On Saturday, February 25, Chipola’s Brain Bowl team competed in the 2022 NAQT Community College Championship Tournament. Chipola sent two teams to the championship and both teams made the championship pool against 23 teams from eight states. Chipola’s A team was defeated in the final match by an undefeated Tallahassee Community College team, 135-274. TCC also defeated Chipola in an earlier playoff match, 120-295. The losses to TCC constituted Chipola A’s ONLY losses of the tournament. Chipola’s A team consisted of Brayden Hand, Taylor Munroe(captain), Ben Parish, and Trace Weaver. Chipola’s B team finished sixth overall. Their B team featured Kevin Eldridge, Noah Mercer, Trevor Shelton(captain), and Jack Taylor-Ebersole. Chipola A’s Brayden Hand and Chipola B’s Noah Mercer made the tournament All-Star team, finishing fifth and twelfth in individual scoring, respectively. Students will be excused from classes to participate in this fun event. SGA and the Chipola Organizations will have some great activities lined up for the day. There will be music, free giveaways and hotdogs and hamburgers for everyone. Everything is FREE, so come join the fun! Spring Frolics is April 6 Open Auditions For Chipola’s “The Secret Garden” Is March 27 The Chipola College Theatre will host open auditions on Monday, March 27 for the Spring Children’s Theatre Production, “The Secret Garden” from 6 - 9 p.m. at The Center for the Arts, Theatre. Auditions are open to the public. Both adult and children’s roles will be available. The production dates are May 8-12. Follow the “Chipola Theatre” Facebook page for more information. Chipola Student Support Services (SSS) recently hosted Chipola College Transfer Day on Wed., March 8 in the Student Center. Chipola students were able to meet with various university recruiters from across the Southeast to explore transfer admission requirements and scholarship opportunities. Serving as an information experience for students who plan to continue their education beyond Chipola, the following universities were represented: Abraham-Baldwin Agricultural College, Albany State University, Baptist College of Florida, Chipola College Admissions, Business, Education and Health Sciences, Florida Agriculture & Mechanical University, Florida State UniversityPanama City, Troy University-Dothan & Troy campus, University of Alabama, University of Florida, and the University of West Florida. The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) announced its Division I Men’s Basketball All-Conference Teams last week. All-Panhandle Conference members from the Indians include: Deyton Albury (First Team); Cliff Davis (First Team); J.T. Warren (First Team); Derrick Butler (Second Team); and Jamil Safieddine (Second Team). First Team selections Deyton Albury finished the regular season as the leading scorer for the Indians with 11.1 points per game. Albury had back-to-back 20-point games in two of the Indians’ biggest conference games this season- 21 points against Tallahassee then matched his career-high of 24 points against Northwest Florida three days later. Cliff Davis, missed the first eleven games of the season due to an injury but still came back to average 10.1 points for the Indians. In his third game back with the team, he scored a season-high 17 points against Enterprise. JT Warren averaged 9.1 points per game this season and scored a career-high 20 points on the road at Gulf Coast. He led the team in three-point percentage and made his first shot from deep against Florida SouthWestern, as the clock expired. Second Team selections Derrick Butler averaged 10.8 points per game for the Indians. His season-high of 27 points came against Southwest Mississippi in just his second game as an Indian. Jamil Safieddine has played in all 30 games this season and started in 24. Jamil used seven three pointers to score a career-high 21 points on the road at Gulf Coast on February 1. Chipola Men Place Five on All-Panhandle Conference Team The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) announced its Division I Women’s Basketball AllConference Teams last week. The Chipola Lady Indians placed five members on the All-Panhandle Conference team: Ashley Baez (First Team); Brenda McKinney (First Team); Tahnyjia Purifoy (First Team); Kaitlyn Bryant (Second Team); and Ivi Nikolova (Second Team). First Team selections Ashley Baez finished the regular season averaging 22.0 points per game, placing her fourth in the NJCAA in scoring. Three times this season she scored 40 or more points, including her career best, 43, on the road at Florida SouthWestern. Brenda McKinney will finish her career at Chipola as the player who has played in the most games as a Lady Indian. She scored a career-high of 17 points earlier this season when she helped take down previously unbeaten and #1 ranked Gulf Coast. Brenda averaged 10.0 points per game and led the Lady Indians with 7.9 rebounds per game. Tahnyjia Purifoy was one of only three freshmen selected to the All-Panhandle Conference Team. Purifoy averaged 9.9 points per game this season but played some of her best ball in conference, averaging 13.2 points per game with a season-high 22 points scored against Pensacola State on February 15. Second Team selections Kaitlyn Bryant averaged 10.1 points per game this season for the Lady Indians. Her career high came earlier this season at Hillsborough when she scored 27 points against the Hawks. Ivi Nikolova scored her season-high of 19 points against Georgia Highlands in her second game with the Lady Indians. She averaged 8.3 points per game for the Lady Indians.
