Chipola College celebrated Homecoming Saturday, Feb. 11 with the theme, “Celebrating 75 Years of Chipola College.” The Indians hosted Northwest Florida on Saturday for the Homecoming game. Chipola President Dr. Sarah Clemmons hosted all alumni and friends to attend an Alumni Reception in the Ronnie Myers Hospitality Room of the Milton Johnson Center. The women fell 67-61 to #3 Northwest Florida. Ashley Baez had 19 points to lead Chipola. Ivi Nikolova added 18. In Men’s action, our Indians took down Northwest Florida to move into sole possession of first place in the Panhandle Conference! Final score was 83 Chipola, 79 Northwest. Deyton Albury led all scorers with 24 points. Cliff Davis had 16 points followed by Paul Greene with 12. The student body selected members of the 2022 Homecoming Court. Grandpa Vanderhof and his wacky family have been happily living their zany lives in his house by Columbia University for many years. This madcap group of eccentrics, march to the beat of their own drum, with pride and joy. Their hobbies include collecting snakes, building fireworks in the basement, writing plays that never get published, and taking ballet lessons. Things like stress, jobs, and paying taxes to the government are for other people, not for them! But when practical young Alice becomes engaged to Tony Kirby, the family must straighten up to meet the new inlaws. Chipola Math Club Inducts New Members In Basketball News Both teams win over the Pensacola Raiders on February 15th. The Lady Indians are 5-5 in conference play and 11-12 overall. The men’s team moves to 26-2 on the season and 8-3 in the conference. Chipola will play their final home game on Saturday 2/18 against Gulf Coast.
On Saturday, February 11, 2023, the defending State Champion Chipola Brain Bowl team won the Panhandle Conference Tournament. This win clinched their bid to the State Championship tournament that will be held at Santa Fe College on March 23rd. Taylor Munroe was the tournament top scorer. Chipola Brain Bowl Wins Panhandle Tournament The Chipola Future Educator’s Club recently attended the Florida Future Educators of America Conference in Orlando, FL on January 27-29, 2023. The state conference provides a wonderful opportunity for chapter members to meet with fellow students, chapter advisors and new and experienced teachers. The conference also provides an opportunity to hear from outstanding teachers and others working in the field of education as they present a shared vision of excellence in future classrooms. The workshops provide important information, ideas and inspiration. Attendees participate in several competitions related to teaching. This year’s them was “Wild About Teaching.” Chipola member, Rebecca Mercer, competed in the Public Speaking Competition where she delivered a compelling speech responding to the prompt: Share about a teacher who has helped to shape who you are. How has that teacher impacted your journey towards becoming an educator? Ms. Mercer shared about the positive impact of local, long-time agricultural teacher, Tony Watkins, who passed away suddenly in September 2022. She won first place for the state and presented her speech to over 600 participants in the conference closing session. Chipola Future Educator Club Attends State Conference Some 66 students from 10 area high schools competed in writing, reading, speech, oral interpretation, literature, humanities, grammar, and Spanish contests at Chipola College on Feb. 3. The occasion was the Thirty-third Annual Throssell Literature/Language Festival hosted by Chipola’s Letters Department. The purpose of the festival is to recognize and encourage academic excellence. Prizes were awarded to first, second and third places, as well as two honorable mentions, in each category. The winner of the President’s Reading Contest received a special medallion as well as a cash award. Chipola Employee of the Month Chipola’s Student Support Services (SSS) students participated in their Annual TRIO Celebration – An Evening of Service at the Milton H. Johnson Center. This event commemorates the annual achievements of the Federal TRIO programs in communities across the country and raises the awareness about the importance of educational opportunity for ALL students across the United States. In addition, SSS students expressed their appreciation to Chipola and the community by volunteering in concessions. On March 8th, SSS will be hosting Chipola College Transfer Day in the Chipola College Café’ with over 15 area university representatives scheduled to attend. Chipola TRiO Celebration The Workforce Recovery Training Program (WRTP) at Chipola College is now underway with the onset of Spring classes and funds are available to cover tuition and fees in the Welding and Building Construction Technology Programs.
