SOLAR
As an organization that believes recycling is good for the environment and that thinks our resources should be
protected, we have decided to move forward with implementing the use of solar power at the following locations:
Otay Mesa Outlet, San Ysidro Outlet, Chula Vista Retail Store, City Heights Retail Store and the San Ysidro
Retail Store. Installations began in June and should be finished by the end of October.
A solar panel is designed to absorb the sun’s rays as a source of energy for
creating electricity. Once the panels are installed and have begun to collect energy, the
electricity used at our solar installed locations will be provided by solar energy. This is incredibly
exciting! Even though our buildings are not net zero because they were built before many of
the energy efficient products were available, using solar energy is one of the most important
aspects of a net zero building because it leaves a significantly smaller carbon footprint. We
should continue to conserve energy whenever possible, turn off lights when you are no longer
using them, don’t run water needlessly, recycle bottles, cans, paper and anything else that is
labelled with a recyclable imprint.
Together we can preserve our planet for future generations.

New Via Segundo Outlet
If you haven’t had a chance to visit our new San Ysidro Outlet, you should stop in soon. The new facility opened
in May and is located at 2383 Via Segundo in San Ysidro. The property has two buildings on it; one is our new
Outlet and the other is our textile Distribution Center. The new outlet has a sales floor of 16,261 square feet, it is
3 times larger than the old one. The indoor sorting area is more than 5,000 square feet! Lots of room for more
product and more people. The Distribution Center is a centralized textile processing facility. Its purpose is to
prepare and provide product to our 24 San Diego Retail Stores.
“The new space has many features geared toward safety and convenience,”
shared Jacky Brown, Vice President of Retail.
“Our customers really enjoy shopping here. They have plenty of room to
sort through product before purchasing.”
The new Outlet floor plan was created to provide improved product movement and an efficient handling area.
The goal is to decrease costs and increase product flow.
When the new site was selected, a lot of thought was given to improving economic viability to the surrounding
community. We have been a part of the San Ysidro community for 20 years and we want to make a positive
impact.
This project was partially funded through participation in a government program called New Market Tax
Credits (NMTC). The NMTC program was created to assist in funding projects that will improve the value of their
community.

Core Values
CREDIBILITY • CREATIVITY • COLLABORATION
Our Guiding Principles
We are committed to providing exceptional customer service to all of our customers.
• We will greet all ambassadors and seek to work collaboratively with them, resolving
conflicts as they arise.
• We will greet donors and shoppers within 10 seconds and thank them for shopping
and/or donating when they leave.
We are committed to a clean, safe, efficient and productive facility.
• If you have a pile, you have a problem! We will quickly eliminate piles of product
and any other logs that inhibit the flow of goods or ambassador safety.
• Items are to be moved, not stored. Totes, Z Racks, bins, carts and other equipment
are for the ease of moving product.
We are committed to increasing the number of donors and donation value.
• Something good happens when we touch a donation! When we touch a
donation it is to move it quickly down the river to the sales floor. All furniture and
loose and large is processed first.
• Don't fall in love with your donations! We will rotate product on the sales floor weekly.
We are committed to increasing the margin for our mission.
• We will keep the inventory on the sales floor Fresh and Full.
• From the door to the floor in 24! We will process all donations within 24 hours of arrival.

New Tri-City Retail Store
On June 7, we opened our newest Retail Store at 3841 Plaza Drive, Suite B in Oceanside. The new store has
6,000 square feet of space with 2,500 square feet dedicated to processing. The larger processing space is
needed to tag, hang and organize apparel by size, color and category. It will also be used to accept furniture
and electronic donations. In the past, this location was only able to accept a small amount of furniture and no
electronic donations. The store’s additional retail space will be used to display furniture and electronics and
a greater amount of clothing and housewares. This location is excited to have four point of sale terminals
(one more than before) for faster checkout and an opportunity to provide exceptional customer service.
Goodwill believes that thrifting should be a fun experience that has the valuable fringe benefit of being
socially responsible. Goodwill customers contribute to the well-being of our planet by reusing product that still has
comfort, style and use. The best part about shopping at Goodwill is giving back to your community.
Approximately, 98% of the revenue generated at our Retail Stores, Bookstores and After Market facilities, goes
back into our community programs. We do our best to maximize each and every donation.

IMPROVING EMPLOYABILITY
At Goodwill San Diego we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue their dream job.
How many times have we heard the expression, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your
life?" Providing the opportunity for meaningful work and free workshops that improve the employability of our
ambassadors is a priority for us. Over the course of our lives, we spend a minimum of 86,400 hours at work.
We want that time to be filled with purpose and hopefully happiness too. We want to build camaraderie and
opportunity for growth.
Our free workshops are available to the San Diego community and they include the following:
Hiring Event Preparation Workshop
Every Monday from 9 am to 10 am. Come in and get prepared for a Hiring Event. Our career advisors will

Conflict Management

CAREER
PATHWAY
STEPS
As part of our mission of improving employability, our Learning and Development Department is helping our
Ambassadors improve their skills and prepare to obtain their career goals either inside or outside of Goodwill.
The Career Pathways Program provides training and leadership development opportunities for Ambassadors at
every level. This program makes sure that Ambassadors know what is needed to move to the next level or secure
a desired position when it becomes available. Although the program does not promise a position to anyone, it
improves the Ambassadors chances significantly. The program also improves our bench strength and makes us
a stronger organization.
