A visit to Scotland often begins in Edinburgh, the capital city
of Scotland. Edinburgh is an old city with many important and

interesting buildings. After London,
Edinburgh is the second city for visitors
in Britain.

If you come to Edinburgh by train from
the south, the first thing you see when
you leave Waverley Station is Edinburgh
Castle. It stands high over the city.
Soldiers in kilts take visitors around and tell them the castle’s
story.

Edinburgh is a hilly city but it is a good city to
visit on foot. After the castle, you can visit
more of the Old Town. Go down the Royal Mile
to Holyroodhouse-the Queen’s home when she
comes to Edinburgh. It is three hundred years
old.

You can look at the
shops on the Royal
Mile or on Princes
Street in the New
Town. Some shops sell the famous
Scottish tartans and you can see
the name of the family which goes

with each tartan. Near Princes Street is
Charlotte Square, which is very beautiful.
There is also the National Gallery of
Scotland, with pictures from Scotland
and from many other countries too.

In August, you can visit the Edinburgh
Festival, the biggest arts festival in the
world with hundreds of different things to do and see.

district of Nepal. They all had poor eye vision. One day, the
youngest brother claimed that he should manage the money for
the family. “Elder brother’s sight is so bad. He cannot see how
much money he’s receiving or giving," he said, “and people take
benefit of his disability."
“As if you can see better", the second-youngest brother said
making a fun of him. “Are you saying money should be managed
by the one who has the best sight? Then, I should be given the
job. I can see better than either of you."
“I have my doubts about that," said the eldest brother. “Let’s
settle this once and for all. I’ve heard the monastery is putting

179 English 4

up a saying above the main doorway, tonight. Let’s go there
tomorrow and test our vision. Whoever can read the saying
easily will get the chance to handle our money. Do you agree?"

“Yes," said his brothers at
once.“Good! Now go away and let
me relax for a while."

After they had gone, the eldest
brother secretly went to the
monastery. He met a monk.“I’ve
heard you’re putting up a saying
over the doorway," he said. “Can
you tell me what it reads?"

“Certainly. It’s a famous saying. It reads: Be honest at all times."

The brother went away being thankful to his cleverness. A little
later the second brother arrived there.

“I heard you are going to put up a saying over the doorway.
Please tell me what it reads" he said to the monk.“Every one
of you wants to know," said the man. "It reads: Be honest at all
times."

English 4 180

“Is there any decoration around it?"

“The board has a flowery border." The second

brother went away being very happy with

himself. Soon after he had gone, the third brother reached there.
He too asked about the board. He also asked, "Is there any other
writing on it?"

“Only the donor’s name at the bottom," said the monk.

The next morning the three brothers reached the
monastery.“There’s the board," said the oldest brother when
they reached near the entrance. “I can clearly read out the
writing. It reads: Be honest at all times."

“Your sight is better than I thought," said the second brother.
“But not better than mine. Can you see the decoration around
the saying?"

“Decoration? What decoration?"

“It's decorated with flowers all around the board," said the
brother.

“Very good, very good," said the youngest brother. “But can
either of you see any other writing on the board besides the
saying?"

“Other writing? "The second brother got puzzled. “What other
writing is there?"

“The name of the donor" said the youngest brother, pointing.
“Can’t you see it? It’s at that corner."

At the same time, the monk they talked to the other day came.
He walked towards them.

“Oh, you’ve come to see the board," he said. “So sorry. We
couldn’t put it up yesterday evening. We are going to put it up
today.” The brothers realised their foolishness.
