About The Tech:

The Tech Museum of Innovation is a family-
friendly interactive science and technology
center located in the heart of downtown San
Jose, California. It has become a landmark for
visitors seeking a glimpse of the most inventive
place on Earth — Silicon Valley.

Thanks to the vision of this institution’s
leadership and unwavering support from staff
members, volunteers, donors and patrons, The
Tech has grown to be far more than just a
museum. It is a valued community resource for
education and innovation, one that in 2015 was awarded the National Medal for Museum and Library
Service, the highest honor a United States museum can achieve.

History:

The first Silicon Valley startup was founded in 1939 when two Stanford University graduates,
William Hewlett and David Packard, teamed up to create Hewlett-Packard. Since then many other
innovators have followed in their path, and Silicon Valley has become where the world looks for the
latest in technology. The idea to build a museum devoted to science and technology in the Silicon
Valley was formed in 1978 by the Junior League of Palo Alto, which was joined in the effort by the
Junior League of San Jose.

Twelve years later, The Garage opened on San Carlos Street in the former home of downtown San
Jose’s convention center. It quickly became a valuable educational resource for children and young
adults. Eight years later, The Tech moved into a dazzling 132,000-square-foot facility designed by
Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta. The building’s distinctive mango and azure color scheme and
domed theater are San Jose landmarks.

Today, The Tech welcomes half a million visitors each year. Through programs such as The Tech
Challenge, our annual team design competition for youth, and internationally renowned programs
such as The Tech for Global Good, which honors people doing work to benefit humanity, The Tech
celebrates the present and encourages the development of innovative technology for a more
promising future.

1. BioDesign Studio

BioDesign Studio engages the public in interactive exhibits
that spark imagination and confidence with the burgeoning
fields of synthetic biology, bioengineering, biological design
and DIY biology.

Visitors get to become the scientist – this exhibit is an open-
ended experience of creating something with your hands.

2. Body Metrics

Body Metrics leverages the latest developments in an industry
that is constantly changing. Wearable technology —
combined with data collection and analysis that once seemed
unimaginable — allows museum visitors a window into their
physical and emotional selves of today as well as the most
promising health care techniques of tomorrow.

When visitors explore important metrics within their own
bodies, they learn to make small but meaningful changes to
their physical and mental wellbeing. These lessons aim to
spark new momentum to help people feel empowered and
motivated to improve their overall health.

3. Body Worlds Decoded

Body Worlds Decoded puts a Silicon Valley twist on the incredible plastinated human bodies
that have sparked curiosity and awe around the world through Gunther von Hagens’ Institute
for Plastination. With the use of augmented reality and other emerging technologies, visitors
can examine organs and body systems through immersive 3D models.

4. Cyber Detectives

Step into the role of a cyber sleuth in Cyber Detectives, the nation’s first interactive exhibit
designed to help visitors learn about Internet safety. Hone your skills in our training zone. Then
enter our mission zone to test your knowledge as a cyber security professional in a full-fledged
game.

5. Exploration Gallery

Experience various forms of exploration on our
planet and beyond as you shake in an earthquake,
navigate weightlessness like an astronaut and view
Earth as seen from space. (This exhibit includes: a
jetpack chair, shake platform, and view from space)

6. Innovations in Health Care

This is the first exhibit at The Tech that explores advances in health care technology while
explicitly detailing the innovation process

Visitors to Innovations in Health Care will:
 Explore how a dog’s sense of smell might help detect cancer (and test their own sniffing powers.)
 Consider ways to help doctors remotely diagnose medical problems without expensive equipment.
 Brainstorm new ways to filter water in developing nations.
 Experiment with different materials to keep infants warm.
 Learn how to design and build within constraints, an important key to innovation.
 Develop pre-surgery checklists that make procedures safer.
 Detect differences between standard vaccines and new nanopatch technology.
 Contemplate how 3D printing may change health care by creating skin and organs.

7. Reboot Reality

Dive into Reboot Reality and create your own 3D
virtual painting, transport yourself to unfamiliar
worlds, and get lost in a story as it unfolds all
around you. A rotating series of experiences will
showcase our partners’ latest technology and
digital creation tools

8. Social Robots

Come design, build and program a real robot using sensors, controllers and actuators. With so
many variations at your fingertips, the possibilities are limited only by your imagination!

9. The Tech for Global Good

Located at the center of The Tech, the exhibit is a dramatic imagining of how the best uses of
technology can change our world for the better.

10. The Tech Studio

Explore your problem-solving potential in guided STEAM experiences: science, technology,
engineering, arts and math. From designing a wind-powered delivery vehicle to learning about
physics by building a better ice skate, our drop-in all-ages activities will inspire the innovator in
everyone.

Drop-In Activities:

Innovation on Ice: Zamboni
Design Challenge
Solve the Fall
Daily Programming
Open Design Time
Science Journal

Drop-in activities are held in The Tech Studio and Atrium on the Lower Level. Free with
museum admission!

Mission:

The San José Museum of Art reflects the diverse
cultures and innovative spirit of Silicon Valley.
Through its exhibitions, programs, scholarship, and
collections, SJMA connects the present and the past,
the art of the West Coast and the world. The Museum
fosters awareness of artists’ broad contributions to
society and engages audiences with the art of our
time and the vitality of the creative process.

History:

In 1969 – during an era of peace, love, and tie-dye culture – a small group of San Jose citizens
gathered together to transform the beautiful old library (threatened with demolition) into a fledging
art gallery. The democratic, grassroots spirit of this community movement has forever shaped the
character of the San Jose Museum of Art, which remains dedicated to inclusivity, new thinking, and
visionary ideals. In contrast to older museums often founded upon the riches of a few patrons, the
soul of the SJMA reflects the hard work and civic pride of multitudes of supporters and volunteers
over the years – of its public.

From the days of flower power to the dawn of
the digital world, SJMA has continued to
evolve with the times. In 1991, a new wing
was added to the landmark 19th-century
building, making way for a growing
permanent art collection, impressive
international exhibitions, and an ambiguous
mission that bridges tradition and innovation.
SJMA offers experiences that delight and
engage visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
Here, art nurtures life: it is a vision that connects minds and hearts.

Paintings by Raimonds Staprans

Through Sunday, May 20, 2018

Many of Raimonds Staprans’s paintings showcase the
landscape and architecture of California as rooted equally in
reality and in the artist’s imagination. Taut contours and bold
hues define fields, marinas, lone trees, and architecture—all
devoid of people—while scorching sunlight descends from
skies of the deepest blue. His still lifes of fruit, artist’s
materials, and chairs share a quality of light and rich color—sometimes a full prismatic spectrum—
that imbue them with a pervasive loneliness. The assertive brushwork and traces of revision
present in all his work remind the viewer that his chief reality is paint on canvas, his subject’s
formal elements in his process.

Show Your Work: Art and Math

Through Sunday, May 20, 2018

The interactive learning labs in the Koret Family Gallery are a
place to make observations, ask questions, and participate in
creative experimentation. This installation reflects the math-
focused curriculum of SJMA’s award-winning education
program Sowing Creativity and includes artworks by Ron
Davis, David Pace, Clare Rojas, Lordy Rodriguez, and Shirley
Shor.

Scene.”
