Pro Bono Network | 2016 Impact Statement 1

Pro Bono Network Founders’ Letter

Dear Friends,
In 2011, a group of impassioned attorneys created Pro Bono Network as a

means to bring attorneys—solo, small practice, and attorneys at home—into the
fold of pro bono legal aid delivery. The hope was to engage greater numbers of
attorneys to deliver civil legal aid services in Illinois.

Five years later, Pro Bono Network is a resounding success.

We have blossomed from 10 attorneys and a single pro bono project in 2011 to
a transformative model of pro bono legal aid delivery, with over 200 attorneys,
partnerships with 10 different legal aid agencies and many more pro bono offerings
in the works. And attorneys keep joining us—daily!

Luckily, we have not done it alone. Pro Bono Network has wonderful

supporters—lawyers and non-lawyers alike—all dedicated to our mission of
empowering attorneys to give of themselves to help staunch the enormous demand
for civil legal aid.

Our progress to date?

Hundreds and hundreds of clients from all over Illinois are now receiving legal
aid services when they otherwise would not. Equally important and our point of
differentiation: each attorney who joins our network is usually not volunteering for

legal aid before finding Pro Bono Network. In fact, they often are not even

looking for pro bono work because they had no idea such an organization exists.

Pro Bono Network is the only agency in Illinois and, as far as we know, the

country, that purposely works to expand existing legal aid agency services by creating
the infrastructure that is necessary for these attorneys to volunteer their pro bono
service. As you read through our Impact Statement, we hope to impart a sense of
the model we have created and why it takes far more than matchmaking to make
it happen.
Thank you for joining us and for your support.
