Great Stupa at Sanchi

The Great Stupa was originally built in the 3rd century BCE by the
Mauryan emperor Ashoka and is believed to house ashes of the Buddha.
The simple structure was damaged at some point during the 2nd century
BCE. It was later repaired and enlarged, and elements were added; it

reached its final form in the 1st century BCE.
Beautifully proportioned, Stupa 1 (Great Stupa) is the main structure on
the hill. Originally constructed by Ashoka, it was later enlarged and the

original brick stupa enclosed within a larger one made in stone.
Encircling the stupa is a wall with four entrances through magnificently

carved toranas (gateways) that are the finest Buddhist works of art in
Sanchi

[strings]. The history of the sitar is disputed, with Western
scholars favouring West Asian origins and Indian scholars
