On Saturday, February 28, the Chipola College Brain Bowl Team won the 2026 NAQT Community College Championship Tournament, to complete their third consecutive national championship, matching the mark the Chipola teams achieved between 2011 and 2013. As in 2025, Chipola defeated the A team of Murray State University of Tishomingo, Oklahoma in an advantaged final. Chipola, coming in with one loss to Murray State A in the playoff round robin, won the two matches of the final, 315-235 and 415-300, to win the tournament. This was Chipola’s sixth CCCT championship.Chipola finished the tournament with a 12-1 record, while Murray State A entered the finals undefeated, and finished with an 11-2 record. Valencia College of Orlando, Florida finished third with a 9-2 record, while Murray State’s B team finished in fourth with an 8-3 record. Quiz bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students. Quiz bowl teams use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports, and popular culture. The Chipola team was captained by Devin Tharp, but the lead scorer on the team was sophomore Jeremy Scurlock. who 60.91 scoring average placed him fifth in the field. Both Tharp and Scurlock were high enough scorers to place on the tournament All-Star team. The Chipola College Theatre Department will present A Year with Frog and Toad on May 21, 2026. A hit on Broadway, “A Year with Frog and Toad” was nominated for three Tony Awards – including Best Musical. Based on Arnold Lobel’s well-loved books, this whimsical show follows two great friends – the cheerful, popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad – as they hop from page to stage in a story of friendship and adventure through four fun-filled seasons. Chipola College will host its 9th Annual Mental Health Symposium on Thursday, April 2, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Chipola Cultural Center.The event will feature student presentations, participation from local agencies, and a guest speaker, providing information and resources related to mental health awareness and support. The symposium is free and open to the public, and appetizers and refreshments will be provided.“The Mental Health Symposium provides an important opportunity to bring students and community partners together to share information and promote awareness about mental health,” said Linda Morales.The event is sponsored by Chipola College’s General Studies Department, the Jackson County Health Department, and the Chipola College Black Student Union.

Sophomore standout Taylor Rietveld has been named the FCSAA Player of the Year, adding to her recent recognition as the Panhandle Player of the Year.Rietveld’s outstanding performance throughout the season has helped lead the Lady Indians to another successful year and solidified her place among the top players in the state.With this announcement, Chipola Women’s Basketball has now produced both the Panhandle Player of the Year and the FCSAA Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons, a testament to the continued excellence of the program and the dedication of its players and coaching staff.The recognition is another example of the long-standing tradition of excellence that defines Chipola Athletics.Rietveld Named FCSAA Player of the Year The Chipola College Lady Indians Women’s Basketball program earned significant recognition in the Panhandle Conference postseason awards, highlighted by sophomore guard Taylor Rietveld being named the Panhandle Conference Player of the Year.Chipola placed three players on the All-Panhandle Conference First Team, including Serena Heeren, Jaida Redwine, and Taylor Rietveld. The Lady Indians also had three student-athletes recognized on the All-Panhandle Conference Second Team, with Mariam Coulibaly, Jazlyn Harris, and Daniya McDonald earning honors for their contributions during the season.Six Chipola Lady Indians Earn All-Panhandle HonorsThe Chipola College Indians Men’s Basketball head coach Donnie Tyndall has been named the Panhandle Conference Coach of the Year for the sixth consecutive season, highlighting the continued success of the program under his leadership.Chipola also had four student-athletes recognized among the conference’s top performers with selections to the All-Panhandle Conference Team. Peyton Wiggins, Desmond Kent Jr., Hedrens Bartelus, and Demarco Middleton each earned all-conference honors for their contributions during the season.Four Chipola Indians and Coach Tyndall Earn Panhandle HonorsChipola College student-athletes recently visited local schools as part of Read Across America Week, promoting the importance of reading and early literacy.Members of the Lady Indians softball team visited Cottondale Elementary School, where they read with students and discussed the value of education. Chipola basketball players also visited Jackson County Early Childhood Programs, reading to children and interacting with students in the classrooms.The visits provided an opportunity for Chipola studentathletes to engage with local youth and support literacy efforts in the community.
