Glena G. Temple Presidenta Dear Graduates, Today, as you begin the next step in your professional and personal lives, I applaud your accomplishments, and on behalf of the Dominican University community, I wish you all success and happiness in the future. Commencement is indeed a moment to celebrate accomplishments. It is also an occasion to be a bit reflective about mission. Today Dominican provides you with a degree. Hopefully, you take away much more—a sense of selfworth, a curiosity about learning and a commitment not only to succeed, but also to serve. In veritas and in caritas, may all your dreams come true. Sincerely, Glena G. Temple President La ceremonia será traducida en vivo. Por favor, busque audífonos en la entrada. Atentamente,

UNDERGRADUATE HONORED GUESTS Dr. Ngozi O. Ezikee is president and CEO of Sinai Chicago, the state’s largest private safety net health system. She oversees a network of four hospitals, 17 community clinics, one community institute and a nationally recognized research institute serving Chicago’s West and Southwest Sides. From the start of her medical career, she has prioritized work toward equity in health care and protecting vulnerable populations. Before joining Sinai in 2022, Dr. Ezike served as director of the Illinois Department of Public Health from 2019 to 2022. She gained local and national prominence for her leadership in guiding the state through the COVID-19 pandemic, providing Illinois residents with daily information, data and preventative measures to lessen the spread of the virus. She is the first Black woman, and only the second female, to lead the department in its nearly 150-year history. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker called her a “beacon of stability for millions during a time of tremendous uncertainty.” A board-certified internist and pediatrician, Dr. Ezike spent more than 15 years with Cook County Health, providing care to marginalized and vulnerable communities. Her work included in-patient care as an attending physician at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and serving as medical director of Austin Health Center on Chicago’s West Side and medical director of Cermak Health Services at the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center of Cook County. She also provided primary and preventative care in community and school-based clinics. A graduate of Harvard University and the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Ezike has also taught at Rush University Medical College. As a nationally recognized public health and health leader, she is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. These include the GirlForward 2023 Accomplice Award, the Lester H. McKeever Individual Service Award from the Chicago Urban League, the Motorola Civic Service Award, the Jane Addams Medal of Freedom and USA Today's Inaugural Women of the Year Award for the State of Illinois. Dr. Ezike was recognized among the 2024 Women of Note by Crain’s Chicago Business and among Crain’s Notable Leaders in Healthcare in 2023. HONORARY DEGREE AND COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Ngozi O. COMMENCEMENT 2024 UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY ACCOLADES Dr. Jennifer C. Dunn began her career in education teaching high school courses in speech, drama and social studies internationally. After receiving her master’s degree from Kansas State University in 2003, she set her sights on teaching at the college level and completed her PhD in Rhetoric and Public Culture from Ohio University in 2009. Since joining Dominican University that same year, she has published nine peer-reviewed journal articles and nine peer-reviewed book chapters, edited three peer-reviewed books and co-authored a textbook. Her research centers upon the intersections of cultural studies, feminist media studies, popular culture and rhetoric. This focus aligns with her classroom teaching. Her most recent book, Friends: A Cultural History, gained international attention after the death of actor Matthew Perry last year. Dr. Dunn has served as the chair of the Communication Arts and Sciences Department, mentored dozens of student research and conference presentations, and led grant-funded faculty workshops on culturally responsive teaching. For the last two years, she has served as president of Dominican’s Faculty Senate. Through her campus leadership, work ethic and natural empathy, Brianna Yanga lives out the Dominican mission. Noted for her “great leadership qualities and brilliant accomplishments,” Brianna has served as president of the Black Student Union, Peer LEADer and Transition Peer Mentor, student coordinator of The Village leadership development program, resident assistant and member of TRIO Student Support Services. With a double-major in fashion design and fashion merchandising, Brianna most recently served as co-director of Dominican’s spring fashion show, overseeing the annual production, which showcases original student designs. Academically, Brianna has demonstrated excellence with a cumulative grade point average above 3.5, and she has been named to the Dean’s List and Honor Roll. In addition to her double-major, her minors are in marketing and social media. She has been recognized for spiritually empowering her peers through her involvement in Beloved Community, a faith formation and leadership development fellowship focused on African American spirituality and offered through University Ministry. DOROTHY REINER MULROY AWARD ROSARY COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP AND TEACHING AWARD Each year since 1983, the university has bestowed the Dorothy Reiner Mulroy Award upon a graduating senior. The award was established by the late Thomas R. Mulroy to honor his wife, Dorothy, a member of the Class of 1931, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. The Mulroy Award honors a student who has shown outstanding academic ability and leadership throughout their years at Dominican. For more than three decades, the faculty of the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences has selected a colleague to receive this award. Recipients demonstrate a strong record of service to the college and university through significant work on standing committees and other important administrative duties. In addition, recipients have an excellent continuing record of scholarship, along with compelling evidence of teaching effectiveness, including curricular innovations and classroom practices that promote student learning. COMMENCEMENT 2024 GRADUATE UNIVERSITY ACCOLADES Dr. Michel Harris is the director of the Borra College of Health Sciences’ Didactic Program in Dietetics. A registered dietitian since 2000, Dr. Harris joined Dominican University in 2015 as an adjunct professor and has been an assistant professor of nutrition since 2023. With the encouragement of family and friends, she started her doctorate studies in clinical nutrition at the University of North Florida where she focused on the development of intercultural competence skills in nutrition students and interns. During this time, she created a service-learning trip to New Orleans for Dominican University’s nutrition students. Findings from an August 2023 trip, which looked at health disparities and inequities and how to address them, were shared with the university community during last year’s Caritas Veritas Symposium. Dr. Harris continues to grow service-learning experiences for her students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. After working in the hospitality industry for the better part of a decade, Chukwudi (Chudi) Aguanunu was motivated to return to the classroom when the pandemic’s upheaval made him recognize that his career path lacked potential for advancement and sustainability. Always intending to pursue his Master of Business Administration and having developed an interest in nutrition, Chudi found Dominican University’s MBA/ Registered Dietitian program to be the perfect fit for changing the trajectory of his career. During his time in the program, he participated in two nutrition-based service-learning trips to New Orleans: first as an undergraduate student and then as a graduate student mentor. Chudi was named to the Dean’s List for four semesters, and in 2023 he became a registered dietitian and nutritionist. For his graduate level business studies, he traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina for an international practicum that exposed him to challenges in a foreign business environment. He noted that he is excited to use the skills he gained from his RDN and MBA education in his future career. 2024 18 COMMENCEMENT ACADEMIC REGALIA / MACE The custom of wearing academic regalia goes back to the universities of the Middle Ages and adapts the style of clergy, who were the literate class. A long, hooded gown indicated the role of the scholar. Most of the early academic garments were black, but at Oxford and Cambridge, touches of color were added during the Renaissance. The regalia worn at the universities across Europe became increasingly colorful. Academic caps of various shapes eventually replaced the hood as a head covering. Around 1885, American students and faculty expressed interest in wearing caps and gowns at commencement ceremonies to add dignity. An Intercollegiate Commission presented American institutions of higher learning with the Intercollegiate Code in 1895, regulating the design of gowns and hoods, as well as the colors and materials to be used. It is now possible to recognize the degree-granting institution, as well as the degree and the field of study of the person wearing academic regalia. The Bachelor of Arts ordinarily wears a black gown with long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves. Bell-shaped sleeves crossed with three wide bands of velvet indicate the doctor’s gown. Presidential gowns became traditional during the 20th century. They are usually designed in the institution’s colors and feature four bands of velvet on each sleeve. The square “Oxford Cap” (or mortarboard), with its flat crown, is worn for most degrees, although the smaller, soft cap is becoming more common. Hoods for Dominican University graduate degrees have the following colors: Business: Drab Mediation and Conflict Resolution: White Education: Light Blue Library and Information Science: Yellow Nutrition: Gold Physician Assistant: Green Social Work: Citron Trauma-Informed Leadership: White About the University Mace The University Mace Bearer leads the convocation procession carrying the Dominican University mace. Originally a heavy club used on the medieval battlefield, the mace has become a symbol of authority. Our university mace symbolizes our commitment to our Catholic and Dominican mission, featuring the enduring Dominican Caritas et Veritas shield. Our mace was designed by Magdelena Malachowska ’99 and created by Berthold Schweiger, a local woodworker. Today's University Mace Bearers are: Undergraduate ceremony Jennifer C. Dunn, PhD, Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences and President of the Faculty Senate Graduate ceremony James Scherrer, PhD, Professor of Social Work and Vice President of the Faculty Senate
