General James Hart, Jr. was honored at Chipola’s 75th Graduation Ceremony on June 4th as one of the oldest continuously involved alumni from Chipola’s early years. General Hart, as a teenager, cleared land for the current campus to be built on, he later attend Chipola and credits Chipola’s graduation with providing the foundation and the mentorship to direct his life. His illustrious career in the oil industry in Texas, meritorious service in the Air Force and obtaining a jurist doctorate at UAB and a MBA at M.I.T. where all successes leading to the distinction of him being named 2007 Chipola’s Alumnus of the year. More recently, Gen. Hart has retired back home to Jackson County and continues to give back to Chipola through his support of the Chipola Foundation. Dr. Clemmons shared his story at graduation to inspire the class of 2023, encouraging them to use their solid foundation received at Chipola College and to let their life lessons, their “Chipola Story”, direct their future and their alumni story, just as Gen. Hart has. General Hart Honored at Chipola’s 75th Graduation Chipola Pool Now Open The Chipola College Pool is now open to the public. The Pool will be open to Chipola students and season pass-holders from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Non pass-holders may swim from 1 to 4 p.m. daily, for an admission of $4 for ages 12 and under, and $5 for ages 13 and up. All nonswimmers will be required to have a parent or legal guardian with them in the pool. Family and individual season passes are available for sale at the pool office. Season passes are $75 for individuals. Family passes are $100 for 3 people, $125 for 4 people and $10 for each additional child. Swimming lessons will be offered, based on a combination of nationally-recognized methods. A Parent/Infant lesson will be offered June 5-8 with a registration deadline of June 3. Two sessions of Children’s Swimming lessons will be offered beginning June 12 and July 8. Session 1 for ages 4-5 is June 12-22, at 9 a.m., with a registration deadline of June 10. Session 1 for ages 6-14 is June 12-22, at 10 a.m., with a registration deadline of June 10. Session 2 for ages 4-5 is July 10-20, at 9 a.m., with a registration deadline of July 8. Session 2 for ages 6-14 July 10-20, at 10 a.m., with a registration deadline of July 8. Sessions are 45-minute classes which meet Monday through Thursday for two weeks. Cost of each two-week session is $60. Pre-registration is required, with a $5 late registration fee. Swimmers must pre-register by completing a registration form at the Chipola Pool. An Advanced Swim Camp will also be offered June 26-29 at 8:30 a.m. with a registration deadline of June 23. Participants must be at least 8 years old and able to swim 25 yards unassisted. Adult classes for ages 15 and up, may be scheduled with sufficient interest. Cost is $65. For information, call Rance Massengill at (850) 718-2440.


Current and prospective Chipola College students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid Application (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Thursday, July 20, is the deadline to complete the 2023- 2024 FAFSA for students planning to use Federal Financial Aid to pay for Fall classes. Students must complete the FAFSA to see if they qualify for Pell, Work Study and other Federal Financial Aid. The FAFSA takes several days to process; therefore, students are encouraged to submit their online application at www.fafsa. gov as soon as possible. Once Financial Aid receives your FAFSA application, you will be mailed a letter requesting additional documents/forms in order to complete the evaluation process. If you have questions please call the Financial Aid Department at 850-718-2366. The application for Admission deadline for the Fall Semester is Aug. 11. The application may be completed online at www.chipola.edu. Fall classes begin Aug. 21. There are several steps in the application process: (1) complete the college Application online at www.chipola. edu; (2) request a high school or college transcript be sent to Admission and Records; and (3) take the College Placement Test (non-exempt students); call 718-2284 for assistance. Bobby Jackson is Chipola College’s Career Employee for June. Bobby Jackson serves as a Lead Groundskeeper, Facilities/ Campus Operations and has worked at the college since 2021. Pictured from left, are: Chipola President, Dr. Sarah Clemmons and Bobby Jackson. Chipola Employee of the Month Chipola’s Dual Enrollment Summer Academy began Monday, June 12. Approximately forty top scholars from local high schools are enrolled and getting a head start on their college education at zero cost. The Academy was created to reduce barriers to participation and increase equitable access and success in dual enrollment. In addition to high quality instruction, the six week program provides one-on-one advising and career counseling, academic support, and the only opportunity for dual enrollment students to complete orientation prior to high school graduation.Research shows that students who participate in dual enrollment are significantly more likely to graduate. Students who complete the summer academy not only save on tuition, they are better acclimated to college expectations. Chipola College is an Equal Access/Equal Opportunity Institution On Wednesday, June 14, students form the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Career Camp toured Chipola’s new Cyber Range. The Career Camp targets Juniors & Seniors across Jackson County in order to demonstrate the future workforce career paths in our area. Arlene Davis, Dean of School of Business and Technology, and Cyber instructor Charlie Lynch were excited to show off the Cyber Range. Chipola is currently registering students for Fall in the Cyber Security program. We offer Bachelor & Associate level programs as well as College Credit Certificates. Career Camp Tours Chipola’s New Cyber Range Professor Jeff Bodart was chosen by his peers to receive the Kirkland Award for Excellence in Teaching at the 2023 Chipola College Commencement Ceremony. Professor Jeff Bodart has worked at Chipola since 1995 teaching Astronomy, Physics and Physical Science. He has a strong reputation held by students and faculty. He teaches effectively, engages with his students, is passionate about what he does and prepares students to move on to major universities. It is not uncommon to see former students returning to visit Dr. Bodart to thank him for the role he played in their educational and professional careers. Bodart is a sponsor of the Student Scientists Association (formerly known as Science Club). He truly cares about this organization and the experience it provides for our students. Dr. Bodart has brought to life the love of science for students all across campus by sponsoring SSA. SSA hosts Science in the Park the first Friday of the month along with movie nights, field trips and guest speakers. Bodart earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, a Master of Arts degree from Washington University, and a Ph.D. from Washington University. The Kirkland Award was established by brothers, J.R. Kirkland and David Kirkland, in honor of their parents, the late Willis and Carolyn Kirkland of Marianna. The award provides a $1,000 bonus to the annual recipient.
