WELCOME

Since 1960, ESMol welcomes children from European and overseas families who live and work in Belgium or the Netherlands. Every day, buses bring pupils from
Antwerp and Eindhoven.

Our school has four linguistic sections: a German, English, French and a Dutch-speaking section.

All pupils prepare for the European Baccalaureate. They take this examination at the end of the seventh year, and the diploma is recognized in all European
universities and in many universities overseas. The curriculum has been designed so that pupils may, at any stage and without difficulty, go back to their national
system.

HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

The European Schools are official educational establishments controlled jointly by the governments of the Member States of the European Union. In all these
countries they are legally regarded as public institutions.

The European Schools began in October 1953 in Luxembourg, on the initiative of officials of the European Coal and Steel Community, with the support of the
Community’s institutions and the Luxembourg Government. This experiment in education, side by side, of children of different mother tongues and nationalities
quickly took shape as the six different governments and Ministries of Education co-operated in matters of curricula, appointment of teachers, inspection and
recognition of levels attained.

In April 1957, the signing of the Protocol made the Luxembourg School the first official European School. The first European Baccalaureate was held there in July
1959 and the qualification was recognised as fulfilling basic entrance requirements by all the universities of the member states.

The success of this educational experiment encouraged the European Economic Community and Euratom to press for the establishment of other European
Schools at their various centres.

Today there are 13 traditional European Schools in 7 different countries , with a total of approximately 24,000 pupils on roll.

The mission of the European Schools is to provide a multilingual and multicultural education for nursery, primary and secondary level pupils.

Based on the recommendation of the European Parliament, the European Schools have opened up their curricula and European Baccalaureate since 2005 for
national schools.

Accredited European Schools are schools which offer a European education that meets the pedagogical requirements laid down for the European Schools but
within the framework of the national school networks of the Member States and hence outside the legal, administrative and financial framework to which the
European Schools are compulsorily subject. At present there are 8 Accredited European Schools and other ones are planned to be open.

AIMS OF THE EUROPEAN SCHOOLS
The words which express the essential aims of the European Schools have been sealed, in parchment, into the foundation stones of all the schools:

Educated side by side, untroubled from infancy by divisive prejudices, acquainted with all that is great and good in the different cultures, it will
be borne in upon them as they mature that they belong together. Without ceasing to look to their own lands with love and pride, they will
become in mind Europeans, schooled and ready to complete and consolidate the work of their fathers before them, to bring into being a
united and thriving Europe.

OBJECTIVES
 to give pupils confidence in their own cultural identity – the bedrock for their development as European citizens;
 to provide a broad education of high quality, from nursery level to university-entrance;
 to develop high standards in the mother tongue and in foreign languages;
 to develop mathematical and scientific skills throughout the whole period of schooling;
 to encourage a European and global perspective overall and particularly in the study of the human sciences;
 to encourage creativity in music and the plastic arts and an appreciation of all that is best in a common European artistic heritage;
 to develop physical skills and instil in pupils an appreciation of the need for healthy living through participation in sporting and recreational activities;
 to offer pupils professional guidance on their choice of subjects and on career/university decisions in the later years of the secondary school;
 to foster tolerance, co-operation, communication and concern for others throughout the school community and beyond;
 to cultivate pupils’ personal, social and academic development and to prepare them for the next stage of education.
 to provide Education for Sustainable Development with a cross curriculum approach in line with European and international documents.

EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES
 Basic instruction is given in the official languages of the European Union. This principle allows the primacy of the pupil’s mother tongue (L1) to be
safeguarded.
 Consequently, each school comprises several language sections. The curricula and syllabuses (except in the case of mother tongue) are the same in all
sections.
 The conscience and convictions of individuals are respected. Religious education or education in non-confessional ethics is an integral part of the
curriculum.
 To foster the unity of the school and encourage genuine multi-cultural education, there is a strong emphasis on the learning, understanding and use of
foreign languages. This is developed in a variety of ways.

TRANSPORT

The Parent Association organises bus transport in order to create a possibility for pupils, living at a major distance from the school, to come to the European
School Mol every day, safe and sane. Only children whose parents are members of the Parents Association may use the bus.

ROUTES AND BUS STOPS
The bus route is determined by the following factors:

 safety of the route
 The shortest possible average journey per pupil, taking the cost into consideration.

Bus stops are decided upon annually by the member of the P.A.-Board in charge of the transport in consultation with the school. Each bus follows a timetable
with a departure time allocated to each bus stop. A bus will not leave a bus stop before the prescribed time, unless all the known pupils for that bus stop are
already in the bus. The transport committee will transmit a list of pupils and bus stops to the Bus Company.

To prevent delays, pupils must arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the time of departure.

Parents who transport their children to and from a bus stop are responsible for the smooth running of this. They must stand on the side of the road where the
bus will stop and ensure that the child does not unexpectedly cross the road.

RESPONSIBILITY
Parents are responsible for their children's behaviour during the journey.

Parents accept responsibility and liability from the moment their child boards the bus, until the child has left the bus, and the bus has left the bus stop.

FINANCIAL ASPECTS
The bus transport is not subsided by any institution. As a consequence, the parents accept responsibility for paying the bus fees, these fees are fixed annually by
the Transport Committee.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION

In the European School system, the Parents Associations (PA) play a key role in providing services such as transport, after-school activities and day care and
canteen management.

The PA is also an essential element to represent the interests of your children, as we are the interface between parents, the school management, the various
school committees and the Board of Governors (which manages all European schools).

The subscription to this association will ensure that you fully benefit from this teamwork. Membership of the Parents Association is voluntary and open to all
parents whose children attend the European School of Mol; but note that all parents whose children use the Association’s bus services and/or day care have to
be enrolled as members.

You can always contact any member of our Committee if you have questions.

English is the main working language in the Parents Association meetings and internal communications, but do feel free to contact us in Danish, Dutch, Finnish,
French, German, Norwegian, Spanish or Swedish should you feel more comfortable in any one of these languages.

The cheapest, fastest and most practical means of communication for us to contact you is by email. Please make sure that the Parents Association has your most
recent email address and most important of all that, when registering your children at the school, you give permission to the school to transmit your contact
details to us.

BOARDING

Vele ouders kiezen niet alleen voor een internaat om studieredenen, maar dikwijls hebben ze een drukke job of een job met wisselende uren waardoor ze hun
kinderen onvoldoende structuur kunnen bieden. Regelmaat is een onmisbare factor in het leven, zeker bij jongeren. Dit geeft hen een veilig gevoel.

In De Immert creëren we voor uw kind een studie(t)huis.Door de regelmaat, rust en beperkte keuzevrijheid bieden we een gezonde studiesfeer en geven we de
nodige professionele begeleiding in hun studieproces. Al onze opvoeders beschikken over een pedagogisch diploma en zijn gekwalificeerd om het gegeven
onderwijs op te volgen.

We omringen onze internen met de nodige zorg en bieden hen voldoende ruimte om te ontspannen op een actieve en passieve manier. De groene omgeving en
het grote domein bieden vele mogelijkheden op het gebied van recreatie.

Door het samenleven met andere jongeren kunnen de internen zich op sociaal gebied volop ontwikkelen tot evenwichtige volwassenen met een ruime kijk op de
maatschappij. Dikwijls worden er vriendschappen voor het leven gesmeed.

SAMEN LEVEN
De jongeren verblijven in het weekend en tijdens de verlofperioden thuis maar tijdens de schoolweken zijn ze vijf dagen per week op het internaat.

We zorgen voor aangename ruimtes waar de jongeren zich goed voelen en waardoor ze het internaat als een tweede thuis beschouwen. Het welzijn van de
internen wordt hierdoor bevorderd zodat ze zich ontplooien tot zelfstandige jongeren met waarden zoals respect, verantwoordelijkheid, tolerantie.

In De Immert verblijven kinderen en jongeren van zeer uiteenlopende leeftijd uit verschillende culturele en sociale milieus, scholen en landen. Door het
multicultureel gezelschap is het voor de internen een extra uitdaging om tot een goede sociale integratie te komen en hebben ze een extra troef in hun latere
leven en loopbaan. Alhoewel we een instelling zijn van het GO! Onderwijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap hoor je in De Immert vele talen. Zowel op een passieve
als actieve manier nemen de jongeren woorden en uitdrukkingen over uit een andere taal.

Samen eten is een sociaal gebeuren. We bieden de jongeren een evenwichtige gezonde maaltijd aan die in de eigen keuken wordt bereid met dagverse
producten door een geschoolde kok volgens de begrippen van volksgezondheid (HACCP-normen). Door een gevarieerd eetpatroon trachten we een gezonde
levensstijl bij te brengen waardoor de internen zich gezond en fit voelen. Aan tafel worden waarden als correcte houding, sociale omgang en wellevendheid
aangescherpt. Voldoende slapen zorgt ervoor dat de jongere zich beter kan concentreren en dus beter kan presteren. De opvoeders waken erover dat 's avonds
het licht op tijd wordt gedoofd. De internen leren hier dat ze moeten rekening houden met hun leeftijdgenoten, de privacy moeten respecteren en zorg moeten
opbrengen voor het materiaal van het internaat en van elkaar. De internen van het secundair onderwijs hebben een eigen, ruime kamer. Ze kunnen die naar
eigen goeddunken inrichten zodat ze zich er comfortabel voelen.

De internen van het basisonderwijs delen een kamer met drie tot vier andere kinderen. Hierdoor voelen ze zich veilig. Zo stimuleren ze elkaar tot
zelfredzaamheid.

SAMEN LEREN
Leren is niet louter studeren. Leren is ook het verwerven van vaardigheden en attitudes.

De Immert zorgt voor duidelijk afgebakende grenzen waarbinnen het leven eenvoudiger is.

Tijdens de vaste dagelijkse studieperiode wordt de keuzevrijheid voor de internen beperkt. Dit biedt hen de mogelijkheid om deze periode optimaal te gebruiken
om te studeren. Ze leren zelfstandig werken en zijn zelf verantwoordelijk voor een optimale tijdbesteding.

De internen van het basisonderwijs maken hun taken en leren hun lessen in de gemeenschappelijke studiezaal onder de deskundige begeleiding van een leraar -
opvoeder. De internen van het secundair onderwijs studeren op hun eigen kamer met toezicht en controle van een leraar - opvoeder. Bij specifieke
studieproblemen kan ook de hulp ingeroepen worden van medestudenten.

Omdat men het informatica gebeuren niet meer kan wegdenken in deze geïnformatiseerde maatschappij, beschikt het internaat natuurlijk over een draadloos
internet. De Immert stelt enkele pc's ter beschikking voor het school - huiswerk. Om goede schoolresultaten te halen is het nodig om regelmatig te studeren.
Goede resultaten geeft de jongere een bevredigend gevoel, het zelfvertrouwen stijgt en de interesse voor het klasgebeuren neemt toe.

SAMEN SPELEN
In De Immert is niet enkel het leren belangrijk, ook de ontspanning neemt een ruime plaats in. Er is weinig tijd en gelegenheid om zich te vervelen (vb. ping-
pong, go-carts, biljarten, tafelvoetbal, fietsen, speelhoek voor de kleinsten met aangepast speelgoed, playstations, …)

Door het groene en ruime domein kan de jongere zich fysiek uitleven op een van de sportvelden. Sociale vaardigheden zoals samenwerken, plezier maken,
omgaan met verliezen worden hier aangeleerd.

Tijdens de woensdagmiddagen bieden we activiteiten aan binnen of buiten De Immert. Er wordt steeds voldoende begeleiding voorzien door professionele
opvoeders.

Voor de jongeren die op woensdagmiddag passief willen ontspannen projecteren we wekelijks een recente, aangepaste film op groot scherm met surround
system. Ze wanen zich in een echte cinema.

Doven van de lichten

DE OUDERS/ DE SCHOOL
De ouders blijven in de eerste plaats de aangewezen verantwoordelijke personen voor de internen. Tijdens de vrije momenten kunnen de jongeren het contact
onderhouden via de telefoon, GSM, internet.

Vanaf maandagmorgen 8u tot en met vrijdagmiddag 12u is het steeds mogelijk voor de ouders om met het internaat te telefoneren. Hun kind wordt aan de
telefoon geroepen tijdens de vrije momenten.

Er is regelmatig contact tussen de beheerder / opvoeders van het internaat en de school. Bij problemen in school of op het internaat op studie of persoonlijk
gebied, zoeken we samen naar een oplossing.
