Spotlight_Simon Munro

Tell us a fun fact about yourself

I have two All Ireland medals. I won them within 3 weeks of each other.

Tell us about your career journey so far

aBsc(hons) Physics with Nanotechnology from TU Dublin, Msc Nanotechnology form
UCD, Year 3 of CDT PIADS in the University of Glasgow

What was your favourite subject in school and why

My favourite subject was Engineering. Besides the standard theory part there was also a
practical element. This was different from your standard classroom setting as you got to
design and fabricate a device from scratch.

What subjects/qualifications are useful for your role

I would say the most important subjects would be physics or chemisty. A combination of
both is also favourable.

What is your favourite thing about your job

My favourite aspect is working in the lab. As you get to work with many different
instruments and then you get to see your work “grow” in front of you. which is something
special.

What is a normal day in your role like

A normal day would be either spent in the lab working on what was planned for that
day. Or in the office reading, running simuations or planning lab work for the following
week.
