After the AGM ...Whisky tasting

David Vitale - CEO and Founder of New World Whisky Distillery in Essendon started in 2004, gave us a
talk about his product - Starward Whisky and then invited us to taste it. David Vitale explained the
manufacturing process, distilling and storage in special barrels. He explained the difference between single
malt and blended whiskies.

This delicious drop costs about $80.00.

Edward Gray Memorial Address

Davenell (Dav) Frederick Whatmore

Introduction by Lilith De Silva

Dav Whatmore was born in Colombo Sri Lanka, in March 1954. He attended Royal Primary School and
then migrated to Australia with his parents. He continued his education in Melbourne and played cricket at
the Prahran Cricket Club where he excelled as a steady number 3 batsman and a fine slip fielder. He went
on to play for Victoria and was in Kim Hughes squad at Test level when the Australian team was being re-
built following the defection by many of the regular players to World Series Cricket. He played in seven
test matches and one ODI.

Having completed his career as a player, he chose coaching and reached the zenith of his coaching life by
taking Sri Lanka to ODI World Cup Champions in 1996. He went on from there to be a specialist batting
coach at the Indian Cricket Academy, then coach of the Bangladesh Test Team, then to the IPL as coach of
Kolkata Knight Riders and finally coached Pakistan until very recently.

Dav is on a sabbatical and we are privileged to have him with us as our chief guest to deliver the Edward
Gray Memorial address.

Davenell (Dav) Frederick Whatmore's address

Dav in his speech recalled his childhood, when at the age of eight he came to Australia with his family. He
was a nervous kid with a stutter, who later studied at Cheltenham High school.

Dav went on to talk about his coaching of the Sri Lankan team, who won the World Cup in 1996, after first
defeating India in the semi final and Australia in the final. Sanath Jayasuria was described as a shrewd
captain.

Dav qualified as a coach after a four year stint with the Victorian Institute of sport. He coached the
Pakistan team for two years, admitting that not many last more than two years of coaching Pakistan. Dav
stressed that a captain needs to have good relations with his coach and chief selector.

When questioned about the great Sri Lankan players like Sangakara and Jayawardene and who could take
their place, Dav mentioned names such as Lahiru Thirimanne
and Dinesh Chandimal adding that Jayawardene was also a
great fielder with excellent catching skills. Dav mentioned
that the young players now have a greater say in team
matters. Satchithra Senanayake was tested with his bowling
action and his elbow exceeded the 15 degrees of tolerance
permitted.

Dav mentioned the support that Murali received from the
team when his bowling action was challenged. He
commented on the irony of Murali teaching Australian
cricketers how to bowl the "doostra". Dav explained "reverse
swing" by saying that it is achieved by having one side of the
ball polished and the other side rough.

Dav Whatmore has been credited with having taken the most Professor Priyan Mendis
number of catches at first slip in State cricket. Dav claimed
that he was given the nickname "Gunga Din" and thinks that
Max Walker was responsible for it.

Toast to the teachers of Royal College

Professor Priyan Mendis proposed the toast to the teachers of Royal College.

Blue and Gold Soiree 2014

The much anticipated Annual Dinner Dance of RCOBAA was held at The Grand on Cathies on the 29th
July 2014. A large number of ladies, gaily dressed in eye catching saris and elegant evening dresses,
accompanied by smartly dressed young and not-so-young gentlemen, many proudly wearing the Blue and
Gold College tie, arrived well in advance at the venue in anticipation of a memorable evening. From the
moment they stepped into the elegantly decorated dance hall, to be served with canapés and champagne, up
to when the band played the last baila, well past midnight, a good time was had by all.

Proceedings commenced with the band ”Rap–So–D” striking up some nice and easy music to get the guests
toe tapping. A tantalizing bevy of samba dancers then set the floor alive bringing Rio's Carnival to the
Soirée. The consummate Master of Ceremonies, Nihal De Run, then invited the President of RCOBAA,
Athula Ratnayake, to welcome the guests. On completion of his speech, the College Song was sung with
much gusto by the over 100 Old boys present. A touching and nostalgic moment indeed! After a sumptuous
dinner, much dancing and catching up with friends continued, making it an occasion for fellowship and
joviality.

The Guest of Honour was a former teacher, prefect of games and old boy, Mr. Harischandra Nanayakkara,
who presented trophies to our winning Cricket and Touch Rugby teams.

RCOBAA MELBOURNE VS RCOBAA SYDNEY By Ransi Fernando
5th October 2014 @ Rowville Cricket Club

The game was played on 5th October at Rowville Cricket Club. The Melbourne side was led by Sajith
Mendis and the NSW by S Kandakumar.

The Melbourne side batted first with Bala John and Y Rajkumar opening the innings. The side scored an
impressive 193 for the loss of 5 wickets in 30 overs with five of the top order batsman retiring after scoring
the maximum allowed.

The noteworthy contributors to the score were: In reply NSW side scored 147 for the loss of 4
wickets in their allotted 30 overs. The contributors
Bala John- 31 (retired) to their score were:
Rajkumar- 28 (retired)
Dinesh Chelvathurai- 25 (retired) Radhesha Rasaratnam - 25 (retired)
Maliq Dean- 26 (retired) Balgunan- 25 (retired)

Lalin De Silva- 11 S Kandakumar- 10 not out
Ransi Fernando- 10
Radhesha Rasaratnam (RCOBAA)and Channa
Athukorala bowled reasonably well for the Sydney
team.

Alfie Lawton bowled exceptionally well for the Melbournians, with three overs, taking one wicket and
giving away only three runs. Generally, all the bowlers did well to keep the NSW batsman in check. Mike
Labrooy was going great guns when he pulled a hammy during batting and had to retire. However, he came
back to bowl during NSW innings and bowled quite well to keep the opposition batsmen quiet.

Obituary

Dr. Clarence Muttiah 13.06.1928 - 12.08.2014

A Tribute to a gentleman

Dr. Clarence Muttiah’s thanks giving service
15th August 2014. Holy Trinity Church, Kew

Eulogy – Hiran Muttiah.

Dada in his customary self-deprecating manner requested that there was to be
no eulogy today. However, the family was of the view that it was appropriate
to share an insight of his life with you.

As the middle child of the five boys, I have the honour of this task. Of course,
Rashmi our youngest and only sister is dada’s “Rasathi” and is duly accorded
a higher standing his eyes.

The death of a loved one, no matter their age is a time of sorrow and sadness.
So it has been since the passing of Dr. Clarence Muttiah, aged 84. Through
the emotional roller coaster of the last few days, there remains a deep sense of
happiness and thankfulness for a life full of enrichment. Happy, that we had
the pleasure and privilege to enjoy his relatively long life. Thankful, that he was spared any prolonged pain
and suffering.

Indeed we are here today to share in the spiritual celebration of a life lived to the fullest. Dad’s life journey
was one of many dimensions encapsulated by his commitment to his Christian faith. Since the news of
dad’s passing, the family has received many messages from around the globe recalling how dad had made a
positive difference to lives in one way or another. As I look around this large gathering here today, there is
no doubt that dad’s deeds in life, speak much louder than any amount of my words at a time such as this.

We are comforted by your expression of sympathy and your support through your presence here today. For
us his sons, the saying “there is no greater misfortune to befall an ordinary man, than to have an extra-
ordinary father” resonates louder today than ever before.

Dad was blessed with an abundance of patience, tolerance and acquired wisdom. He was a tremendous
source of quiet strength and inspiration to all who came to know him. He was selfless in his concern for the
welfare of others although mild mannered, he was steadfast in his passion for social fair-play.

Dad was a humble man. To him, life’s riches were not gauged by material gain but through the quality of
one’s interaction with fellow human beings - be it friend or stranger alike. He shared the fruits of his labour
generously and was a fatherly figure to many. He was a devoted father and a dutiful husband almost to a
fault.

Dad had a healthy sense of humour and a natural knack for recalling memorable events from by-gone
years. He loved a get-together and a sing-song. He loved nothing more than having the wider family and
friends around. Dad had a serious side too and his approach to life is truly epitomised in a verse he learnt
during his early school days at Royal College, which in turn he passed on to us.

The verse reads;
Life hath many an up and many a down

Many a smile and many a frown
Many a kiss and many a curse
Many a wrong that could be worse.
So brother, if you are up – do not scorn the man who is down and weary and worn.
Remember this and remember well, add never a coal to another man’s hell.

RCOBAA is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Clarence Muttiah. Clarence was the Vice Patron of
RCOBAA and served as President for two terms in 1990/91 and 1991/92. He was a long standing member
of the Association and started the RCOBAA choir which participated in a Christmas Service each year. He
will be greatly missed.

A MIGHTY OAK HAS FALLEN

Some chroniclers would depict the recent passing of my noble friend and neighbour, Harendra Sherman
de Silva (aka HS), aged 74 years, with the timeworn expression “a mighty oak has fallen”. For someone
who was sturdy, tall, and walked with measured tread and head held high, this euphemism perfectly
describes the death of HS, both metaphorically and literally.

The eldest son of successful entrepreneur, Mr. Sherman de Silva, who founded M/s. Sherman Sons Ltd.,
HS entered Royal College, conveniently located a mere stone’s throw from his home, in 1952. He enjoyed
an outstanding sporting career at Royal College, captaining both the athletics and the first XV rugby
football teams. He was the first to participate in ten successive Bradby Shield games, a record I believe he
held for over 50 years.

On leaving school, he went on to represent the first XV of the elite Colombo Rugby and Football Club, in
the premier tournament of the sport in the country, the Clifford Cup, alongside his schoolmate, now a
successful business tycoon, Ken Balendra.

Despite their success both on and off the field, Bala and HS remained most humble human beings, always
supporting the best interests of their alma mater. In effect, they were exemplary and well-rounded
Royalists.

A little known fact concerning his sporting career at school was that he played for the College junior
cricket team as a wicket-keeper until a freak on-field accident most likely put a damper on his future
aspirations in the game. It happened this way. The opposition batsman was bowled, and after clipping the
bails, the ball hit the wicket-keeping HS flush on his mouth! There was pandemonium as the injury
resulted in profuse bleeding and the match was held up for a short while first-aid was administered.
Unfortunately, I was the offending bowler. Elected House captain, his top-drawer conduct coupled with his
sporting record enabled him to be appointed a College Prefect.

After leaving school it was natural that HS, being the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman de Silva, stepped
into his father’s shoes at Sherman & Sons and held the reins successfully for a number of years. He was
honoured by the prestigious Ceylon Chamber of Commerce by his appointment as its Chairman. His
experience in commerce was recognized by the business community with numerous invitations to join the
Boards of Directors of many organizations, varying from manufacturing companies to a banking
institution.

However, despite his responsibilities in the commercial world, HS’s prime interest in life was his
commitment to the study and practice of the teachings of the Buddha. He practised meditation on a daily

basis, and was a tower of strength for the welfare and sustenance of the Sangha around the country and
sometimes even outside Sri Lanka. Many are the times, my requests for similar religious donations, were
met with alacrity; soon after the request was made, HS would be at my doorstep with a cheque in hand!

It seems paradoxical that a person in the world of commerce, especially as it is today where profit at all
costs is the final motive, could be dedicated in the practice of the Dhamma. Was he able to juggle between
these two often conflicting concepts without falling between the two proverbial stools? He certainly was,
because HS was aware of what the Buddha preached for those involved in proper livelihood as stated in the
Anguttara Nikaya Book of Eights:

“Whatever be the means by which a clansmen earns his living - whether farming, trade, raising cattle,
archery, government services or some other craft – he should be skillful and diligent, possess sound
judgment in order to carry out and arrange it properly”.

‘HS’ was blessed by having his wife Neleeka by his side for almost half a century (they were to celebrate
their golden anniversary on 15 April 2015) who was a mother hen to him. She always worried about his
health and well-being and kept a close watch on his medications etc., right up to the end. Her final words,
after kissing him on his forehead in his deathbed, were: “Hare, you have always been a good man.” HS was
a very lucky man indeed,

In addition to Neleeka, he leaves behind sons, Lavindra and Janath, and his siblings the late Jayanthi, Lalith
(Australia), Kamal, Kumudini (USA), Sanath, Gihan, Niroshan and Nilanthi, daughters-in-law Ritu and
Elizabeth and grand-daughters Isabella and Aryana.

May he attain the Supreme Bliss of Nibbana.

Batticaloa Teaching Hospital Emergency and Accident
Project (Project BEAP)

At the Annual Dinner Dance of the RCOBAA in 2012, the Chief Guest was Admiral Thisara
Samarasinghe, the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Australia.

Admiral Samarasinghe, himself an old Royalist, in his speech as Chief Guest, congratulated the RCOBAA
for its good work in raising funds for worthwhile projects at the College and at the same time he urged
Royalists to think beyond the College and try to support reconciliation and rehabilitation activity following
the cessation of the civil war.

Our committee took this message seriously and chose a project that one of its committee men, Nihal de
Run heads as the Chief Executive Officer (Project BEAP).

The Batticaloa region was engulfed in the 32 year conflict then ravaged by the Tsunami waves of 2004 and
badly needed a modern emergency and accident hospital to treat patients with serious injuries. Dr David
Young, a prominent Melbourne based Orthopaedic Surgeon has pushed for the construction of E&A
hospitals throughout the regional parts of Sri Lanka. The article on the next page appeared in the National
Media in Sri Lanka in August 2014. It carried an interesting account on this subject.

The RCOBAA has made a donation towards the building project as part of its outreach program.
