2015-2016 Annual Report

Leading the Effort to

Eliminate Hunger in
Our Community

Annual Statement for
July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016

We were able to
provide over

15 MILLION MEALS

to individuals who
were hungry and

food insecure.

Dear Foodbank Friends,

Even though, nationally, the number of families living in poverty has decreased,
along with the unemployment rate, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia
and the Eastern Shore continues to see the need for food increase. Thanks to
your support, during fiscal year 2016, we were able to provide over 15 million
meals to individuals who were hungry and food insecure through our network
of partner food pantries, emergency shelters, soup kitchens, as well as our
mobile pantry and child nutrition programs.
In the following pages, you will find information that demonstrates our steadfast
commitment to an enduring mission, leading the effort to eliminate hunger
in our community. As we continue looking for innovative and collaborative
ways to effectively fulfill our mission, we have adopted a more holistic
approach to our services and programs based on strategic partnerships with
like-minded organizations. We are also leveraging support from local farmers
with a renewed commitment to providing fresh fruits and vegetables to our
families — particularly those living in food deserts with limited access to
healthy options. We want to do more than just feed people food; we want to
ensure that they have healthy choices in the food we provide.
This year, we celebrated 35 years of providing food to hungry children and
families, and we’re reminded of the unwavering support and contributions from
our volunteers, donors, and community partners — the true force behind our
service delivery model. Because of you, we are able to affect thousands of
lives in our community every year.
In 2017, we are even more inspired and energized to break the cycle of food
insecurity in our region, and look forward to working with you to ensure a
hunger-free community.
Thank you for your continued support.

Best regards,

Ruth Jones Nichols, PH.D. Paul G. Finch
Chief Executive Officer President

*Feeding America defines the Meal Gap as a conversion of the total annual food budget shortfall in a specified area
divided by the weighted cost per meal in that area. The meal gap number represents the translation of the food budget
shortfall into a number of meals.

The Effort

The Foodbank secures food donations from various sources including retail
partners, food drives, and individual donations. The distribution of food to
hungry families would not be possible without the collaborative effort of our
donors, partners, and committed volunteers.

To Eliminate Hunger

HUNGER VS. FOOD INSECURITY – There’s a Difference!

USDA Economic Research Service defines food insecurity as a state in which
“consistent access to nutritionally adequate and safe food is limited or uncertain
due to a lack of money and other resources at various times during the year.”
Hunger is the “physiological state that describes the physical pain and
discomfort an individual may experience.”
Everyone experiences hunger. In fact, it is the discomfort we feel that prompts
us to look for a snack or something to eat at meal times. But, hunger — as a
result of food insecurity — is a much different discomfort. It is a physical pain
because the lack of food is constant, rather than a fleeting moment. This is the
hunger we strive to eliminate.

BackPack Program

Imagine being a child and dreading
the weekends. Instead of looking
forward to two school-free days like
your peers, you know that it means
two days of not having any food to eat.
It means going to school on Monday
so hungry you can’t concentrate on
schoolwork. It is for this reason that our
BackPack program continues to grow.
This program responds to the needs
of children — discreetly distributing
nutritious food to children at the end of
the school day and before weekends
and school breaks. The food is child-friendly, non-perishable, and easily-consumed.
This is food that we purchase, which is why monetary donations for this program are
so vital. It costs $150 per child per year to provide BackPack meals during the school
year. In 2015/2016, the Foodbank filled 62,379 bags of food for 3,473 students
participating in the program.

Mobile Pantry

Driving to the grocery store or taking public transportation may seem easy enough,
but what if you do not have a car and live in a rural area without access to public
transportation? Suddenly, it isn’t so easy. The Foodbank’s Mobile Pantry provides
a means for individuals and families to receive food when they cannot travel to an
agency, or their local agency is at-capacity. In 2015/2016, the Mobile Pantry delivered
1.4 million pounds of fresh, refrigerated, and
frozen food at 36 different sites throughout the
service area. Thanks to the generosity of the PRA
Group, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia
and the Eastern Shore was able to augment
efforts by purchasing a brand new refrigerated
truck that will enable the organization to provide
an additional 1 million pounds of food annually.

Kids Café

We often take for granted the ability to come home from a long day at work or school
and to sit down to an evening meal. For many in our community, an evening meal
isn’t possible; but our Kids Café program makes it possible. Kids Café is a national
program offering students ages 5 through 18 free, nutritious evening meals and/
or snacks within walking distance from their schools. With the help of our partner
agencies, the Foodbank supports 21 Cafés during the school year and summer in
low-income areas, feeding over 2,200 children in 2015/2016.

In Our Community

A Holistic Approach to Eliminating Hunger

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern
Shore has been increasingly committed to adopting a more
holistic service model, while engaging the community in
hunger relief efforts. In addition to receiving food, families
facing food insecurity are now able to take advantage of free
courses that provide information on affordable and healthy
food preparation.

Chef Damon K. Covington, founder and owner of the Urban
Culinary Institute, knows about food insecurity — having
grown up facing similar challenges. A native of Muskegon
Heights, Michigan, Damon recalls making visits to the local
food pantry with his grandmother — standing in line and
waiting to see what type of food they would take home.
Reflecting on his humble beginnings, Chef Damon is
sensitive to the needs of families that receive services from
the Foodbank’s partner agencies, and committed to helping
families in the community where he now lives and works.

This year, Chef Damon partnered with the Foodbank to host the “Collaborating for
Clients” cooking series – where he teaches how to prepare affordable meals using
fresh and locally grown produce. Through these courses, Chef Damon shares
recipes and cooking techniques that help food insecure families stretch their food and
dollars to create multiple nutritious meals on a budget.

“GROWing” It Forward

In May 2016, the students at Norfolk
Collegiate’s Lower School (NCS) embarked
on an effort to renovate the school’s
dilapidated courtyard, which needed
significant improvements. With the help
of donations, the students turned the
courtyard into a greenhouse, chicken coop,
and garden where they could harvest
spinach, carrots, cucumbers, and plenty
of other produce. In addition to learning new mathematical and weather pattern
concepts related to gardening, the students also gained insight on the importance of
community engagement and volunteerism.

Students in Norfolk Collegiate’s summer clubs contributed their freshly grown 9
produce and eggs from the resident NCS chickens to the Foodbank. These
donations helped support our Foods to Encourage initiative, which encourages
donors to give fresh produce to ensure our children and families have access to
healthy food options.
