The Program IIE Program Fees
The teacher category of the J‐1 Exchange Visitor Program Fees to be paid by the host school
offers foreign teachers the possibility to teach full‐time in or host school district:
accredited public and private primary and secondary schools
in the United States. J‐1 teachers may teach at the pre‐ $1500 IIE sponsorship fee (for
kindergarten level in language immersion programs. up to 12 months)
The goal of the program is to promote cultural exchange $500 extension fee (per year)
between foreign teachers, their students abroad, and the US $750 expedited processing
school community. Teachers will return home after their
exchange and share their knowledge of US culture and (optional)

US host schools must provide a full‐time position as teacher of
record, with a minimum of 32 hours per week of teaching or minimum J‐1 visa holder

Positions are temporary, do not lead to tenure, and are

Cost of Living

approximately $2000 per month, while housing in a town in

Overall, IIE recommends that each teacher have $2500 per month available, either via salary or
combination of salary and personal savings.

Payroll Deductions
Your U.S. employer, the host school or school district, will deduct taxes from your paycheck. J‐1
exchange visitors are subject to Federal, State and Local income taxes but are exempt from FICA and
FUTA. Estimated payroll deductions will be listed in the “Estimated Expenditure Form” that your host
school completes during the IIE application for sponsorship. Teachers should expect to pay 22% ‐ 24% of
their annual salary in taxes. U.S. tax returns are filed in April for the preceding year.

school district contact IIE to request our “Application for J‐1 Sponsorship”. Teachers will be asked to
submit eligibility documentation to IIE including, but not limited to: Resume, passport, reference letters,
diplomas. All candidates must have high proficiency in English language.
Tip: Check your passport now! It should be valid at least 6 months past your estimated departure from the U.S.
IIE accepts applications between March 1 and July 15 for positions starting in fall of that year. J‐1
exchange teachers must arrive in time for the 1st day of school, so make sure you plan in advance! IIE
recommends submitting the application at least 2‐3 months in advance of your intended arrival date.
