Moving in the Spirit
ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021
When is the best time to do things?
Who is the most important one?
What is the right thing to do?
When the world is changing from moment to moment, Bless you for never giving up on us, for stretching beyond

Everything behind you propels you forward.
Over this past year, everything behind us—the tenacity,
loyalty, and stamina of our community—came together
to keep us grounded and keep us moving.
We are humbled by the magnificent moments and
miracles experienced by our children, talented young
artists who pour out their deepest fears to their trusted
teachers. We witness the act of students creating
choreography as a powerful tool for them to pull
themselves out of uncertainty onto safe, solid ground.
We hold on to one another because we believe that
the world is filled with promise, and we promise to
LOVE ONE ANOTHER. We dance and invite others
to IGNITE their lights and shine because we believe
that together we are strong. Together we can make a
difference in the world.
And moving through it all, we find our answers:
Remember then that there is only one important time, and
that time is now. The most important one is always the
one you are with. And the most important thing is to do
good for the one who is standing at your side. For these,
my dear, are the answers to what is most important in this
world.

Mission
Moving in the Spirit is an award-winning creative youth
development program. We use the discipline of dance
to help children and teens develop the social, emotional,
and cognitive skills they need to thrive.
BEHIND Numbers
THE
Moving in the Spirit directly served one hundred and
eleven children and teens during the 2020-2021 program
year and reached an additional 1,000 patrons through
virtual performances and educational workshops.
We strategically reduced our student capacity this past
program year to:
• support safety and greater social distancing when we
activated our hybrid class model
• provide additional classroom and mental health
support to students struggling during the pandemic
• cultivate deeper connections between students,
their peers, and their teachers by meeting more
often during the months we operated through
virtual learning
As always, 100% of our services were offered below
market rates or free of charge.
We look forward to safely and effectively scaling our
capacity once again to serve more students in the
coming program year.
FALL 2020Program Highlights
WINTER 2020 With support from Georgia Council for the Arts, Samsung, and The
Chestnut Family Foundation, Moving in the Spirit upgraded our classroom
SPRING 2021 technology and began streaming live, virtual classes to students from our
new studios in Edgewood/Candler Park.
Dr. Charné Furcron, Director of Education, received the Exceptional
Service Award from the American Dance Therapy Association. Additionally,
she was awarded the Executive Director’s Award for her work on the
National Dance Education Organization’s IDEA committee promoting
inclusion, diversity, and equity.
Moving in the Spirit reimagined our beloved annual event, the Holiday
Store, as a contactless curbside event. Students received gift cards and
treats to reward merit points they had earned throughout the dance
semester. They used their gift cards to shop online for holiday surprises
for their families and loved ones, continuing the Holiday Store tradition of
selflessness and generosity!
Moving in the Spirit began a six-month partnership with Emory
University’s Community Building & Social Change program, The Wylde
Center’s Edgewood Community Learning Garden, and Whitefoord Inc. to
conduct community engagement research in the Edgewood neighborhood,
where we now reside.
Members of our team with expertise in counseling, creative youth
development, and equity practices were tapped by The Wallace
Foundation’s Youth Arts Initiative, The National Dance Education
Organization, The Galloway School, and other organizations to provide
professional development to educators and arts professionals. Topics
included Healing Trauma Through Creativity; The Creative Exploration
of Self; Staff Practices for Building Trust, Safety, and Engagement; and
Intersectionality and the Complexity of Identity and Oppression.
Students danced in Moving in the Spirit’s new studios for the very first
time in preparation for our first-ever virtual fundraiser, SoulRise: Radiate.
Unite. Inspire. Board members Shani Godwin and Randi Williams conceived
and led the event, which was co-hosted by WSB-TV’s Condace Pressley,
Alston & Bird partner Derin Dickerson, and Moving in the Spirit student
Dai Delatte. A smashing success, the event raised over $117,000!
Moving in the Spirit activated our hybrid teaching model, welcoming our
student body to take their first in-person classes in our new studios!
On June 3, Moving in the Spirit presented our first full-length,
livestreamed performance, Ignite Your Light...Shine. Filmed by
choreographer and filmmaker Zachary Todd, the occasion marked the
first time students performed in our new theater. More than 350 patrons
viewed the performance.
