56th Annual National Conference
Society of American Registered Architects
National Conference-Saint Louis, Missouri
The 56th SARA National Conference kicked off with an all day Board Meeting conducting the
business end of the Society. Later in the evening a Welcome Reception at the Anheuser Busch
Brewery sponsored by Activu afforded everyone the opportunity to “meet and greet” and take
pictures with a 7 ft. tall Clydesdale.
Seminars filled the day Friday with a variety of educational CEU’s including “Curtain Wall vs
Storefront” by EFCO, A Pella Company; “Performance Based Solutions vs Prescriptive Codes” by
AON; a field trip to Granite City, Illinois sponsored by Precoat Metals included a seminar on the
“Sustainability of Metal Roof Panels” along with a tour of the plant and lunch. The afternoon’s
menu of CEU’s contained “Design of Drained and Back-Ventilated Rain Screen Cladding” given
by Trespa North America; “Stone Wool Insulation: Improving Building Performance” by Roxul,
Inc.; and “Healthy Indoor Air Quality by Design” given by Spec-Rite Designs.
Friday evening was highlighted by the much anticipated Celebration of Architecture and De-
sign award banquet hosted by Octavio Santurio, Chair of the 2012 program along with jury
members, Eric Kleinsteuber, Kevin Kuehn, and Kevin Regalado. Everyone was treated to a
wonderful evening of award winning project presentations and meeting the recipients of the
2012 Design Awards. The Synergy Award was presented to CityArchRiver 2015 Foundation.
Mrs. Maggie Hales, Executive Director graciously accepted the Synergy Award. SARA also rec-
ognized the St. Louis offices of Cannon Design, The Power House Building. Mr. Tom Bergmann
from Cannon Design accepted the award. We’d also like to thank Cannon Design for the won-
derful tour of the building on Wednesday evening prior to the Conference.

nual Assembly continued with reporting to the
membership the business activities of the Society
including committee and council reports. The
tabulation of the national election of officers was
announced by Nominating Chair, John Maple indicating the
following results for 2013: President, Suzette Stoler, Presi-
dent-Elect, Ron Knabb, Vice President, Guy Ragusa, Secre-

The Sean F. Mellon
Memorial Architectural Scholarship
The New York Council Society of American Registered Architects was pleased to host this year’s second annual confirma-
tion of the Sean F. Mellon Memorial Architectural Scholarship. This year’s recipient was Ms. Jamie Edindjiklian, a fifth
year student at the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York. Jamie will graduate
in May of this year, maintaining a 3.7 GPA, as well as membership upon the college Dean’s list.
Jamie’s presentation was selected from over 40 entries from schools around the country that included Columbia Univer-
sity, Harvard Graduate School of Design, the University of Florida, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Carnegie Mellon
University, to name a few. The afternoon’s program was held at the UN One Hotel, 35 stories above the cityscape with
a presentation of the $2,000.00 scholarship award funded by the SARA Education Fund. The presentation was made
by outgoing President Professor Paul King, ARA and the incoming President Keith M. Lucas, ARA. The afternoon also
provided for a second presentation from the Mellon Family to Jaime of a beautiful framed artistic photograph taken by
Sean, together with a touching speech by Ray Mellon, Sean’s father.
During dessert the attendants were treated to a visual presentation of
Jamie’s work, as well as a wonderful speech by Jaime touching upon
her hopes and aspirations in a pursuit of her architectural career. The
event was attended by over 60 guests with all seeking the promise
to be reinvited next year. The third annual presentation will be con-
ferred at this year’s conference to be held in New York, and be made
part of the conference programming. There is every expectation that
this program will continue to grow in both participation and stature
and all at the New York Council were pleased to see the fruits of their
effort succeed in the hands of this year’s deserved recipient.

Gregson Leadership Awards
Designated the Society’s second highest award, the Gregson Founder Award is presented to members for particularly outstanding service
and dedication to the Society and the profession. The symbol of this award, a tie made in the tartan plaid of Founder Wilfred J. Gregson’s
Scottish ancestors, is given to the recipients. No specific number of these awards is made, and it varies from year-to-year as judged, to
service rendered, by the Founder. The award was established in 1960, and was first presented at the SARA Convention in Dallas, Texas.
By action of the National Board in 2004, the Society has renamed this award the Gregson Leadership Award.
