized and Launched new FCD non-Newsletter (Faculty Forecast) -

o Mid-Tenure Review Panel discussion
o Completed mentoring article Growth and Development; ‘The Power of Many’
o Slow Professor – Author visit
o Newly instituted Faculty Coffee – appreciate and unwind

GRANTS, AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS

In addition to the grants program, the FCD team (with provost?) again supported XX faculy at
the Cornell Leadership Development program and XXX at the National Center for Faculty
Diversity and Development summer boot camp.

In response to continuing faculty requests for funding professional development related to
faculty leadership and academic management, Faculty Career Development provided XX

scholarships for the Cornell Faculty Leadership & Professional Development Program. For
the third year in a row FCDS in conjunction with the Provost’s office and AdvanceRIT sponsored
7 faculty scholarships for the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD)

Faculty Success Program (an online, 12-week intensive mentoring program).

Several grant opportunities were offered once again namely Faculty Mentoring Grants,
Lecturers' Professional Development Fund, and Adjunct Faculty Professional Development
Funding Plan. Although aimed at different target faculty groups these grants clearly link to
student learning as well as professional networking opportunities. Additionally, the awarding of
these funds allow faculty to showcase their teaching excellence, research activity, and
pedagogy in collaborative ways. The grants are available to all faculty, including our
international campuses.

Callout box (maybe)
· Mentor grants: awarding XX mentoring projects totaling over $XXX in new grants to help
foster individual mentoring as well as mentoring group activities
· Lecturer PD grants: XX projects totaling over $XXX
· Adjunct PD grants: XX projects totaling over $XXX
· College Collaboration: $XX

Also College Collaboration Grants designed to support activities that closely aligned with the
goals and objectives of FCDS and the RIT community with regard to faculty success, leadership
development, and mentoring, matched funds that supported partnership projects in 3 colleges.

Additionally FCD in conjunction with the Provost honors faculty with the Excellence in Faculty
Mentoring Award to an RIT faculty member who demonstrates an outstanding commitment to
faculty mentoring by actively helping less experienced faculty in developing their career at RIT
by offering advice, feedback and guidance that reflects a deep understanding of their
department, college and university. This year’s award recognizes Shal Khazanchi, Associate
Professor, Saunders College of Business and Elizabeth Kmiecinski, Associate Professor,
College of Health Science and Technology whose involvement shows all the hallmarks of
excellent mentoring of others’ teaching, networking, research and professional development. A
selection committee consisting of former Mentoring Award recipients is an integral part of this
process of recognizing their peers’ valuable efforts.
