The President’s Medallion is awarded to students who completed all degree requirements and earn a cumulative GPA of 4.0. The President acknowledges Fall and Spring recipients during our commencement ceremony by having them stand for applause. Summer recipients are not recognized during the ceremony due to their degree requirements not being complete so we want to recognize them now. Join us in congratulating these 4 President’s Medallion recipients from Summer 2023: Jalyn Griffin of Holmes County, Holmes County High Grad (2021), Lauryn Tucker of Jackson County, Victory Christian Grad (2021), Meredith Deal of Washington County, Chipley High Grad (2022), and Sophia Tocci of Jackson County, Cottondale High Grad (2023). Jalyn Griffin, shown on the front cover of Chipola Monthly with Dr. Sarah Clemmons, has chosen to continue her education at Chipola for her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Congrats to all of our Summer President’s Medallion recipients! President’s Medallion Award Winners Chipola College’s Guest Theater Director, Aaron Moore, recently selected the cast for the fall production “Barefoot in the Park” which will be presented October 13-14 at 7 p.m. and October 15 at 2 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Theatre. The cast will include Hannah Harris as Corie Bratter, Angel Gabriel Tirado as Paul Bratter, Aly Matthews as Ethel Banks, Caden Kearns as Victor Velasco, Carson Neel as the Telephone Repair Man and Michael Green as the Delivery Man. This comedy, written by Neil Simon, tells the story of Paul and Corie Bratter, who are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He’s a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she’s a free spirit always looking for the latest kick. Their new apartment is her most recent find – too expensive with bad plumbing and in need of a paint job. After a six-day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie’s loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-inthe-attic, Velasco, where everything that can go wrong does. Paul just doesn’t understand Corie, as she sees it. He’s too staid, too boring, and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous. Running “barefoot in the park” would be a start…. Chipola AFC Holds Hurricane Disaster Relief Drive The Chipola College AFC chapter recently held a supply drive for those affected by Hurricane Idalia by sending supplies to North Florida College. A truck load of supplies was delivered on September 7th. AFC collected donations of non-perishable food items, toiletries, paper towels, cleaning supplies and toilet paper at the college. Cash donations were also accepted. The Chipola College family knows all too well what it’s like in the aftermath of a hurricane and generously stepped up to help another college in their time of need. We would like to thank the community, faculty and staff for their heartfelt donations. UF Dental Students Four Chipola graduates have been accepted into the College of Dentistry at the University of Florida. All of them were members of the Chipola’s Honors program and Pre-Med Society. Bonnie Smith, Chipola Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and adviser to both Honors and Pre-Med Society, says, “We have a very good record of preparing students to enter limited-access programs in many fields, including: medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, engineering and law.” The Chipola faculty provide our students with a solid foundation to compete with university students across the state. For information about the Chipola’s Honor Program or Pre-Med Society, call Bonnie Smith at 850-718-2451 or Allyson Howell at 850-718-2247. Chipola College is an Equal Access/Equal Opportunity Institution Chipola Take Stock in Children Recognized with Luminary Award and Gold Level of Excellence Chipola College’s Take Stock in Children (TSIC) program has garnered the Take Stock Luminary Award and Gold Level of Excellence again this year. According to Dr. Matthew Hughes, Chipola College TSIC Executive Director, “Since Mrs. Debra Perdue joined Chipola nearly five years ago, the Take Stock in Children program has emerged as one of the top performing programs in the state. Under Mrs. Perdue’s leadership, Chipola’s program excelled in achieving its performance goals and has been awarded Gold status the past four years and Luminary status – the top award level – the past three years. I am very proud of the work that Mrs. Perdue and all of the program mentors have done in making postsecondary education a reality for many young people who may not have had the opportunity without the Take Stock in Children program.” “TSIC affiliates achieve Silver, Gold, and Luminary status by fulfilling the Take Stock Balanced Scorecard criteria. The 100-point scorecard outlines goals per pillar of student success, including mentoring, college readiness, program data, and the TSIC compliance standards. Affiliates recognized with the Gold award achieved 90 points or more and Luminary awards are for the overachievers who will only settle for a perfect score”, says Jillian Hasner, President and CEO of TSIC. A core requirement of the TSIC program is students are matched with a mentor when entering the program their freshman year and meet with their mentor each week throughout high school. Mentoring is a key to TSIC’s success by involving another caring adult that can provide an alternate perspective to their mentee. In addition to mentoring, the scholars meet with their TSIC college success coach, Mrs. Perdue, multiple times per semester as well as attend college readiness workshops throughout the school year. Mentoring paired with the additional support systems propel the TSIC scholars to success. Upon high school graduation the student receives a two-year tuition scholarship to any public college or university in the state of Florida. The Florida Prepaid scholarships are provided by donations from educators, business leaders and others in the five county Chipola College region. These donations are matched dollar for dollar by the Florida Legislature through the Stanley Tate Scholarship Tuition for At Risk Students (STAR) program. Donations toward TSIC scholarships are accepted throughout the year and mentors are always being recruited for students. Anyone interested in donating toward TSIC scholarships should contact the Chipola College Foundation at 850-718-2445 or https://www.chipola.edu/foundation. To become a volunteer mentor, contact Debra Perdue at 850-718-2428 or [email protected]. Recently, Chipola Student Support Services (SSS) held a two-day orientation session in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE). SSS students were encouraged to attend only ONE session to learn about SSS program and resources available. Student Support Services provides academic advising, campus tours/cultural activities, career counseling, financial aid and scholarship preparation. The Chipola ACE Lab, in collaboration with SSS, provides free tutoring sessions for all students, including test prep and remediation services. The large student attendance helped make each session, an unforgettable and memorable experience. We are confident that the level of enthusiasm, incredible student attendance/engagement, and the connections made will carry forward throughout the year! Student Support Services (SSS) Director Kristie Mosley stated, “SSS prepares students to succeed academically, as well as increases retention, graduation and transfer rates of students in the program.” In addition to the orientation sessions, the upcoming fall campus tours/ football games for the 2023-2024 year are as follows: Florida A & M University, Florida State University, Troy University, University of Florida, University of Central Florida and the University of South Florida.
