BOOST IS THE

ENERGY

“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality says” Warren Bennis. The pathway I had chosen was
"Leadership development". Leadership can turn a stone into towers and has the power to change history. But before
I learnt the tactics, I had to come a long way.
How did it all begin? Completing the first two levels taught me the basics of speaking and listening. The projects were
moulding me on how to speak, and how to evaluate as I was completely engrossed in them. Toastmasters is one
place, where mentoring happens in a subtle and delicate manner. I feel evaluations are a form of nurturing as the
positive aspects are highlighted with little emphasis on the areas for improvement. I can vividly recall, how
embarrassed I felt when I had a long pause in my icebreaker speech. But, the evaluator was kind enough to point out
how the speech was engaging and later sent the evaluation by email. Some evaluations, like that done by TM Uma,
using acronyms, modifies our mind to accept any remarks and constructive criticism.
TMOD was yet another role that I didn't sign up for a long time. It was TM Meena who pushed me to take up the role,
and we came up with a novel theme "down the rabbit hole" conceptualizing cyberspace. That boosted my
confidence so much that I volunteered to be TMOD after a few weeks and came up with the theme "The deadly
rainbow" showcasing the causes and prevention of cancer. The hype shown by the members was a boost to my ego
and it further encouraged me to volunteer and reach great heights. Over the course of doing the various projects, I
had the opportunity of interacting with all the members including members from neighbouring clubs. As meetings
became online, I was able to do some roles in neighbouring clubs. One among them invited me to listen to their
speech to comment on the progress. Giving positive evaluations makes one prone to appreciate the good in
everything. Through the process of learning, I’m improving on my body language and tonality, as I can see the
importance of them in any speech.
Moreover, as I commenced the “Leadership Development”, the pathway assessment predicted my style to be a
‘Democratic leader’. While doing the group projects, I could relate to this style in me. I was able to coax the team
members to come up with newer versions of games to fit the online fun fete. Giving the members a wider berth
produces better results. A smile and a few words of appreciation go a long way to boost one's psyche. Doing this
pathway, I perceived that one can be a leader who propels and boosts others to reach greater heights.
A leader can make or break a vision through his/ her leadership. But to make the dream come true, a simple note of
appreciation and constructive criticism can make any creative ideas bloom from nowhere and will nurture the team
further. They are simple, yet significant.

NURTURING
LEADERSHIP

TM RICHA

How many of us like writing articles or blogs or stories on a regular basis? As far as I know, the current generation,
including me have no time to write anything but for Whatsapp.
The world is moving at an extraordinary pace and in the race to keep up, many of us have forgotten how it feels to
write. We have become so busy in our daily chaotic lives that the habit of writing has literally diminished. When I was
given the task of submitting an article for the Toastmasters Newsletter, I was literally blank. What to write? How to
write? And many more questions popped up. So many questions were running in my mind, the answers for which I
would have already known if I had imbibed the habit of writing that my teachers in school compelled me to do. Yet I
never did it. The issue is, we don’t like to be forced even if it is for our own good and I have learnt this the hard way
when I was told to write something for the magazine. Today, after frequent persuasion from my Toastmasters family, I
finally sat down and thought, let me give it a try.
Many good things in this world have happened by accidents or hit and trial. From the invention of the light bulb to
Einstein’s theory of relativity, great things have happened only because great people like Thomas Edison or Einstein
took that extra step and hopped on to the opportunity given to them. For me, this happened when I was told to be a
guest, approximately one and a half years ago, in a Toastmasters meeting. At that time, I had no idea what a profound
effect Toastmasters would have upon my life and career. That first step has changed me forever.
It all started with the Icebreaker session which according to me is the toughest part of Toastmasters. It took me more
than a month to give an Icebreaker speech but after that initial hiccup, the next set of speeches appeared to be a piece
of cake. Maybe because of the exceptional mentors that I have in Toastmasters, who encourage me to give my best
even if I make grave mistakes. Slowly I developed a keen interest towards speeches and communication; and started
surfing YouTube and Toastmasters videos.
The first thing that I noticed was the uniqueness with which all the Toastmasters were giving speeches. All the TMs
were communicating straight from their heart and their speeches were having all the essential elements of emotion
and humour which made us glued to the screen till their speech got over. After this, I understood that speeches cannot
be made through googling and that the scripts have to be only manually prepared using my thought process. This
motivated me to prepare scripts like “W vs. V”, “Grey Voice”, “B+ language ”,“ Guiding Stars” and so on at various levels
of my Toastmasters pathways, which received a lot of positive reviews from all Toastmasters. These reviews have built
my confidence to such a level that I am not afraid now to take on any assignment from my superiors or to lead any
group.
But Toastmasters is not only about giving effective speeches. Many times, you have to be a good listener as well. Then
only you can understand what you are asked and reply effectively. Effective listening prowess along with speaking
makes a powerful communicator, which is a must for every leader. Performing various roles in club meetings such as
Timer, Ah Counter, Grammarian as well as Evaluator, has honed my listening skills. Toastmasters and its members
provide an arena to build and effectively communicate in order to become an all-round achiever and leader in any field
you chose to be. If you are not aware of Toastmasters, I really suggest that you visit a nearby Toastmasters club, as a
guest. And trust me once you visit, you'll actually get to know the actual power of TOASTMASTERS!
