Dear Friends,

This season of Arts & Minds programming is unlike any other, offering what we can online
and postponing concerts until it is once again safe to gather in large numbers. That said,
I believe that our virtual offerings are of the same high quality and relevance as those
presented face-to-face in previous seasons.

Events bridge academic disciplines and community interests. From a conversation with
best-selling author Marilynne Robinson to original work from our theatre arts department,
and topics ranging from racism to the environment to diversity in entrepreneurship, you are
invited to engage with some of today’s brightest minds on some of today’s toughest topics.

Please join us for these special programs. I look forward to seeing you online! In the
meantime, stay healthy.

This season is made possible by generous support from the Helen Brach Foundation. Our season is dedicated to
Dr. Peggy Sullivan (1929-2020). A longtime friend and patron of the Siena Center, Peggy was a regular attendee and
participant at Siena events. She was one of the first individual major supporters whose gifts enabled the Center to
attract renowned speakers. Her vision thoroughly animates our work and her presence will be missed as we begin
our seventeenth year of programming.

Over the centuries we have come to learn a lot about what it means to
be human from various sources including the natural and social sciences.
However, our Christian theological tradition has not always kept pace. The
recent coronavirus pandemic has further challenged our assumptions of
collective human invulnerability, as well as social and environmental progress,
raising new questions regarding how we ought to think about what it means
to be human. Dr. Horan is the Duns Scotus Chair of Spirituality at Catholic
Theological Union in Chicago.
